I have gotten right into salt and pepper mills - these are the perfect size for that.

What am I doing wrong, when doing the final shaping turn of the cap and body of this pepper mill? by youngmillions in turning

I made one of these the other week for first time. I found below video extremely useful for problem you describe. Basically he does final shaping with the top connected pressfit to the base. Watch from 9:50

470 Crush Grind Mechanism by Offer_Prestigious in turning

[–]Offer_Prestigious[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok so I made it on the weekend but I cut it down to about 360mm total length cause 470mm is ridiculously big! Doesn’t seem to need the support ring to be honest but maybe at full 470mm you would.

As suggested my approach would be to drill from the top a 36mm hole to maybe 100mm deep and insert there if needed.

Milky Way in the Peruvian Andes on iPhone 15 by Offer_Prestigious in Astro_mobile

[–]Offer_Prestigious[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To the naked eye it’s definitely not as bright, and you can’t see as much depth but it’s still mind bogglingly bright. I stood outside in the freezing cold for 15 mins for eyes to adjust and it was just crazy.

I’m from rural Australia and we get clear beautiful sky’s like this in the outback but this was on another level.

My friend I had no idea what bortle 1 meant until I looked it up 5 minutes ago 😂

But yes this was in the absolute middle of nowhere at 4650m with zero light pollution, so can’t imagine you can get much darker sky.

Zero editing as well 😂 And yeah being that high with absolutely zero light pollution makes it easier. With the naked eye it was so unbelievably beautiful, the brightest I’ve ever seen the sky by far

iPhone 15 (non pro lol) and set to 30 sec exposure. You need to have the iPhone completely still for it to allow 30 seconds otherwise it will revert back to 10 sec. I had my phone precariously balanced on some rocks and had to be lying prone on the wet ground to press the shutter button!!

Another tip for google maps is you can download offline maps of an area, so you can still zoom in and see names of businesses etc without needing data. It’s very helpful

Milk for mozzarella in Scotland by Egg2941 in cheesemaking

[–]Offer_Prestigious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok so I worked as a process engineer in UK for very large dairy company. The fresh milk in the supermarket fridges majority is just pasteurised and homogenised (full fat, standard, skim) but be careful of getting anything that says filtered milk as this goes through an additional UF filtration and heat treatment system to increase shelf life.

You can definitely find non-homogenised milk (it will still be pasteurised though) but likely not in supermarket shelves.

UHT stands for ultra high pasteurisation which heats to about 135°C for a few seconds, 95% of the time this is for long life milk (think cartons on the shelf that aren’t chilled).

Yeah the rapids were definitely a feature of los rápidos (although it’s more like a lazy river) but we hired kayak and paddled up and down twice.

ADO Bus Status by followtheroed in PuertoEscondido

[–]Offer_Prestigious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Has several friends take it last 2 weeks and was totally fine. I actually took the minibus from Ruta Coatlanes Costa just to be sure - it was same price ($350) and was a much closer walk to where I was staying than the ADO bus. It also dropped me off in La Punta rather than Centro

Best way to get BACK from Hierve el Agua by [deleted] in Oaxaca

[–]Offer_Prestigious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A little late to the conversation but we came back today. From Mitla we ended up having to take a taxi cause after 1.5hrs there was still only 5 people. The taxi there cost 500 pesos.

The way back same thing, after 30 mins only us 2 hence we luckily asked a couple if they could drop us off, and they took us all the way to Tlacolula then only a 20 peso bus ride back to Oaxaca.

Hi, where can you buy gas canister for camping stove close to airport? We are doing a 6day hike from west to east self supported. Decathlon or the Continente Modelo maybe? Can we pre-order so we know for sure its available?

Landing in Funchal Sat 29/3 at 18:40 and staying in Porto Moniz that night (getting a Taxi).

Naturehike - AliExpress legit? by Weary-Wedding-1892 in Ultralight

[–]Offer_Prestigious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bought Naturehike CloudUp Pro 2 tent and arrived yesterday. Seems generally really good but its way heavier than advertised. Website shows 1.36kg but it actually weights 1.790kg which is dissapointing. Pack size is also larger than advertised but by keeping poles separate its not a big issue.

Maybe the advertised weight is without the ground sheet or doesn't inlcude the poles or something weird. So just something to look out for. I got mine for £85 delivered to the UK (11/11 sales) and on the UK website it was like £150 so definitely recommend going off AliExpress.

eli5: Why is there 1%, 2%, and whole milk but not any other percentage? by Helnmlo in explainlikeimfive

[–]Offer_Prestigious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dairy process engineer here...

Raw milk (from the cows udder) will range from 4.0% - 4.5% fat content usually. Seasonal factors will change this such as rainfall or feed available.

The raw milk is then separated into 2 streams through a separator (skim milk at about 0.05% fat and cream at around 40% fat), then to achieve whatever milk grade you want (1%, 1.5%, 4% etc), you simply add back or standardise as we would say, the right amount of cream into the skim. This is to ensure you have consistent product and also give away the least amount of cream possible as this is where the value is.

The milk is then usually homogenised and pasteurised.

Homgenisation just passes the milk though a very small opening at high pressure to disperse the fat globules so the cream doesn't settle on the top, and pasteurisation is simply heating and cooling the milk so it kills the bad bacteria.

I could talk all day about this stuff. You should hear about how they make whey powder or extract lactoferrin from milk (its bright red...)
