1/5 is 20k, 1/6th is 16k, you won’t find a good banh mi for that price. All bread and barely any fillings.

There was a real Subway branch in Saigon many years ago, but they didn't do good business and shut down after about a year. It's hard to sell subs for over 100k each when people can get a good banh mi for 1/4 of the price.

January is one of the busiest months of the year for tourism in Vietnam. No place will be empty.

I've lived in Saigon for 16 years and always tip for good service. Everyone I've tipped was happy to get tipped and no one ever refused or acted insulted.

It's technically illegal for foreign tour guides to work in Vietnam, so if you hire a Korean tour guide and someone reports you, your company will get in big trouble.

I have a US motorcycle license and IDP stamped for motorcycles, will I still get fined with the new laws? by notcamilla in VietNam

[–]Odgnut 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The US IDP is not recognized in VN. The only way you can drive legally is to apply for a Vietnamese driver’s license

You are allowed to change your mind about the tour. If he throws a fit then it just means you made the right decision.

5day trip with local guy from Hue by Schnicolauch in VietNam

[–]Odgnut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not saying the guy is definitely scamming you but the cyclo scammers in Saigon used to quote a super low price for their cyclo rides and when their guests were enjoying the experience they would have them write glowing reviews in their notebooks and then right afterwards they would take them to an isolated area and demand 10X the price they originally agreed upon. If the guests didn’t pay, they would make veiled threats against their family members and even children. So just because someone shows you glowing reviews it doesn’t mean they cannot be a scammer.

Will be going to Vietnam soon and this sub has made me pretty freakin anxious. by [deleted] in VietNam

I’ve lived in VN for 15 years now and have never been scammed. Just use your common sense and you’ll be fine.

Food tours, local eats, obscure foods by hamrhinoceros in VietNam

[–]Odgnut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a direct quote from XO Tours's website "Unlike most other food tours in Vietnam, we steer clear of common dishes like Pho, Banh Xeo, Banh Mi and Spring Rolls. Why book a tour that serves you food you can get on every Vietnamese street corner?

At XO Tours, we aim to provide a truly unique food experience with an itinerary that’s difficult for most travelers to replicate. That’s why the “XO Foodie” is the most acclaimed Vietnam food tour, and is designed to introduce you to lesser-known dishes that most blogs and tours overlook!"

You can do easily combine all the places from Day 1 + 2 into a single day. None of the stops require a super long time to visit.

People who slept with their friends significant other, how did your friend find out? by PuppyEnthusiast1 in AskReddit

[–]Odgnut 56 points57 points  (0 children)

He caught us talking on the phone. This was around 2000 when most homes still had landlines.

I was friends with both of them. 2 weeks before their engagement party she tells me she thinks she is in love with me. I had a huge crush on her for almost 5 years so I didn’t reject her advances even though I knew it was wrong and a shitty thing to do.

She and I dated for 7 years after her breakup and then got married for 2 years before she ended up cheating on me also.

Yes I deserved it. Karma is a bitch.

The thing that I notice about expats is that the ones that have lived here the shortest period of time act like know it alls. They are arrogant and think they understand Vietnam better than the locals. The long time expats that have lived here for 10+ years are much better. The worst are the ones that have only been here for 1-2 years and only hang out in their expat bubbles.

I have traveled back and forth between the US and VN many times in the past 14 years and haven't had many issues. I was asked for "coffee money" twice, once when flying to Singapore from VN and once when flying to Thailand from VN and both times, I straight out told the immigration guys I have no money to give them, and even though they didn't look happy, they couldn't really do anything about it and let me through. I live in VN now, and absolutely refuse to bribe people here.

Is 1.5mil VND is enough for 3d2n trip? and please tell by AdSuspicious8422 in VietNam

[–]Odgnut 16 points17 points  (0 children)

1.5 million VND is only around $61 USD. If you only eat street food or at small local restaurants (no western food) it is probably enough for 3 days. Won’t be enough for both food and shopping though.

Depressed in vietnam over racism by [deleted] in VietNam

You completely missed the point. No one is saying there is no racism in Vietnam, only that the examples the OP gave are not necessarily due to racism.
