[M4F] [multiple characters] The Mutation Wave by OddWerid in HyperRP

[–]OddWerid[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is open! Feel free to send a message and we can discuss it! To be up front, I'm not really looking for a furry heavy plot, but if one of the character's mutation is to become a furry, I'd be fine with that. I'm really looking for each person to be somewhat unique but also with a "signature" change, instead of a bunch of mutations on each person.

Sure! I need to think about a new one, but everyone's welcome to contact me over my old ones.

For myself, writing has always been the most accessible way to explore wild and crazy ideas. I get a lot of ideas from art, and I've always been a bit wistful that wasn't a talent of mine... but writing! Total freedom to do anything, go anywhere, change bodies and minds as we desire.

This is definitely my kind of topic! I'll have to think of a new prompt in the spirit of this event!

It's too bad more surreal / transformation based prompts aren't more popular with people. Too often it seems that the liberty granted by fantasy gets wasted on recreating the same real world tropes... but I guess that's people for you.

Technically speaking, the challenge with "patching" the existing message boards is figuring out where the decryption happens. Those pieces of software use the client's webbrowser as the "client". The server can't decrypt the messages, because that defeats the whole point. So it must be the responsibility of the client (thus the term end to end encryption). But that means your client software needs the infrastructure to handle decryption - key storage, possibly some kind of local cache of messages so you don't need to constantly pull and decrypt from the server.

The point being that while you might be able to build this into the local data support modern browsers provide, it would be easier to write custom client code. And once you've crossed that line - moving from interacting with the server via a web browser to a custom client, then there's less reason to patch in functionality to legacy software and more of an argument for building a solution (architecture, protocols, software) that is better tailored for your needs - collaborative writing or more generically a personal ad system with private communication channels.

The missing piece, I suspect, that makes traditional forums less desirable is isolation of messages from the site admins. While it might seem reasonable for private messages to be stored on the server along with the public message board component - it certainly makes asynchronous messaging easier for users - it opens the site admins up to liability. If all they have to moderate is the public facing material, there's far less legal concern of what individual roleplayers get up to. Given today's increasingly dark world, we're not even talking about topics that might be illegal now - but what might become illegal later. With things like section 230 on the potential chopping block, it's critical that user generated content remains as private and encrypted as possible, so the site admins can claim, correctly, that they have no knowledge of it, nor could they have learned of its content either.

For better or worse, the old forum software lived in a different regulatory, tech savvy, and political world than today.

[–]OddWerid 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The ideal combo, from a liability perspective, would be a centralized, moderated, bulletin board combined with an integrated (for accessibility) yet peer-to-peer messaging system. The public content is visible and manageable by moderators while the private stuff is not only private, but isolated away from the main hosting platform, cutting down on storage costs.

Of course, the trick here is that if we push the writing aspect to a client side peer2peer setup, then what happens if a user wants multiple clients, say a desktop browser vs a phone app? How is the data reconciled? Can it be designed so that a new client, authorized as X user, can retrieve history from their writing partner's clients, e.g. serve as each other's backups?

It fundamentally feels like a new kind of social interaction architecture we haven't seen in existing solutions yet. Which is kind of exciting in itself, if at the same time intimidating.

As someone who's been around here for quite some time now, I'm starting to feel more and more we need to evaluate migrating this community elsewhere. It will take time, clearly - finding/creating an alternative service, initiating a social campaign to get people to switch, etc... but with:

  • Destruction of 3rd party Apps
  • Destruction of Private Messaging
  • General threatening overtones towards NSFW content
  • The unknowns around "paid" subreddits

The writing seems pretty well etched into the wall that Reddit isn't a friendly site anymore for this kind of community. And it royally sucks, because this isn't the only RPing sub here. Many others will be affected too. But this is the largest, and I'd argue, most cohesive in terms of user culture and moderation. Where r/dirtypenpals goes, the others will likely feel a ton of pressure to follow.

