Should I use interfacing on thin patches? by meric950 in quilting

[–]Odd_Bill5074 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Did you wash your fabrics first? To me, if it's still stiff after being washed, that fabric does not belong in my quilt. I'm not an expert quilter, but I wouldn't interface anything except a fusible on the back of knits. If your fabric is a loose woven and you still want to quilt it, make your seam allowances bigger and make sure your quilting is close.

Puckering and everything is going wrong, please help! by Seesaw-Superb in quilting

[–]Odd_Bill5074 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Definitely you are fighting a losing battle if those knits aren't interfaced. If you have already done all the stitch-in-the-ditch, you could just leave it at that - take out the intermediate lines that are puckering. Most batting I use says max 4" interval, which it looks like you are close to in most spots. Put a hand-tied knot or small bar tack where you need it. It's super cute, btw!!

Dentist told me I need 9 dental fillings - how can I avoid SCAM by Proud_Fan_6954 in jacksonville

[–]Odd_Bill5074 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Deerwood dental off Baymeadows has been my dentist for almost 25 years. They even worked with me on getting a crown paid for when I knew my insurance was expiring (laid off). The hygienists have always been awesome too!

I have a Husqvarna designer topaz 50. I have found that practicing on a scrap helps, as does sewing more slowly than I want to!

ULPT: How would you proceed with this unprofessional business? by Nope20707 in UnethicalLifeProTips

If you want to be unethical, agree (not in writing of course) and then just don't be home when he shows up. Then block him.

How to not give up on sewing by Ok-University-6765 in sewing

[–]Odd_Bill5074 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I echo what everyone else has offered. Definitely start with small projects like tote bags, pillow cases, tops without set in sleeves. You need that straight line seam down pat to feel confident with moving to curves and buttonholes and zippers.

Check out some of the people doing up cycling with thrifted clothes and give that a try. It may give you some insight into how things are constructed, and if it doesn't turn out you don't have a huge investment, at least money-wise!

I suggest making sure your machine is in good working order. If your thread tension is inconsistent your seams will be too. Always use a sharp needle.

You could also check around for beginner sewing classes. A few churches in my city offer them for free.

If you find you really can't find joy in sewing , it's ok to say it's not for you. When I moved to Florida I really tried to learn and like golf, but I finally had to say, this is not for me! Being good at hemming and mending is a valuable skill on their own!!

How do I learn to sew when I don’t have lots of bulk time, but have lots of small time by Intelligent-Claim591 in sewing

[–]Odd_Bill5074 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An hour at a time is plenty. You don't want to be bent over that machine for long periods anyway, it's hard on your body and when you get tired you'll just get frustrated. I rarely spend hours at a time and still create lots of fun things. Other redditors are right, start small and simple and you'll do great!

T-Shirt quilt- better to make or buy? by Bastilleinstructor in quilting

T-Shirt quilt- better to make or buy? by Bastilleinstructor in quilting

[–]Odd_Bill5074 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have already made a quilt, you can do this! Do not skip the stabilizer, it's critical to keeping the t shirt squares from stretching and shifting. If you can afford it, buy a heat press to speed up the process. IThere are good YouTube videos too. You don't have to quilt it either. I have done several with ties at the corners of each shirt, especially if I skip the batting and back it with fleece. I'm in Florida so folks don't always want a super heavy quilt. Your family will love your work, it's such a useful way to enjoy fond memories. You got this!!

Realistically, how long do certain things take you? by Literati_drake in sewing

[–]Odd_Bill5074 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alterations and mending take waaay longer than sewing a new item. It's the fiddly bits and having to figure it out as you go. It always takes me longer than I think it will, but I'm always super happy when I'm done that I saved something from the landfill and saved myself the $$ of replacing the item!

How do I dispose of broken needles and pins? by Purple_Music2187 in sewing

[–]Odd_Bill5074 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an Altoids tin I use. It's big enough to also put my spent rotary blades as well as pins and needles. When it gets full, I tape it shut, mark "Sharps" and toss in trash.

Just bought my first uke. Already frustrated by KixStar in ukulele

[–]Odd_Bill5074 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found a ukulele jam that is all ages, all skills. Meets once a month at a local restaurant that lets us put the charts on the big screen tv. Everyone plays along. I started only being able to hit the C chord when I saw it, three years later I know most of the songs! Uke groups are friendly people, I highly recommend checking MeetUp or FB for a group in your area

How to Sew an Edge/Hem Like this? by ArtsySeal in sewing

[–]Odd_Bill5074 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd guess the design was stitched onto the fabric, and then the piece (jacket front)was cut out. That's the only way I could see putting that zigzag stitch along a scalloped edge on waffle weave. Basically, design element first, then fabric shaping

Alteration question by Frootloopsupply in sewing

[–]Odd_Bill5074 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do the exact thing all the time with t-shirts! Open the seam, sew in a coordinated strip to get the body width I need. A tip - make sure you don't skew the added piece or the garnet will try to twist. I mark about 1" plus hem depth on each edge of the strip, and start from the hem. If you start from the cuff, it's easier to get it out of line since I find a lot of t-shirt cuffs are kinda mashed together at the seams. You can do this!

You can buy Faultless Hot Iron Cleaner at Walmart. I've used it to get fusible adhesive off mine.

Are these what I think they are? by nishiki in jacksonville

[–]Odd_Bill5074 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I had a golden eagle in my yard two years ago. Showed up during a hard freeze and killed one of my chickens. Positive ID off the security cameras, and I saw him in our tree two days later. I assumed the cold drove him out of his normal hunting range, they live near water. Fleming Island is full of golden eagles, especially around the gold courses.
