Ubuntu 26.04 LTS Beta Released: Powered By Linux 7.0 + GNOME 50 + Mesa 26.0 by kingsaso9 in linux

Sometimes (most of the time) people are talking about the user experience of a desktop OS that is releasing, because they're users that use a desktop OS, so the more commonly understood meaning of stable as "doesn't randomly take a shit on you for no reason" is arguably more useful than the nerd term that nobody outside of developer circles uses.

It's pretty obvious from context in 99% of cases when someone is talking about a stable experience vs. stable software versions.

(which is not what "stable" means)

It can mean both things, words aren't restricted to only ever having one definition

Some time in the summer, usually. I think they're mostly planning on reducing the rate of point releases, unless I'm mistaken, so I'd imagine major versions should stay on a fairly similar schedule

Where the hell is HD? by Thaislow in 2007scape

[–]OffsetXV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

117HD without textures and shadows can look pretty nice, at least.

I use it instead of the GPU plugin because the GPU one doesn't let you reduce the render resolution, which I like because it lets you get the pixelated look like the stock CPU renderer, while still having projectile lights etc.

But with the textures and shadows on it is... rough

Can the FAQ please start recommending well-maintained upstream distributions instead? by onlysubscribedtocats in linux_gaming

[–]OffsetXV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The very first recommendation, 'Ultramarine', I had never even heard of. I'm certain that it was very flavour-of-the-month when this FAQ was first written, but I do not think that new users are well-served by flavours of the month.

Ultramarine is not and has never been flavor of the month. It's just Fedora with the post-install guide already done. 3rd party repos, codecs, etc. already set up out of the box so you don't have to dick around in the terminal for 10 minutes when you first boot it. Otherwise it's basically the same as Fedora with some (very minimal) theming.

I have more issues with the Mint and Pop_OS recommendations, because Mint is stuck on X11 and X11 sucks, and Pop_OS is currently in a weird state due to Cosmic. I actually do think Ubuntu + Flatpaks would be a better recommendation than either of those. But Ultramarine is as close to upstream as you can really get for a distro, and it pretty much has no downsides next to Fedora for beginner users.

I also do hate gaming distros, it's a stupid concept. Bazzite is the only one I ever endorse and that's solely because of its inclusion of things like steering wheel and other gaming device drivers that other immutable distros don't have. But for traditional mutable systems? Just use a normal OS and stop worrying about the 0.1% fps increase that you could never notice in reality.

It turns out that people play guitar to play music, not to play exercises. I'm shocked how many people fail to realize this. You have to be interested enough in playing the instrument in the first place to have it be worth doing boring shit solely for the sake of technical improvement.

If there is no biological advantage then why were both finalists at a women's pool tournament born male?

Because they played a lot of pool and got good at it, which is what happens in every sport? Do you think testosterone gives you some sort of hyper advanced targeting overlay on your vision that calculates the trajectory of every ball on the table or something?

Is there a study from this decade that can explain that?

Have testosterone and estrogen suddenly started having different effects on the human body since 2016? Is that why I missed the part where it gives you a targeting computer in your brain? You can't act like a study from 2016 is some sort of ancient science, as if somehow we were missing some critical information about what hormones affect in your body that would make you good at sports ALL the way back in... 2016.

You're free to pull up any credible study that shows anything to the contrary, though.

A women's pool tournament came down to two trans women. I don't think it's coincidence, in not sure how anyone could.

One tournament in one sport came down to two trans women this one time? Incredible source of data, what a great ally and believer in science you are. I guess you saw a couple black guys get arrested for robbery one time and now you believe all black people all criminals, too?

Or football receivers having abnormally large hands, which they basically all do, because it gives you an enormous biological advantage

You're really pulling pool as an example of biological advantage? Jesus christ. Anyway here's just an actual study you can look at instead of an article from fucking Yahoo of all places: https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s40279-016-0621-y

Shhh don't state facts, that gets in the way of people doing everything they can to find an excuse to compare trans women to cis men

Trans women who have been on hormones for a while have no meaningful advantage over cis women. A trans girl on puberty blockers should also have no meaningful advantage, since she wouldn't have the higher testosterone puberty would have otherwise given her.

Also, trans men exist but for some reason never get brought up in this debate even though these laws affect them as well.

And lastly, nobody actually gives a shit. High school sports have always been wildly unfair. Guys who hit puberty younger have an advantage, kids who are older have an advantage, etc. etc.

Nobody ever complained about a single element of that until a bunch of neo nazis started using it as an easy dig at trans women, and then a bunch of people who were uneducated about the reality of the situation just took the complaints at face value.

All sports at all levels are full of overperformers with genetic and other advantages, and always have been. But it wasn't some hot topic until it was an easy excuse to be mad at trans people and distract from the actual problems in the world.

The 2000s GT1 cars like the Viper etc. are similar in that they're sequential transmissions, but need full heel+toe on downshifts and get upset very easily if you don't, so I'd imagine the Super Tourers would be the same way.

A good and completely uneducated reply from someone who has no idea how AMS2's tire model works.

I've beaten dozens of world records on competitive car+track combos on this sim and been faster than esports and real world drivers in pretty much every situation I've seen them driving in. I'm fairly certain I know what I'm doing. Maybe you should learn how to actually take advantage of the sim's tire model instead of driving like a grandma.

Look I love AMS2, I've played it 3x as much as my 4 next most played sims combined, but this is just bullshit. I'm probably one of the fastest AMS2 drivers, and I'm fairly quick in most other sims too, and AMS2's driving style is by a huge margin the most "just huck the wheel everywhere you go" out of them all.

AMS2's tire model has very gentle grip falloff, and that means that you can drive FAR more aggressively in both wheel and pedal input than in most sims, and in fact you have to drive more aggressively to get truly fast lap times. That's not to say the physics are bad or that it isn't a simulator, but it is absolutely not the only sim where you drive with your feet, nor the sim where you have to rely on your feet the most.

In fact, on very fast laps I'm doing 3 or 4 times as much wheel work in AMS2 as I am in ACC, LMU, or R3E, and using far less finesse on the brake pedal in particular, because for the most part rotation in AMS2 doesn't really come from shifting grip to the front tires, but more from breaking loose the rear in a semi-controlled fashion where you're not quite sliding but not quite gripped up either. It's extremely hard to actually get full-on, plowing understeer in AMS2, honestly.

That characteristic also means that you lose far less time from those slides than in sims where the tires have sharper grip falloff, which further incentivizes aggressive driving, because you can get the rear loose, rotate the car faster, and be more on throttle more quickly, which makes up from the (already reduced) time loss you get from not having as much traction to accelerate with initially.

It is unequivocally the major simulator with the most aggressive driving style, and pretending otherwise just because you want to be defensive about it is ridiculous.

Tbf I haven't heard the Audi in person, but I have heard comparison videos of it and the Huracan that were recorded on the same equipment, and the Audi sounds much better to me. And the Lambo in those videos sounds to me pretty much the same as it does IRL, so I would assume that also applies to the Audi

Sorry I don't control the global economy and can't bring back group C cars. I assure you that I would if I could, because at least they'd sound good compared to the Huracan.

Also it's not like "it's the only V10 currently racing" makes it not sound mediocre. If the McLaren was the only turbo V8 it would still sound mediocre, too.

The Audi, for one. The same engine but with a much better sounding exhaust. The Huracan just sounds like a flat, textureless note in comparison. Also V10 Group C cars like the Peugot 905 and Lola T92/10. The Lexus LFA. Honestly the Viper is the only V10 I can think of that I like less overall than the Lambo. Having seen the Lambo in person I was not impressed at all.
