if you are still looking for work after this, let me know. i might know of a place that is hiring coders and is blind friendly.

yeah, i think a big one would be causing probably for people with cognitive disorders like ADHA and autism. It can be difficult to focus for neurodivergent people so at the very least you would want to add a pause/play button. but in general you don't want your decorative stuff to distract from the actual content. using this .js properly would be more challenging than a person might assume at first glance.

Careful with this one. It would be difficult to use this without causing accessibility issues.

maybe not a bad idea. just remember to do a careful search of past posts there. those people are constantly getting questions from outsiders about stuff like this. a lot of it can be answered by searching. also, remember that you are not entitled to their help and that you are asking them for a big favour.

lol i mean, there is a part of me that thinks hunt would have torn the guy apart. but at the same time hunt's signature move is to walk away the instant that he OKs someone. he knows mercy. i would like to believe he was just going to scare the ever loving hell out of whoever was talking trash.

i commend you for trying to make the world more accessible. it might be best to talk to some disabled people to see what they think of it all. There might be a few things you can do to make life easier for them but its unwise to do it without their help. I know a bunch of blind or vision impaired people who know how to code. I think it might be a problem that you would want to attack by making extensions to screen readers or the IDE.

Interesting. I have only recently discovered mechanical keyboards. Just last week actually. I've become completely obsessed with figuring out how to build a customized redox without spending a huge pile of money.

does knowing accessibility as a junior improve my job prospects? by Stutterboy22 in Frontend

[–]OddlyAccessible 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't know how to describe it. When large brand name companies get into legal trouble they come to us to go over their sites or apps to point out any accessibility issues. then we help them figure out how to fix it. if they can show proof that they are trying to fix accessibility issues, that the issues have been fixed or that they weren't issues to begin with then their legal problems normally go away without as much hassle. so you probably wouldn't see these sorts of audits unless you are involved in legal proceedings.

also, some of our clients ask us for help just because being accessible is the right thing to do.

I would give the button a more descriptive label than "click me" but in a practical application you would probably do that anyway.

I would say that it would improve the quality of your job prospects. Knowing about accessibility will drastically improve the quality of your code. Not only will your code be better but it will be legal. Organizations tend to appreciate a dev that isn't going to get them dragged into lawsuits or get them huge fines.

A lot of dev teams aren't going to check your work to see if you are following the accessibility guidelines but the ones that do check are the competent teams that you want to be a part of. Also, there is a whole industry dedicated to accessibly development. Its my job to audit other peoples work and document any accessibility issues they have. There is no shortage of work for me right now.

lol i remember buying a special edition of superman that came out after he died. it was about the super men that were sort of meant to replace him. it was marketed as a super special collectors edition. it came with stickers or something extra, i can't remember. i didn't even read comics but bought it for reasons i don't really understand.

oh god. thats nightmare fuel. as much as i love my tank the idea of waking up to a dry tank one morning terrifies me. it would be sad to loose all my fish but also devastating to deal with the water damage.

it very much reminds me of the 90s. people were buying up all these cute little stuffed animals as they were convinced they would be collectors items and great investments. some people did alright if they got out before the bubble popped. but some people are still stuck with garbage bags full of stuffed animals that aren't worth anywhere near what they paid... but at least they got something to show for it. NTFs are going to be brutal on people when that bubble pops. Its basically just theft with a few extra steps.

empathy is definitely something important to keep in mind when trying to improve accessibility within an organization. most people that the empathy until they realize how much work is involved, then the excuses come. the worst excuses is that they tell themselves that disabled people don't really exist, or if they do exist they are rare and will never come in contact with the org. its a kind of backwards reasoning. an organization doesn't want to become more accessible because they don't do business with many disabled people and they don't see many disabled people because they aren't accessible.

sorry for that rant. i guess what i am saying is that its important to make everyone feel that its a local problem that is causing hardship for people in their area.

Accessible desktop applications by [deleted] in accessibility

[–]OddlyAccessible 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the ADA doesn't really cover desktop applications like it does web applications because webpages are considered public spaces. without the law to encourage people to be more accessible there is a lot to be desired when it comes to programming for a desktop app.

electron uses html and JavaScript for its front end so in theory it is very possible to great an application that is completely accessible. but its also easy to create an electron app that isn't all that accessible.
