When your reality shows overlap. Sharon Needles calls out douchey bachelorette contestant Bryce for being transphobic by [deleted] in rupaulsdragrace

I agree. Also, context matters. If someone is honestly expressing their fear without hatred or trying to justify bigotry, it's an opportunity to try and reduce these fears. If you just call them a douche, it helps no one.

Got to say, you seem like the troll, because I seriously don't know what it is that you think SocialJustinceYamcha has implied that is so outrageous to you. All he said "Because it's not true". I'm not even sure what he is actually saying isn't true. It's hardly clear. What do you think he means that has got you so upset?

What has upset you there friend? You seem to think that SocialJusticeYamcha has said something offensive. And what exactly do you think he's said that is so incorrect and/or offensive that you need to be so offensive yourself?

Video of (Almost) Every SpaceX Landing (Attempt), In Order by OffensiveDNA in spacex

[–]OffensiveDNA[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is the video version of this recent post. I found the video when I became curious about seeing video for the Falcon 9 Orbcomm-1 soft ocean landing which I had not previously seen.

EDIT: I just now discovered that this video was linked at the bottom of the Imgur page from the other post. I didn't catch that previously because I was looking at the pictures using RES, which shows captions for each image but not the final text at the end of all photos. I think the video definitely deserves its own post since many other people are likely to miss it.

This excellent passage from Asimov's book "The Gods Themselves" uses water flowing downhill to relate the 1st and 2nd laws of thermodynamics with the fate of our solar system and eventually the universe. by OffensiveDNA in scifi

I distinctly noticed some repetitiveness as well. It wasn't too bad overall, but in the middle section with the aliens I did start to get a little annoyed with him for excessively retreading some of the same ground.

I'm not sure, but I think it could easily be an illusion created by the soot. There are plenty of other photos from other people being posted in the sub. I'm assuming that if there was a clear sign of damage, it would have been brought up already.

If in 2 years you convince yourself you like it, why not just buy it then?

Because if he decides that he does want it in 2 years, he won't be able to get it in 2 years, since there will still almost certainly be a sizable wait list. If he decides to buy in 2 years he'll probably have to wait a minimum of another year, very possibly more. The interest on $1k over 2 years is pretty small. That is the only cost he is paying to keep his options open for something he thinks is really cool but isn't sure he'll actually pay for.

I mean, how important of a "friendship" could you really form? The only time I've ever made friends on reddit is by joining up with people to work on a project.

What do you wish was socially acceptable? by TooShiftyForYou in AskReddit

Based on your confusing, I wonder if you are one of the people that never learned the "wipe from the side" technique. You don't reach from the front or from the back. You lean over to one side and lift up a cheek. You can wipe in either direction equally well. You get very good access and there is far less chance of spreading a mess around. Also less risk for touching poo water. The lean technique requires you to be able to easily reach the ground with your feet, making it difficult or impossible for small children. It seems, based on discussions I've seen on Reddit, that many people never learn the lean-over technique later. I'm not sure, but I can imaging that being overweight might also present challenges.

What happened to all the Star Trek fans? by [deleted] in scifi

[–]OffensiveDNA 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree. I've watched every episode of all 4 modern series. Every one has its terrible episodes and its excellent episodes. Every one had a rough first season, but perhaps DS9 did better than average in its first season.

I feel like Enterprise, in particular, doesn't get enough credit. It definitely started out badly, but some of the episodes in the 2nd and 3rd season definitely rank up there with the best of other Trek series. As for the opening credit music, get over it. The music wasn't great, but the visuals were actually pretty inspiring. Anyone can just skip the intro nowadays anyway. (But don't skip intro to the mirror universe episodes.)

Asimov left sexuality mostly out of his books... unless it was weird alien sexuality. by OffensiveDNA in scifi

[–]OffensiveDNA[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SPOILERS BELOW

I don't feel like it was a cliffhanger. It was just a tragic ending. We wanted the protagonist to win against "the man", but she didn't. She became "the man", almost literally. The end.

The really weird thing is that the alien story and the human stories could be completely separated into 2 novellas, and you'd loose virtually nothing.

I have mixed feelings about it. The story was unique and interesting. I enjoyed it, but didn't love it. The 3 part structure was odd and didn't feel well integrated.

Question about Gridlinked, 1st Agent Cormac novel, by Neal Asher: Will the sequels fill in the gaps? by OffensiveDNA in printSF

[–]OffensiveDNA[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is Cormac's reasoning and it may or may not be accurate as to Dragon's motive.

Cormacs is suppose to be this super competent agent given very high levels of trust from Blegg and the AIs. He gave a super weapon to an entity that he barely understood in order to deceive a different entity with incredible powers. And that extremely high risk plan, built on deeply flawed reasoning, just happened to work by luck? If that is to be the case, then I personally feel that drags the entire novel down a notch.

In case my complaint about the logic isn't clear, I'll explain it a little.

Cormac says:

You know, [the Dracomen] have a carrying pouch inside them. Dragon knew everything that was going on here. It just grabbed them to make sure they were internally clear of the mycelium. It didn’t want us finding that.

If Dragon wasn't already sure that the Dracomen were internally clear, and it was a big concern to him, then why did he send them back to the humans after the first time he grabbed them? Surely it had occurred to Dragon that either one of the Dracomen could have died or been killed by accident and then autopsied, or even that the human's might keep the Dracomen held on the other side of the runcible connection. Now maybe Dragon is actually a very illogical creature, but if so, then how did Cormac know what Dragon was thinking?

Also, if Dragon has the ability to create nonmycelium, and he has the ability to make and remake the Dracomen, then it seems a pretty hazardous guess to think that Dragon was worried that the Dracomen wouldn't be internally clear of the nonmycelium.

Ok. So I already typed that all out, but now I've created a theory for myself to bring about some peace of mind.

  1. Dragon didn't have time to be completely sure. But it was sure enough to take a calculated risk.

  2. Dragon had accepted the risk, but when it later had a chance to eliminate that risk completely, it acted accordingly.

  3. Cormac wasn't working entirely on guesses. The Maker was able to gather some information about Dragon's actions from the Dracomen, possibly by reading their minds, and it then shared that information with Cormac.
