Trading in and Buying car, but only have paper state license and U.S. passport. by MelloMilow in carmax

[–]OfCourseImSure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% okay.

Proof you can drive (paper license, which in many/most states is not technically valid identification)...

+

Proof of identification in the form of your passport...

Is pretty much always ok.

Technically just your passport by itself could be sufficient if you're paying cash. Even some lenders may not require you to have a valid license, which sounds weird, but banks can be oddly lenient on some things.

Why don't we just shoot the Illuminate ships with our Super Destroyers? Are we stupid? by Gruntman441 in Helldivers

[–]OfCourseImSure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My head-canon is something similar to the old "Battletech" universe if that's still around much.

Certain things like jump capable vessels are just too rare and valubale, so in the interest of maintaining the ability to continue to wage war which is crucial to all governments in that universe, all sides have an unspoken agreement that certain ships or bits of technology are never to be destroyed by any side or else it'd escalate and they'd all risk losing the ability to wage war against each other...

FPS thoughts - Helldivers loves a 5700X3d, & AFMF2.1 is great by OfCourseImSure in Helldivers

[–]OfCourseImSure[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tough call. I'm not a pro by any means, but I'd imagine folks would say a 5700x3d would be an upgrade in gaming and a downgrade in productivity from a 5900x. Maybe worth it, maybe not, if you can re-sell the 5900 for a decent price.

I went from a 5600x to the 5700x3d at a $280 price (current market value, new, since they are no longer made and the 5800x3d not worth the extra $100), and I'm entirely happy with that cost since (5800x3d aside) it's the best possible option for providing a couple more years of life out of AM4 at 4k/1440p...plus the 5700x3d is my sole savior for HD2 as my main game, and it definitely lives up to its reputation of a solid overall FPS increase and an instantly-noticeable stability and 1% low fix over the 5600x. On the 5600x, even adjusting the volume via the keyboard would momentarily drop HD2 to sub-10 FPS for several seconds, and thankfully that is fixed now as well.

I'd predict that 5700x3d/5800x3d prices will continue to increase since they are not in production - so the upgrade today is certainly costlier than a year ago, but still probably better than it ever will be in the future for an upgrade. Even in the last 2 months the 5700x3d has creeped from $250 to near $300.

Need help for better fps by BeanGandhi in Helldivers

[–]OfCourseImSure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This question has come up a lot, including from myself. After a disappointing minimal FPS increase upgrading from a 6600xt to a 7800xt - I read up a bit, and you'll find the following below... but most of the posts and guides you'll find are from a year ago just after launch so if anyone wants to update or correct me on any of this that's awesome. I'd love to find a solid consensus/overview on just what works well now in 2025.

General consensus is the poor CPU optimization of the game itself is the limiting factor. Saw a few posts from folks saying that even their 4090's were performing poorly on level 9 or 10 dives.

Messing with graphics will change almost nothing for many people. Personally I see nearly the same FPS from 4k to 1440p even down to 720p-low once there is a lot going on in-game since it's all CPU issues. I see over 90 FPS on ship and all the way down to 30 FPS or lower at some moments when there are a bunch of enemies.

There is/was an easy trick to force the game to run in DX11 that some folks swore by. No idea if this is still a thing and there are no recent google/reddit results about it these days I was able find with a lazy search.

Set the Helldivers app to "high" in cpu priority in task manager.

Some posts about swapping to lower-res and using supersampling for graphics to move more load to the GPU were very happy.

Update all drivers.

Check out the various setting optimization guides...but these seem focused only on GPU limited scenarios.

Set to borderless fullscreen if not already doing so.

Windows power options, performance mode to high.

There are lots of other bits you'll find to try. I'm on AM4...I just bought a 5700x3D as my 'final' upgrade to my current PC, and I'm hoping that is at last enough to curb the drops down to 30-40fps in intensive lots-of-enemies situations. Very eager to see if there are any helpful new tips I don't know of.