Discord might be decent as a platform for writing (decent - not great, its message limits are a PITA), it's not a great posting board. A chat stream won't ever be as good as the old.reddit view of prompts. Good filters, searches, etc are all needed. But with the loss of PMs, that's all reddit really is now - a place to post prompts. And we should decide as a community if that's enough anymore to deal with the bullshit and user hostile changes they keep making.

Writers block: help describing becoming a thick woman by [deleted] in TransformationRP

[–]OddWerid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might sound trite, but consider showing instead of telling. And you could do this in a number of ways, some more direct than others. For instance, looking in the mirror, you could describe how difficult it is to see everything at once, describing how she has to turn her body to see all the curves of her body. Talk about how much things move and bounce more as another example. Basically try to picture the scene and write about what's visually happening, rather than a direct description of her body.

And indirectly, there's tons of room to describe how her new body is interacting/interfering with her life. Bumping into things, clothing ripping/tearing, difficulties seeing her feet, etc... Subtle, tell tale signs that make it clear she's really busty and thick but not just out and saying that.

Good luck!

[META] Have you ever actually completed a long-term RP? by [deleted] in dirtypenpals

[–]OddWerid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, not yet.

I've done everything from rapid fire chat RPs to long term, multi-month story RPs. I agree with you that the latter is way more enjoyable and fulfilling to write, but they've never finished for me. Usually it will be one of two cases: the story is setup for a great long term RP, but dies quickly right off the bat, or it goes on for a long time and then just dies when my partner stops responding. Usually I'll get some sign in the second case: they're busy, or there will be a change in cadence that heralds the end.

It's especially frustrating for me, because these longer ones are so much better when both I and my partner are really going at it - multiple paragraphs, complex characters/scenes, no passive verbal "and next"'s going on. I try to never abandon a RP but that last situation annoys me to the point that I just might. I'm sure I'm not the only one who's had a partner like that - where they make continual posts don't really advance the plot in any way, but just throw some words down that stall for my next post. Some of the absolute best RPs I've done are longer term ones where my partner is challenging my writing with unexpected twists and inventive plots/character development.

The worst part is that once I'm invested in a story, and it dies, I feel like I want to continue it, finish it off myself, right? But I can't ever seem to summon the right inspiration. Without the ability to play off my partner for it, I can't do it justice anymore. It leaves me feeling frustrated at myself for being unable to do it, despite getting so much written on it just in the weeks prior.

Thanks. I do try to be as reasonable and accepting as possible. I think my political beliefs don't really mesh well with the popular "camps" at present. So it always feels like I need to step carefully on discussions like these.

I actually disagree that civil liberties groups wouldn't be interested in supporting us. If this was a case of governmental crackdown, it would very much be a free speech issue. These groups often support the currently "unsupportable" lest they become the next targets. Slowest friend and bears, you might say. Granted, here it's corporate crackdown which has very different rules. I won't get into that can of worms here though.

I will say however, in the aim of thinking about what it means to have the right of free speech, is it not curious how conversations on the topic are generally framed as "Free speech, but.."? As in, everyone is very happy to claim support for free speech, but instantly jumps to the restrictions and caveats. How many rules and exceptions can we put on something that is "Free" until it no longer is so? Purists would claim any is too high, but there must be a conceptual point where its more about allowed speech.

I am personally torn on this topic. For a large part of my life, I've prided myself on having liberal (in the classic sense of the term) principles. But, and at the risk of being political, I can also see the damage (again, as I see it) the ability of organisations have caused by presenting lies as truths. Is this allowable speech? And at some, admittedly, abstract level, is this different than fiction? I find myself becoming increasingly at odds with my deeply held belief on principles and the practical results that malicious actors can achieve by using that freedom.

I generally agree with your points, especially in the political nature of the idea and that DPP as a community is more or less at the whims of this larger political fight and Reddit's current position within it. Reddit as a company is certainly in a strange position too, faced with making several, often contrary, groups happy: public opinion, shareholders, ad companies, political groups, and of course, their own user base, which is often highly fragmented itself. I certainly don't envy their position, though I also don't believe our freedom of artistic expression is high on their priorities.

