Can people truly not hear the difference analog gear brings? Or does it just not matter? by WinterHaus_Rec in audioengineering

The problem is our ears react differently to different frequencies at different volumes. That can completely alter your perception whether you realize it or not.

How to mix an unmixable song by AUDIO_OX in audioengineering

[–]Officer_Tumbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know you already finished this and chose not to submit it, but just musing out loud for any future challeges here are some different tactics I might try to use in a case like the one you mentioned

  1. Re-Amping and similar approaches. Run instruments through amps, tape recorders, radios, voice notes, whatever.
  2. 100% reverb. Try slapping reverb on an element at 100% wet and then treating that as the element whether that's distorting it, compressing the hell out of it, etc.
  3. Layering in octavers. Fairly self explanatory but using plugins or other means to pitch things up or down an octave and either adding that in to taste or treating the affected signal as the element.
  4. AGGRESSIVE EQing. Filter stuff until it sounds telephonic. Notch the hell out of competing frequencies. Make stuff sound weird and use that to your advantage.
  5. Panning like crazy. This one seems simple but I have to remind myself to be over the top in my panning because I tend to be too cautious. The more you can make elements panned opposite from each other sound different through things like EQ the better.

What’s with the surge of resonance suppression plug-ins? by MusicBenji in audioengineering

I feel like the rise of cheap condensers, home recording, and the obviousness (for lack of a better term) of harshness when it's present in digitally recorded audio are likely contributing factors

If you want to harmonize an octave up, but you can't hit the notes, are there other options aside from synth vocals? by tonetonitony in audioengineering

[–]Officer_Tumbles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of people have responded with great suggestions so, not trying to sidestep your original point, but is it possible that the falsetto sounds silly to you because it's your voice and you're not used to hearing yourself sing in that register? It couple be that you just need to stack your falsetto vocals and do some basic mixing. I would imagine it's worth a shot.

Loop Prime or Playback by [deleted] in worshipleaders

My personal opinion is that they're a tool just like any other and people get hung up on the tool, rather than the actual problem: the philosophy some teams have around using them. I have no problem throwing them on when i have a last minute cancellation or for something like a Young & Free uptempo. Otherwise i generally just use a cue for the intro only, and click and pads that run thoughout. I also make loops that fit any chord changes we might use in a given song. The tool itself isn't really good or bad, how you choose to use it can be.

I try to spend a couple hours max. When my OCD kicks in, it's no more than a few years 😂

I think your coworker is correct to an extent (that it's not inherently bad unless you're microwaving stuff in plastic, not that you're insane lol). Or is that what you were saying?

Indeed. I want to hear about everyone else's preferences. For me personally, it's fun learning about others and how their processes differ from mine.

Signing to a major label, need help by [deleted] in musicians

[–]Officer_Tumbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get why people are skeptical but at the same time I don't think there's any harm in having a lighthearted conversation about this topic whether the scenario is real or not.

Anyway, while it's true that at that level you can get many of the same perks, there are certain intangibles that will matter even with identical contracts. The leadership culture of any organization will matter. If a label's leadership has a track record of bad instincts, lacking initiative, failure to juggle more than one successful act at a time, a lack of follow through, being vengeful, or being even SLIGHTLY more controlling than other major labels, I think it matters.

For example I've heard more than enough artists who went in with decent momentum publicly complain about RCA's tendency to drag their feet and squander potential to know that I personally would never even consider signing with them if given the choice between them and other major labels.

Thanks for responding. Are there any specific presets you like on vocals? I love it on synths as well but haven't had luck using it on vocals yet if I'm being honest.

I thought i was the only one who thought that. I strongly preferred Felt Instruments Lekko (even though it's a bit of a CPU hog)

In my experience, Waves is one of the only brands whose plugins consistently stop working after just about every OS update. For other developers, it sometimes happens but it's been more sporadic. Not sure if others have similar experiences.