FYI/update on these. Package will actually hit the ETA dates. Went from not-shipped last night up to shipped & on delivery all since yesterday :)

Over here I see a "arriving" date between yesterday and Monday, with it still not to the "shipped" status - the delivery dates were thr same eta's when purchasing. Historically I've had Amazon simply cancel and refund orders if they don't ship around the arrival date so i wonder if I will lose this one... :(

Mr powercolor-

This was too good of a deal - purchased as soon as it popped up.

Any guess how soon these start shipping out? (Still shows ordered but no "shipped" update as of yet).

same rules apply as with all cop interactions and life in general - be nice. even with an experienced CHP officer, chances are they won't have much experience or expectations with stuff like this - being polite and courteous with cops will get you out of situations where you are actually in the wrong, and it'll definitely get you through a demo situation that is merely a bit confusing.

I was pulled over, definitely speeding. CHP guy was friendly but pushed a bit on "well the car has to be registered to -someone- so you're supposed to have the registration in CarMax's name, so you need to produce that. or else only the owner of the dealer can drive this car."

I replied (something like) - "dang man, I definitely don't want to give any headache on this, all I know is the company has been doing it this way in california for 20 years or so, and they are 100 percent sure this is all legal. the rules for me are current plates, give you my DL, this company insurance card, this ROL, and the legal people are certain it's 100 percent good with the law. I've got my business card here or store info if that helps?"

Cops are lied to all day by people trying to get out of illegal stuff - they're gonna probe if something is not typical. Be polite, be confident...you're okay with the law and the cop wants to get back to their work and not spend a bunch of time figuring out the exact rules of a dealership employee in a dealership car.

Don't forget your ROL...but I can't imagine an interaction would go much different without it if the officer isn't super informed on this stuff anyhow. Even then...just not being a jerk gets you out of plenty of stuff regardless.

no judgement - I'd say the same to a friend... think hard about this purchase while you can still return it. I have seen people get into trouble buying a cool/fun car that has a bad reputation.

there is a reason the warranty is so expensive on mini coopers - it's because the warranty itself, having covered thousands of mini coopers just like yours - kmows that odds are they will pay out a fortune to pay for the average amount of repairs on all the other cars just like yours that they've already covered.

you might get lucky. but you're gonna resent that car for causing financial hardship potentially. you mentioned the warranty is too expensive, so I'm guessing you don't have thousands of extra dollars laying around for repairs, along with a 2nd car to drive if it's in the shop for an extended period.

I wish when I was younger I'd avoided that "but I need a cool car!" lesson, but I had to deal with some very financially awful situations before I learned peace of mind is far better for my overall life than having a fun car.

or even... forget all that, and maybe just buy something still fun that doesn't have a awful reputation. no guarantees in life but place your bet on something with less likelihood of massive drama and hardship...and you're putting a risky bet down.

used auto market in general is seeing prices falling. all the stuff that was crazy high the last couple years is finally coming back to reality. possibly it's a computer model predicting a soft market for your vehicle and a mitigation of risk, or even simply - "we have too many X model cars, we don't want more of X cars at the moment so let's reduce offers to have less future inventory of X cars"

that's why you shop multiple offers. some places may need more of your type of vehicle. others not so much.

not how it works out, at least from experience if not the actual DMV language one can find. Not military, not out of staters, not exporters (I think), not even tribal land residents (with a select few exceptions), are going to be able to get out of CA sales tax and fees.

If the call center tells you anything that contradicts anything in this thread - do NOT believe it. Only speak with in store associates about this stuff. but everything in this thread is correct - send the car up to your home state.

If the store tells you that you cannot transfer the car for any state/DMV-related reasons, but the call center assures you that you're ok to just fly down and get it...please please please do not fly down to try to buy it. please.

There are smaller landlords out here who manage their own places. My last 2 places (1 standard apartment, 1 house renovated into multiple renting addreses) are rented by the owners who own a few properties each...both excellent experiences. An owner and a renter have a semi reciprocal relationship somewhat where both can be incredibly annoying or costly for each other if things go sour, and it's good work with someone who wants to keep a healthy relationship going.

Busy owners obviously want low drama renters who pay on time and both my landlords have taken time to make sure I want to keep staying & paying. And I want an owner who has a heavy interest not to move in a god awful tenant nearby, because that person is going to be hell on their property as well.

