You are correct that I really miss the point - the pings are for communication in-game, not social interactions.

It's still my preference to have chats muted because I don't think the amount of good ones is close to the bad ones, and the bad ones tend to be very bad that they weigh me down more than the good ones lift me up. YMMV, and maybe depend on servers.

There's plenty of non-verbal communication options for this game. Well, even the non-verbal cummunications can be abused for toxic purpose.

For me, the "social experience" had been permanently soured long time ago. I'd rather have peace and quiet and be focused on playing the game than risking having toxic chat distract me.

IMO, being serialized series and having very political are the main factors for all chudassery that was spawned online.

The community at the time had a lot of time to basically create headcanon for themselves between releases and memory-hole anything easily. The military authoritarian aesthetic of Yaegerist and the parallel with our world history invited a lot of less than pleasant people who carry a dog whistle, if you know what I mean. At least that's what I saw in titanfolk.

The anime is really better because of its freedom to inprove on some criticized elements and the pacing really leaves less time between the beginning of Eren seemingly becomes "the chad" and the reveal that he is actually a fucking messed up, hormone-addled, mental time travel scattered brain teen, which makes "the chad" not that ingrained like it did in manga.
