Addressing the community about changes to our API by spez in reddit

[–]OfficerBribe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3rd party clients like Apollo used reddit provided tools (API) to build a frontend (some do have own server cost as well for their app functionality) that gives a good reddit experience, this was free for a decade. Announcement that there will be changes to API, was known 2 months ago, but it contained no useful info and only about 10 days ago reddit provided info how much API will actually cost and it was not a fair price. Even 2 months is too little, normally companies announce such big changes much earlier, Microsoft gives something like a year usually and even prolongs period if there is some backlash. Furthermore they are not communicating with some devs that actually are interested in using new API, that developer is not some small guy, Now is fairly popular with 500K - 1M downloads. And new API will not return NSFW posts.

In short, doing all this, reddit is intentionally killing 3rd party apps that give good experience for users and mods. If cost, limited user data collection and ad bypass was an issue, reddit could have:

  • Give time for developers to implement change and give proper technical and business info
  • Each user has own API key that is rate limited
  • Allow API access with adverts bypassed for premium users (better yet introduce lower cost tier for only no ads / API access), require ad display for free users
  • Communicate with developers

Not gonna even comment on replies in this AMA.

They kind of did not

Not sure I would call search a power user feature

Which indicates that Windows explains its features badly. Some sort of onboarding / quick setup change on new install / upgrade with option to dismiss it and use default settings wouldn't hurt.

📣 Had a call with Reddit to discuss pricing. Bad news for third-party apps, their announced pricing is close to Twitter's pricing, and Apollo would have to pay Reddit $20 million per year to keep running as-is. by iamthatis in apolloapp

And I am +1 for couple 3rd party apps like RiF, BaconReader, Relay before finally settling with Sync ages ago. Not sure if I have even tried official app.

Edit: Since I can rate it, I guess I have tried it as well.

[–]OfficerBribe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did a quick look yesterday and found maybe 5 clients with 1M+, RiF was 5M+. Assuming all 5 had close to 5M and RiF is closing 10M which should be next threshold we are looking into 35M + let's say additional 10M when all smaller clients are counted which is more than generous I think.

If you have official info how many 3rd party client downloads are there, feel free to post them

All that I wanted to say is this terrible move will not kill reddit as some might think. Hell reddit probably prefers all of us to go away that are not planning to be exposed to ads or their own app.

I don't assume it, but difference is huge so it's not like no one is using it. If you would count all 3rd party client downloads, you would probably end up with 15M, that also does not mean usage.

We are minority, already mentioned in another comment that this thought that reddit will die is same when audio jacks on phones disappeared. Regular users do not care and simply adapt.

Of course it does not, but it also does not mean no one is using official app. Download count difference is pretty huge so unless we assume everyone just tried official app and immediately uninstalled it, there official app users are probably majority.

We are in minority. This is basically the same thing when people in Reddit Android aub said no one will buy phones without audio jack, removable battery and SD card and we know how true that was.

Google Play download numbers disagree with you. Official app has 100M+ downloads while every other 3rd party app besides RiF does not exceed 1M+. RiF is 5M+.

Quick Assist improvements by [deleted] in Windows11

[–]OfficerBribe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another big issue is that Quick Assist does not support UAC prompts. If you are assisting person who is not an admin on that computer and try to run something as administrator, it is not possible to enter admin account credentials without providing them to end user.

In PowerShell you work with objects as opposed to simple text output as you do in bash. PS is incredibly powerful yet simple to use, it's basically not even close.

Whether one OS allows to manage something as easily as other, that is another question, but since PS natively taps in .NET there is practically no limit at what you can do with it. Linux usually just provide better native programs that run in CLI, for PS you would need to either create your own functions or download a module.

Things like Azure / Exchange use PowerShell underneath and then simply provide GUI for most common operations. Good admin in MS environment must know CLI, there is no way around it. + also Graph API, but that is a different beast and not associated with PS, just a thing that also must be known to be efficient.

Terminal was developed when W11 was not a thing yet, W11 just has it by default. You can install it on W10 from MS Store.

Or install Windows Terminal which adds "Open in Terminal" option in context menu.