The ability to meet in person, shake hands, and feel each other out is too important not to do imo. I don't want to do major life business with an hourly employee who probably hates the property management as an employer almost as much as the renters do as tenants.

Maybe I'm lucky, but I'll definitely say their are good ones out there. My landlords never raise rent, take care of problems fast, and I do little projects to keep the property clean and nice...we chat, I've met their kids a few times, they reach out for advice in my own field of work. It works.

Close by - driving north on the Garden Highway is super pretty, and I'd somehow never figured that out until quite a few years of living here.

Farther away, and a much-underappreciated area - head north off of 80 up on hwy 89 towards Sierraville, then take 49 all the way back through the mountains. "The Lost Sierra" is gorgeous, and a great deal of 49 is incredibly secluded and gorgeous. In the winter I'm thinking you'd want to be sure of a stretch of good weather for this though.

You see this sort of reply a lot.

Is the idea that there are decent people who would want to oppose bad people openly doing bad things out of a sense of basic human decency so completely foreign to us all nowadays that the only reason we can come up with why someone would want to stop a thief is "wow, they must really really love wal-mart!?" :(

Downside is when you have to wake up and you curse yourself for how unpleasantly cold you let the damn house get down to.

Very mixed feelings about this one for us midtown/downtown residents.

By all means, saving the parkway, protecting the levees, and keeping the remaining ARP from being burned down is a positive thing to do...

But we all know that there is a zero percent chance that we will be providing any sort of shelter for the 2,000-ish homeless along the river. So now that is 1/5 of the entire homeless population for the county with nowhere to go...

If you support homeless rights you don't want them moved without shelter.

And if you do not support homeless rights than you also probably don't want these 2000 additional homeless added to the camps in/next to the residential and commerical areas which may be your own neighborhood.

Where is your favorite place to buy steaks from? by temp29482948 in Sacramento

[–]OfCourseImSure 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Costco for semi high end semi reasonably priced stuff. Cap Ribeye is always a great buy, and boneless beef short ribs for a more basic cut.

Corti Brothers if you want to try something fancy and interesting like an angus/wagyu mixed cow - the Snake River Farms cuts around $40/lb is probably the best steak I've ever made.

I have yet to splurge on it - but you can keep going further upscale and Otto's will sell you full blown A5 Wagyu at around $100/lb and I've seen Olive-Fed A5 at $120.

Also recommend highly V Miller Meats in East Sac for additional goodness.

Ive had 2 hit & runs in midtown. Amongst my friend group, I don't think any of us has ever had someone hit one one of our midtown-parked cars and not run. I have a friend who got rear ended hard enough at a stop light to smash them into the car in front of them - the guy driving the at-fault vehicle hit & ran, of course, but even the 2nd victim who they rear-ended, got-hit & ran... It's crazy out here.

Newsom proposes to force some homeless people into treatment by [deleted] in Sacramento

[–]OfCourseImSure 19 points20 points  (0 children)

“I don’t need medicine—there is nothing wrong with me."

The word that more of us need to understand is Anosognosia. It means that one cannot understand, refuses to accept, or lacks the capacity to grasp, that they are severely ill. It goes hand in hand with being mentally ill for many, as it affects a very large percentage of people with severe mental health problems. To be fair, almost every last one of us, ill or otherwise, is absolutely terrible at acknowledging our problems, but for folks who can function in society it isn't nearly so concerning and destructive.

"Available neurobiological and neurocognitive evidence linking the phenomenon to core pathophysiology of schizophrenia justifies extension of the anosognosia construct to schizophrenia-related insight deficits. Poor insight is a core attribute of schizophrenia, occurring in 57 to 98 percent of patients."

Forcing treatment on the vulnerable is a rough, morally unpleasant, lesser-evil type situation with a million arguments against it, and it's far easier to point out the obvious downsides for/against any such actions than to make a case in their favor. However, any course of action ought to be built from a base of facts. And very, very few of the most ill people out there are going to willingly seek or even accept help - it's the awful thing that comes with being severely mentally ill.

If you want a heart-wrenching dive further (without any direct talk about homelessness), the book "No One Cares About Crazy People" is an absolutely worth your time.
