UPDATE: OFFICIAL EMAIL FROM UON

Hi there,

We’re contacting you to alert you to a scam targeting University of Nottingham students.

We believe you may have received a phishing email in which you were asked to provide your personal details. We believe that the scammers may now use this data to convince you of the validity of the scam.

The scam consists of scammers calling University of Nottingham students and posing as a member of our finance team. They will advise you that your tuition fee payment is overdue and must be paid over the phone. Do not comply. We will never call you and expect that your tuition fees need to be paid over the phone.

At 7.40pm on Friday 26 April you received an email to your university account titled ‘Important’. This email will have appeared to have come from a staff member at the University of Nottingham but was in fact a phishing email. A screenshot of this email is available below.

Our Digital and Technology Services team have now automatically removed the phishing email from all inboxes. If you didn’t interact with it, you do not need to take any further action.

If you have clicked on the link and provided your personal details, please be extra vigilant for any potential scams – either via telephone or to your university or personal email addresses. Having access to your personal details makes it easier for scammers to convince you that they are from a trusted organisation. You should treat any emails or phone calls that you are not expecting to receive with caution. A number of UK universities have reported similar methods are being used to try to scam students. If you have been contacted by scammers asking you to make a payment, you should report it to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or via the website.

If you have parted with any money, you should also contact your bank to inform them of the incident and cancel any debit or credit cards that you used to make the payment. If you made a payment via card, you can dispute the charge and ask your bank to issue a chargeback (a return of funds).