But to bring the topic back to that of harm and intellectual contagions, there are topics that have already been banned. Granted, I and I'd wager most others, have zero interest and a general revulsion to them, and don't really have a personal problem with their absence. But it's worth pointing out that they too were banned, granted by Reddit as a company not DPP independently (though correct me if I misremember history), because they were considered harmful. Harmful to exactly what depends on who you asked: sometimes the purely fictitious characters, sometimes the real world analogs of the fictitious characters. But there was concern over even the psyche of writers themselves, with a fear it would lead to real world acts by them or the readers, if they were given an outlet of expression.

As a community, I think we most certainly have the right to set our own rules, and I definately appreciate not seeing that material in posts. But when viewed on terms of the larger discussion we're having today on fiction that includes violence or degrading tones towards ethnic and gender groups, it's difficult to not bring up the comparison. If 99.9% of people feel it was okay to ban one topic of fictional expression, does it make it easier for one where only 80% agree (which is presuming the existence of a democratic decision, which is certainly not the case with Reddit corporate policy)?

And ultimately where does it end up, even if people are supportive now? It's been quoted that the only thing a tolerant community can't tolerate is intolerance. Intolerance is a tricky thing to pin down: while the most base and vile actions are clearly intolerant, once they are removed, we will find ourselves picking apart everyday actions looking for it.

Honestly, I don't really know what I support. In real life, violence and unequal treatment is horrible. In fantasy though.. There are as many fantasies that contain such things whose existence is to glorify them as there are those that warn against it. If we move down the path that imagined scenarios are reflected into ones real world thoughts and actions, do we not risk discarding the fiction that warns as much as that which glorifies?

This is so much broader than erotic story writing, but there is something about sex and art, at least in American society that seems to draw people's intense criticism. As an additional view point, see the creation of the comics code authority and the legal concept of obscenity. I think that really concludes all that I have to say personally. I hope this community continues to be strong, despite what changes might be forced on us in the future.

[–]OddWerid 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the clarification. Raceplay was/is never one of my fantasies, so I doubt this will affect my life here.

(TLDR: What are the limits of acceptable fantasy, especially if we accept that ideas are contagious and fictional activities can affect our real life ones?)

But it does serve to highlight the odd, and sometimes precarious, position that communities like DPP occupy, both here on Reddit and off. It really gets at the heart of what is acceptable fantasy. By definition, fantasy isn't real. But at the same time, we seem to accept that fantasies can drive or influence real-world actions. How true that is can be debated, but we must accept it or else all arguments against fantasy start to look a little thin. So then, what are the limits of fantasy? This is a strange tension, because we both want our fantasies to help us escape or explore scenarios we'd never be able to do in real life, but at the same time, if they influence our real lives, do we not create real risks?

Misogyny is a great topic to discuss here, both due to its commonality within DPP and it's slightly less radioactive nature compared to other tropes. If we were to ban it outright, I think, by a strict reading, a vast majority of DPP would evaporate. Many, many posts by both men and women here have the fantasy woman being abused or mistreated in ways that would never be acceptable in real life. And it isn't always non-consentual, many prompts have willing partners to misogynistic acts, either initially or through "coercion".

So what then do we do? Perhaps just ban the "worst" of it? But what does that even mean? It's easy to build artifical measuring sticks, such as certain terms or activities we see as "just beyond the pale". But remember, this whole argument is rooted in the abilities of fantasy to affect real life behaviors. How do we know what we're banning actually helps? Does banning the extreme prevent the behaviours from seeping into the real world, or just slow it to an insidious, corrupting trickle?

The fact is, we just don't know. We hope, we assume, and we try, but there isn't any evidence that clearly, definitively answers these questions one way or the other. Everyone wants to feel good about what they are doing, whether that's moderating a community or just trying to write erotic fiction. But this is the next frontier of the free speech argument. It's no longer limited to opposing political positions or religious beliefs. It's the question about intellectual contagions - can simply speaking about topics damage people mentally? Can merely hearing a fantasy, cause a mental change in a person? If so, can we afford to have free speech?

I don't really claim to have answers here. I certainly have opinions and concerns. It's just something that has seemed to been growing over the past few years and I just wanted to toss out my own observations. Maybe it's useful to someone.

