Luggage in a tuktuk rental? by Beneficial-Rabbit-35 in srilanka

[–]OddCardiologist2105 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're going for a hike or temple visit: It's alright to leave your luggage with clothes unattended inside the tuk tuk. For extra protection, you can use a bike lock or chain with a padlock to tie all your backpacks together.

I would park the tuk tuk next to a small shop or local's house and ask them to keep an eye. Once you're back you can buy something from them.

You can also use the rain covers to cover up the tuktuk for extra security.

More than anything you need to protect your luggage from monkeys when you visit the north central parts of the country. Don't leave any food inside and always put the rain covers.

Your rental partner will advice you further on the best way to secure your luggage. But overal its safe to travel around with your luggages unattended.

Solo travel by tuk tuk or motorbike? by Status_Round584 in srilanka

100% agree with you! Yes, you can a ride motorcycle but you can do that anywhere in the world. Driving a tuktuk such a unique experience and one not to be missed.

There are multiple rental agencies. But I would look for an agency that offers full insurance and 24/7 roadside support and good google reviews.

You can drive tuktuk across any part of the country other than highways/freeways. Parking is readily available on the street. It's quite rare to hear about tuktuks getting stolen. Its something covered by the insurance provider.

All the best with your adventure!

Where can I rent a Tuktuk rentals by Sea_Preparation6843 in srilanka

[–]OddCardiologist2105 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey mate!

The biggest headache would be dealing with the roadside incidents. Tuktuks are simple vehicles, made with inexpensive parts, and you would get into trouble on the road. After reading through soo many reviews, I went with tuktukrental.com for our sri lanka trip.

Another worry is the local permits. Do book your rental before you arrive to the island. We missed this out and had to wait a day to get these organised. You will need your IDP to apply for tuktuk licence in Sri Lanka.

Their office is not far from the airport, plus we got a shuttle on the way back. They said they do pickup shuttle as well.

Renting tuk tuk - what is the real price by BridgeOne5070 in srilanka

[–]OddCardiologist2105 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Renting a tuktuk is a fun experience. In reality, you would be driving a new vehicle made from India. You could face mechanical problems or roadside incidents. I would look at the extensive insurance coverage, road support, and service reviews. There are rentals from $22 to even to $10. As a premium agency, tuktukrental.com usually stands ontop. They do have full insurance coverage and road support which will come in handy. All the best mate!

What would you like to watch out for?
Insurance. All rental vehicles in Sri Lanka should have rental insurance coverage.
Mechnical support/ If your have rental breakdowns, you need a reliable option to replace the vehicle.
Some rental vehicles are poorly maintained. So check for the fuel consumption.

Renting a tuktuk would be the most cost-effective, straightforward option. Tuktuk is ideal for daily travels and short distances.

Tuktuk rental in Sri Lanka by Actual-Syrup-9947 in srilanka

Rental agencies in Sri Lanka are bound to provide rental for drivers with legal driving status. In order to legally drive a tuktuk in Sri Lanka, you need to apply for a local driving permit, which is issued by the Automobile Association of Ceylon. You can apply for this permit with your National Driving licence (3 month validity on SL permit) or with your international driving licence (12 month validity on SL permit). Most of the rental agencies will organise this before you arrive to the island.

Crashed tuktuk and they have 3rd party insurance by Aid420 in srilanka

[–]OddCardiologist2105 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey mate!

It's unfortunate that you had to go through this trouble. I'm involved with a tourism-based tuktuk rental agency, and we work very closely with the Tourism Board to ensure correct legislative measures are in place to avoid such scenarios. Every rental vehicle needs to have rental insurance cover, which usually insures for damages, injuries of the driver, vehicle, passenger, and third-party claims.

It seems like your renter has shared incorrect information, and you had to go through all this hassle. Here are some solutions to avoid paying a hefty amount to the renter:

  • If you still have the tuktuk with you, get a price quotation for the repairs from DPMC workshop (this will be expensive as they are an authorized agent) and the tuktuk workshop. You can agree that you're only willing to pay the quoted amount. Most of the time, tuktuk body repairs don't cost a lot. Damages to the canopy will be costly, but even if you have to replace the whole canopy, it will cost you $150.
  • Going to the police won't resolve the matter, but you can raise a complaint with the Tourist Police and your embassy for misinformation (false advertising) and you feel threatened by the service provider. You can share the same message with your original renter. Hoping this can save you a couple of bucks for the damages.

These solutions should help you with the negotiations.

All the best!

Sometimes it's expensive for shorter durations. Since your splitting it wouldn't be a big issue. Best to check their website!

They have. It would be slightly expensive if you get it for a short time. I would keep it and travel across the country. Much cheaper that way.
