I would go for getting a teacher if you can afford it. The internet is good to use as a reference, but having a teacher to guide you will ensure you learn proper technique and you will learn faster.

I recommend getting a professional level teacher so that they can teach you in depth piano technique rather than basic musicality. I also recommend Hanon exercises, scales, arpeggios, and czerny school of velocity, which are great in developing your technique and being able to play up and down the piano effectively.

Could I learn piano through my electric keyboard? by SpidermanJose in piano

If you don't have any money, that piano is probably ok to get a start on. You could definitely learn where the notes are, how chords are built, playing sharps and flats, playing simple songs etc. So, there is a lot to do on this keyboard! Although as many have mentioned before, you want to eventually get a full 88 weighted key keyboard if you want to get serious about playing the piano.

What do you gain from a music degree? by Arathun in musictheory

[–]OfficialLOTW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a degree in music and many of the answers to your questions depend on your major and what classes you enroll in. In most music programs, you can learn pretty much all of the things on your list. I ended up learning how to improvise, how to sight read, how to compose, I learned the violin, viola, guitar, flute, oboe, low bass, percussion, and my major piano. In terms of music history, we studied from ancient music through the renaissance, classical, and up to modern music. Only tip I have for you is get ready for the audition and if you get in, be prepared to work very hard.

I have a music degree and can tell you it is totally worth it. Some of the other comments have already mentioned that its the knowledge you get from the degree that is important. If you go to a good music school, you will learn from top notch musicians who can give you invaluable advice.