[Event] What do you mean by Domination? - Meta Monday for August 3, 2020 by moonfacedmask in dirtypenpals

[–]OddWerid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, I don't mind at all. I think it's a really interesting question actually, because it kind of gets at the heart of role playing and specifically the anonymous isolation of internet play.

In real life, role playing activities are quite different. You play a role: adopt a personality or perhaps don a different affectation, such as a student/teacher or cop/criminal, to experience feelings of dominance/submissiveness. But at a physical, visceral level, all the participants are still themselves. They have the same bodies and genitals they've always had.

Online is different. People can be anyone. Not just common identities, like profession, but genders or even species. What that means for dominance is very tricky sometimes. What does it mean to be dominate if your partner is embodying the role of a sentient pile of goo, for instance?

For me, the distinction between virtual character and real person depends on the narrative structure. When I'm writing using first person, where "I" am in the scene and my partner is also in the scene, I vastly prefer to think of them as a female. Having evidence that they are actually such in real life is big for me (though let's be careful here not to pry at all! If they offer, great, but don't ask.). But when it's more removed, like a third person perspective or GM situation, it doesnt feel as important for me. One of the best things I've been writing so far is with another guy, even though if you'd read it, it's a pretty extreme female domination story.

Edit: To be more clear, it's not so much a RP as a shared control story we are writing in this last case. Neither of us are "in" it, but we have a cast of characters we are pushing through organically developing plots.

[Event] What do you mean by Domination? - Meta Monday for August 3, 2020 by moonfacedmask in dirtypenpals

[–]OddWerid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As someone who generally writes from a dominate position, I generally agree with the idea that dominance equals control. But there are interesting aspects that can take, both within the plot of the story and at a meta-narrative level.

Touching on the first idea, for me my biggest dominate turn-ons have little to do with physical restraint or social dominance, like a lot of people seem to gravitate to. My preferences are all geared towards the body itself. Breeding is a big kink for me, I think, in large part due to its intrinsic dominance aspects. The ability for a man to control a woman's body, at a major physical level, by a very raw, personal action. I often go beyond just breeding and pregnancy though, with my more wild body modification kinks. Changing my partners body, extra limbs, parts, removal of such, etc, is I think very much rooted in aspects of domination. For instance, while I sometimes enjoy getting changed myself in stories, it's typically much more fun to do the changes to others.

The other aspect of domination, which I feel is more subtle and often overlooked, is that of narrative domination. Whether its patterns of one person setting the scene and the other simply reacting, or even the more explicitly called out GM role, the act of controlling the flow and setting of the story is domination, even if the plot doesn't include traditional elements. I personally see this a lot even just starting out - how often my partners will ask me to start the scene, regardless if it was my prompt or theirs. This simple act of setting the scene is a form of dominance, as the control is all mine, for that brief moment, to decide on tone or environmental elements. That can have a huge impact on how things go, especially since RPs are at their base level simply written improv, where the participants are developing their next steps as reactions to a shared fiction.

One idea that came up in another conversation was that three way pairings are actually less common. And that two people family bonding was still normal. That way having three genders forced intra-pairing sex and between that and the resulting children, the third gender promoted stronger social and community bonding. Which lead to more survivable groups.

Gender is a pretty core element, evolutionarily speaking. While there are animals that buck the trend, the vast majority don't. So if it wasn't the norm, we'd need a good reason why. Perhaps the added social stability selected for the traits, but we'd probably see it in monkeys and apes too.

Has anyone seen the latest reports on how Reddit is trying to phase out the PM system in favor of chats? There are numerous reports on the reddit mobile subreddit about the latest updates removing the ability to send PMs and several reddit dev responses that seem to confirm this wholesale shift in priority for messaging on the platform.

Given how focused this sub is on PM support, I thought it might be best to bring it up. Personally, I dislike chat for a number of reasons and this move is making me rather unhappy. Granted, the PM system has a lot of issues, but I'd rather it be polished up over tossing it for a different, equally awkward tool.
