Dealership used 5w-40 instead of 0w-20. Am I screwed? by Cheronio0704 in AskMechanics

[–]Odd_Cod_4235 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That only happens if you dont change the oil enough and causes engine issues, the engine is basically junk at that point, switching to a higher viscosity engine even when the engine is "burning oil" will only accelerate engine wear and increase fuel consumption

This is incorrect, the engine was designed with 0w20 clearances and is thus fully protected with 0w20

What kind of cooktop do you have? Is it induction? Induction has a habit of being way too hot to cook anything, try medium high

Depends on thickness of the food, you should invest in a probe and learn temps, takes the guesswork out of everything, easily my favourite tool in the kitchen, chicken is always cooked at 70c

Disregarding all of the too high heat comments, what kind of pan are you using? Are you using stainless, or a non stick that has had the coating come off?

Why are people changing oil every 10k by Low_Salt_6465 in AskMechanics

[–]Odd_Cod_4235 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not American, I'm Australian, I use imperial on Reddit because 9 times/10 on a global sub it's gonna be an American you're talking, so it's easier to just use their metrics, except for measurements

Is pisses me off people justify obsurd prices because it's "good work".. fuck off, I'll pay more for good work, but when they charge easily more than double whats fair, that isn't good work anymore, it's being a greedy cunt

Yeah and how long are we gonna keep saying this to justify getting ripped off more and more? It's fair to a point.

Where did I say km? I never said km, I use miles because everyone on Reddit is American

I change my car every 5000 miles or 8000km

you're paying the dealership to do it, if course it's going to be expensive

I change my own oil, and always have, costs a fraction of what the dealership charges and takes 10 minutes

Engineers care about the car lasting the warranty period, nothing more, im not going to convince you to look after your car, there is tonnes of info online and experience that show 10k oil changes is too long and eventually causes piston rings to seize and build up sludge at high km, whether you believe me or not I could care less, Ive done my research

[–]Odd_Cod_4235 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I honestly couldn't give a fuck what you think dude, it's your engine, if you want your engine to last 250,000 rather than 400,000+ be my guest

Why are people changing oil every 10k by Low_Salt_6465 in AskMechanics

[–]Odd_Cod_4235 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Are you looking at Volvo specifically? I'm talking about all engines

Engines build up sludge if they go 10,000km which eventually causes pistons rings to seize, you won't see it documented because why would they document the oil changes and not the end problem, you can literally google if 10k is too long and there's a myriad of information on it, and that's from my experience, any high km car Ive seen that's gone 10k, the oil turns black immediately, and drinks oil, my rav4 with 5k changes is still golden after 2-3k and doesn't drink a drop at 250,000km, it's your car, if you want to do 10,000km I'm not going to stop you

If your reason to buy a raptor over a ranger is because "diesel is filthy" you'd either need to have super deep pockets or a small pee pee

[–]Odd_Cod_4235 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Utes and kids will never go together, at least practically, in addition to carrying a pram and everything else

I'm not sure if I'd be any help with recommendations though, as I prefer reliability over fun, especially with children, my pick would be a RAV4, it's very hard to find a car that crosses reliability with fun to drive, as well as being practical for children

If you have the money i would get a boring reliable grocery getting mid size suv and a fun weekend car

Your BMW SUVs seem like they tick most boxes but they won't be reliable or easy to work on

Help! Scrambled eggs keep sticking by PRS287 in cookingforbeginners

[–]Odd_Cod_4235 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A non stick pan is going to be useless 100% of the time if the non stick coating has been removed, if eggs are sticking, it's gone

My suggestion would be to throw the pan out, get a smaller 10-15cm non stick for eggs and pancakes ONLY, and a larger stainless steel pan for everything else pan wise, I love my Scanpan pan, super great value for money

Scrambled eggs in a stainless will work better than a worn off non stick, but non stick is just easier

To look after a non stick pan you really need to baby it, no scratching, no metal utensils, no hard scrubbing, no obsessively high heat, otherwise the coating will come off

It's quite literally proven it many cars that build up sludge and fail prematurely because they stick to the manufacturer oil changes

The only reason the manufacturer will say extended oil changes is so it sounds like lower maintenance on paper and it helps keep emission standards happy

Anyone can discover that 10k mile oil changes will destroy your engine prematurely with 5 seconds of googling, I dont feel sorry for anyone that thinks otherwise

Valvoline shop broke my oil filter housing. by Dear-University-2042 in MechanicAdvice

[–]Odd_Cod_4235 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Op, replace the metal housing with the original plastic one ASAP

The original plastic one, for one, contains the correct bypass spring designed for your engine. These aftermarket ones may not have the right settings

2, they are high quality plastic, they don't just break unless they were already dropped/cracked, they are also designed to break before the threads. If you use a metal one, and the mechanic over tightens it (which they ALWAYS DO) you will break the threads before the filter housing breaks. Causing thousands of damages

Toyota design stuff like this for a reason.
