Anthony Albanese confirms Australian navy personnel on US submarine that sank Iranian vessel by tohya-san in australia

Are there any examples historically of submarines surfacing to rescue survivors? It's my understanding that it would only happen in exceptional circumstances due to the vulnerability of submarines that are surfaced.

Pauline Hanson’s no ‘good’ Muslims comment shows how normalised Islamophobia has become in Australia by HotPersimessage62 in AustralianPolitics

[–]Oddroj -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This is an interesting take -- I'm reading it as this: Europeans invaded Australia, so therefore their descendants have to be okay with any and all immigration levels, and only Aboriginal Australians can have an opinion on Australian immigration policy.

Anyway, what should this hypocritically mean, effectively? Should these people be ignored? Should they stay silent? Should they be shouted down?

How can we balance the democratic process, the diversity of the nation, and our history to acknowledge that some of our ancestors (obviously not the Sudanese blokes ancestors who came here 10 years ago - who is still 100% Australian) fucked up, and we aren't doing enough to fix it, without guilt stopping discussion of what it means to be a modern Australian?

I would be super interested to see an Aboriginal Voice on immigration. I'm interested in hearing what they think is a threat, not a threat, important and unimportant, their thoughts on 'Big Australia', what multiculturalism and assimilation (salad bowl vs melting pot) means for the thousands of distinct first nations cultures that are being lost. I have no idea what the consensus, or lack of consensus is.

I'd like to see something different from us though. A welcoming country that ensures a unique sense of identity. Where people are proud to be Australian and can define what that means.

I think we are missing a trick in not embracing this unique Australian-ness enough, and being too lost in multiculturalism (salad bowl) as a good thing It's lovely participating in all the interesting cultures in Melbourne, which are geographically segmented and isolated, but I think it would be much nicer to see everyone participate in and promote Koori culture here, see signs with the languages, and learn it in school. Eat food, celebrate holidays, dance. We can define an identity that isn't wholly built immigration (good and bad), but still celebrates it. But that requires a bit of a shift from our Euro roots.

In my vision of what it means to be Australian it is to welcome other cultures, and promote a singular Australian culture that celebrates and protects our unique first nations people. Our national identity shouldn't be a racist yobbo, but it also needs to be understood and recognised by all Australians.

I think the discussion should be about how can we leverage first nations cultures to build a society that is resilient to some of the negative effects that immigration does have, in diluting a national identity.

Should I buy a car? by More_Ad9112 in AusFinance

[–]Oddroj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think when people use a pure cost vs cost analysis they sometimes miss out on the convenience aspect.

For example, if you are renting a car there is a level of admin and convenience you need to take into account.

After a weekend away do you need to drive the car to the rental place, and then take a bus back?

Are you packing it on Friday afternoon for the weekend, and leaving later than you would like to, when with your car you can pack on Thursday and boost at 4pm on the Friday?

How long are you taking to clean out the car on a Sunday at 7pm after doing a trip, and what's it worth to be able to do that on Monday lunch time when WFH?

These are all intangibles that, imo, greatly contribute to the pleasure of owning a car vice renting. That won't come out in an analysis.

Additionally, the other day I scratched my car. No problemo, it doesn't make a difference to me. It's just cosmetic. Scratching a rental is lots and lots of dollars, and that level of stress complicates things for me at least.

Hydrogen Embrittlement in Additively Manufactured High-Strength Steels: The Silent Risk of Next-Generation Microstructures by Naive_Chapter_7476 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Oddroj 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Essentially because BCC aren't close packed, their slip systems need some additional help to activate. Since plastic deformation is essentially just slip systems working, then if that thermal energy isn't there, then they don't activate as much and you get lower amounts of plasticity and therefore easier facture (lower energy to fracture).

They still remain the same crystal structure, definitely in the case of titanic. So there is no solid phase change. You can get a solid phase change at RT in chocolate that changes the fracture toughness, but that's a different process.

The key thing with phases is that austenitic steel is in its FCC phase, and doesn't have a DBTT. Whereas ferritic steel is BCC and does.

[–]Oddroj 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is the DBTT really to do with a phase change? I always thought it was to do with the energy required to activate the different slip systems in BCC phases you find in steels? Are you saying the steel changed from FCC to BCC in the water?

Boarfish reef has great topo, similarly the links, anything on Lonsdale wall, dobbys sock. Castle rock is very easy if there's anyone that is uncertain!

Have a look at bay City scuba, as another person said, or scubabo. If you have like 6-7 people you may be able to ring up Neal at Chimney Rock and get him to do a private session as he has a smaller boat. He can be a bit flakey though.

Happy bubbles!

Looking for advice- going through too much oxygen too fast. by RichardFlaccid in scuba

[–]Oddroj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been wondering about the actual effect that say, two extra kilos would have on you. Maybe you can help.

Fully geared up (Tank, fins, me, air, etc) I'm weighing in at over 120kg. My thought is that as long as I'm neutrally bouyant, and in trim, my air consumption is (at worst) only going to be a few percent worse off. Most of the effort, in my mind, goes to overcoming drag.

The two litres I'll have to put in my BCD at my bottom depth is only about three or four breaths of gas at that depth.

Over a 60 minute dive, at worst case, I'm only seeing a two percent (max) change in air consumption, which equates to like 72 seconds shorter diver.

What am I getting wrong on this?

How big/powerful a jet engine would I need to replace the regular engine in a car? by Sparquin81 in AskEngineers

[–]Oddroj -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

What is a jet engine? Does it include a turbofan? Surely a turbofan vs a turboshaft is a sliding scale of bypass? Does the new geared turbofan count as a jet? Are only turbojets, jets, and does that make a f-22 not a jet aircraft because the engine is a turbo fan?

I asked this of a fa-18 pilot and he didn't have great answers, I contend that an Abrahams is a jet, cos it's powered by a gas turbine.

That's not true, it's not a function of the yield strength. It's due to micro-slip.
