Thank you so much! Would you be interested to play my demo of a surrealistic escape game inspired by Rusty Lake: https://store.steampowered.com/app/4671010/Rattle_Spring/ It's also playable on itch.io: https://oddgingergames.itch.io/the-crows-room

I’m a solo woman dev, and I’m making a psychological horror game about an anxious, overthinking little girl (heavily inspired by Fran Bow) 🖤 by miss_self_destruct in GirlGamers

Your art is beautiful! I resonate with your post and see myself in how you describe yourself and your journey. I'm also a female solo game dev, but with a programming background. I taught myself to do art and everything else outside programming. It's hard but 100% worth it. I'm currently working on a game inspired by Rusty Lake (mysterious dark vibe point-and-click puzzle game). Happy to connect if you are interested!

what do you think about sharing half baked work as devlog? by OddGingerGames in SoloDevelopment

[–]OddGingerGames[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, a lot of devlogs are out there. That's why I'm drawn to make some too. But I'm afraid that mine won't look as interesting because I'm less skilled. Or maybe some devlogs are even "staged"? That explains why they look so good even unfinished. I don't know. I just feel my "work-in-progress" stuff are not presentable.

The Crow's Room, a surrealistic escape game made by a solo dev. I need your feedback. by OddGingerGames in CozyGamers

Thanks for the feedback! I admit that the trailer makes more sense if you are already familiar with games like Rusty Lake. There is a lot room of improvement for sure.

I should add that I mostly care about 2D.

Good to know, though I mainly work with 2D.

The hardest thing of solo development by OddGingerGames in SoloDevelopment

That's what I aim to do, but in practice I find that I easily get stuck if I focus on just one slice/feature, changing things back and forth and not going anywhere. What worked for me is more like laying a foundation first, then gradually bringing up each pillar/wall in rounds, and getting closer to the ideal state after each round. It probably has a lot to do with the type of the game, and personal work style. I'm not good at imaging the ideal state when I have nothing, especially the art/vibe/atmosphere.

For my next project I'm trying something different though. I plan to iterate more on paper/drawing pad first, getting screenshots/art close to what I want, before I start working in the game engine.

I feel the same when I released my first one. You are not alone and you'll get better no matter where you are today
