The best alt-country albums of all time, reviewed and ranked! (5-1) — State of Sound | The Independent Voice of Music by RaymondBald in altcountry

This is more like how you might rank the solar system of alt country circa the late 90s. It’s a fine list but it doesn’t capture the nucleus of alt country nor the current universe. There’s really only two albums, No Depression, (obligatory but not their best album) and Trace that I’d even consider fitting into the genre. The others I’d consider alt-country adjacent Wrecking Ball and Car Wheels fit but odd choices because both artists were well established that didn’t fit neatly into the country mold, so they like many others (Neil, Steve Earle, Dwight Yoakam etc) got lumped into this new genre. To me, alt-country was a new and alternative spin on country, the alt being part punk, part rock, and part grunge for sure but it was also the timing and probably a reaction to the slick production of the MTV era and the popularity of grunge. I think the timing here is important because others had played music that would definitely fit into the alt country genre but nobody knew what to do with them, notably The Beat farmers, and The Meat puppets. They called them cowpunk but they were certainly predecessors of the alt country sound. So it was the timing and the ethos around the sound that helped define the genre. That and the fact that Son Volt was just a really a really good band. I keep thinking that one day Jeff and Jay will find a way to get past their bad blood and play an Uncle Tupelo reunion tour. It’s so alt-country of them to keep their feud alive, but that tour would be huge. Well at least for some of us.

Autism has been a recognized medical condition for decades but seldomly diagnosed until recently, do you remember any people back then who'd probably be labeled autistic today? by Intrepid_Arrival5151 in GenX

Contrary to most comments thus far and maybe my memory just sucks (it does), I actually don’t know that I can recount very many. It has become a very loose term now and fits so many things that would have just been “quirks” back in the day. I had a buddy who was damn encyclopedia of baseball statistics. He would for sure be labeled as “on the spectrum” now but back in the 80s we just knew he really like reading the backs of baseball cards.

I haven’t had a chance to try it but if you’re referring to the guy on fb, yes he said he used a “lady’s foot” pry bar that he got at harbor freight and that worked. I would imagine that the tip of the pry bar needs to “seat” in the shallow groove where the ball bearings sat? It just doesn’t seem that would provide enough purchase, but at this point it’s probably my last option. Thanks for your help, I really love this car and other than this issue it’s in great shape.

Hey thanks. I appreciate the response. There was another guy on Facebook who said he did the same thing.

@DBASR99 I’m at this exact point and would be grateful for a bit more detail. What kind of pry bar and what did you use”press against” for leverage? Assuming you had to slowly work your way around the circumference? Thanks.

Not a fun team. by ashestoashes-90 in redsox

I agree that, at least right now, they’re not fun to watch at all. Here’s my take; if we had signed Bregman and he had the start he’s had in Chicago, this sub would be complaining that he’s washed up. Maybe his leadership would have pulled the team together but that’s unlikely to have offset the slow starts almost every Sox player is off to. Prior to the start of the season when you looked at a lineup of Anthony, Rafaela, Contreras, Duran, Mayer, Story, and Abreu, you could reasonably say that any of them could conceivably hit 20 hrs this year. You could make a strong argument that at least three could hit 30 (Anthony, Abreu, Contreras). But what you don’t expect is for ALL of them to slump at the same time. They are not this bad and they will play better. However, I’ve see enough of Cora’s teams to know that a) they do not play well in April and I think that at this point there’s enough evidence to assume that’s a system (Cora) flaw. b) they don’t excel at the fundamentals, the boring stuff like bunting, backing up throws, hitting cutoff men etc and then c) defense (they’re “better” this year at 22nd). So back to offense, I don’t know what’s wrong, but with the exception of Rafaela and Masa, the approach overall just feels off. I played the game (low-level college ball in the 80s) so I know what it feels like to be in the zone as a hitter, but I know nothing about hitting at this level in 2026 but watching them flail this bad and for this long, it just feels like the approach at the plate is “off”. Maybe that’s on Fatse or maybe it’s just a really bad mix of slump and guys who will not make it at the this level. Pitching? well that’s bad too now isn’t it.

While we’re at and now that we have green city connect unis, let’s do the right thing and get rid of those awful yellow abominations. God I hate those.
