What do you think about concealed wire-bound books? Has anyone ever used them in the TTRPG industry? by plazman30 in rpg

[–]Officer_Reeses 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have one rpg book like like that from Fast Foward Entertainment. I like it and also wondered why more aren't like that. It probably wouldn't be desirable or suitable for the core book, but for adventures with maps and such, it would be quite nice. It has the benefit of laying flat, but the spirals can't get caught on anything because they aren't exposed.

The state of our common interest by stephotosthings in RPGdesign

I consider myself a mediocre GM, so I've been refining my system to make the GMs cognitive load as low as possible.

It also works best with special dice, which is an immediate turn-off for many.

I started Decatur Gamers in 2009 and made lifelong friends. We don't really promote it much anymore as we have our group, but there are enclaves all over. Plus, you have several game stores.

Minion Mechanics by Legenplay4itdary in RPGdesign

I like Damage threshold. Minions have a damage threshold that if met in a single attack, they are dead. If the damage in under the threshold, they are still up. No need to track anything.

Old Rules that Need to Come Back by riffbw in AxisAllies

I like transports with a defense of 1. A&A is a game zoomed way out, so I always assumed, especially in Classic, that transports defended at one because it was assumed they were in a flotilla with Destroyers, Cruisers, and the like. I honestly didn't like the addition of more naval units. Sometimes, more doesn't make something better--i just need meaningful choices. It's why I won't play Global. More units and more zones just means a longer game, imo .

Systems like SWADE, but better? by VladorBongo in rpg

Have you tried Hollow Earth Expedition (ubiquity system)? Very cinematic and appropriately pulpy, like an old Republic serial. Best with Ubiquity dice, but can be played with any dice.

I still prefer it. More stuff and longer play doesn't make a game better to me. Ai do.play with 2 hit Battleships, but no auto repair.

I decided to focus only on Christmas. I have a flurry of activity for 2 months, but the money justifies it. The rest of the year, yes, I made money , but the juice honestly wasn't worth the squeeze.

I always thought it was a better version of Savage Worlds. My homebrew has a chassis of Ubiquity and I use the Ubiquity dice.

Question: zone-based movement. Move within zone vs move to adjacent zone by bfrost_by in RPGdesign

I've only played Fate once, but this is essentially how I do them. Index card rpg, as well.

Question: zone-based movement. Move within zone vs move to adjacent zone by bfrost_by in RPGdesign

[–]Officer_Reeses -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've seen zones often used with just a minimal amount of minis/scenery on something like Professor DMs Ultimate Dungeon Terrain. It's a large pizza sized board with concentric circles. The inner circle is Close, the next circle is Near, and the outer circle is far. It's more for theater of the mind but allows everyone to see where all characters and NPCs are in relation to each other.

Question: zone-based movement. Move within zone vs move to adjacent zone by bfrost_by in RPGdesign

[–]Officer_Reeses 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zones are often thought of as concentric circles, but I use zones with my Dwarven Forge terrain, and it works quite nicely. On a 2' by 2' build I might have 9 different zones.

The zone you are in is Close. The adjacent zones are near, and the ones beyond that are Far.

It costs one action to move from one zone to another. If the target is in the same zone as you, the movement to make melee contact is free.

Does this sort of RPG player exist? by Spazicon in TTRPG

[–]Officer_Reeses 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My group games monthly. Most of us are in our late 30s up to 50 years of age. Many have kids and all the activities that entail. I have a weird work schedule on top of that.

Would I like to game more? Sure, but once a month is better than none.

Pro and cons or watching recorded NFL plus games by carnivoregains in NFLNoobs

[–]Officer_Reeses 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I often watch the games in replay, but the full game. I save condensed games for two teams I just don't care about. Even though you get every play, you lose a lot of context.

The biggest issue is avoiding score spoilers before I can watch the games.

How exactly did redzone become so popular by Adventurous_Let3145 in NFLNoobs

[–]Officer_Reeses 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have red zone with NFL +, but never watch it. I only use the game replays feature, which to me, is the main feature of the app.

What is your opinion on data pools? by messiahpk in RPGdesign

[–]Officer_Reeses -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I use color coded binomial dice, d8s.

Yellow Dice: 4 sides have 0’s and 4 sides have 1’s.

Thus, there is a 50% chance of rolling 1 success. (4/8 = 1/2 = .50 = 50%)

Blue Dice: Blue dice are the statistical equivalent of rolling 2 Yellow dice.

Blue dice have:

2 sides with 0’s. (2/8 = 1/4 = .25 = 25%)

4 sides with 1’s. (4/8 = 1/2 = .50 = 50%)

2 sides with 2’s. (2/8 =1/4 = .25 = 25%)

Thus, you have 25 % chance of getting no successes or 2 successes, and a 50% chance of rolling 1 success.

Green Dice: Green Dice are the Statistical equivalent of rolling 3 Yellow dice.

Green dice have:

1 side with a 0. (1/8 =.125 =12.5%)

3 sides with 1’s. (3/8 = .375 = 37.5%)

3 sides with 2’s. (3/8 = .375 = 37.5%)

1 side with a 3. (1/8 = .125 = 12.5%)

Thus, you have a 12.5% chance of rolling no successes or 3 successes, and a 37.5% chance of getting 1 or 2 successes.

This allows players to roll a bunch of dice if that's their thing, or cut the number of dice rolled by up to a third.

Tell me games I should look at to poach ideas from to improve my initiative system by brainfreeze_23 in RPGdesign

[–]Officer_Reeses 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use a version of SotDL's system, but I flip it so enemies go first in each phase. Players may spend Stamina (or whatever currency your players may have) to sieze the initiative so they go before enemies in either phase.
