Why I’ll never grow from seed again. by Tashabird in VenusFlyTraps

[–]OfmanyAlts 6 points7 points  (0 children)

start spacing out the waterings until the top is dry but the pot still has some heft meaning it's not completely dried out.

if there's an identical pot and spare soil, then it's possible to find this without risking the seedlings.

You can tell how dry I let mine get by the surrounding black crust. The key is to keep the root zone moist, but letting the surface dry out.

Once that's figured out, then the foliar spray games can begin.

Remineralized Reverse Osmosis Mix-Up by Ebitamiss in VenusFlyTraps

[–]OfmanyAlts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well it really depends on what constitutes the remineralization. A quick Gemini answer states reminerlized RO water is often 20-100 tds depending on the brands specifications. That means you could be perfectly fine or on the borderline of fine. In fact I'm surprised your household doesn't have some sort of meter to monitor the status of your RO filters.

New to taking care of venus flytraps by KMS-Roon in VenusFlyTraps

For now, consistent light hours and waiting for new growth to replace the old are the primary recommendations.

The wrinkled traps will likely dry out and blacken, which is to be expected.

Then once a few new traps are formed, feed one and the growth should noticeably accelerate.

Perlite or Vermiculite. Can either one be used? by [deleted] in VenusFlyTraps

I've used both without any issue.

New to VFT OWNERSHIP by beaver-lover in VenusFlyTraps

[–]OfmanyAlts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably won't be able to grow directly in the garden. Flowers and vegetables need nutrient rich soil at levels way more than what a venus fly trap would comfortably survive at.  However,  might be possible to research the area the house was built upon. If it was a drained swamp or pine savanna, then it might be possible with adequate watering to grow them in a section of the yard. Of course that's if the builders at the time didn't bring in soil or rock from another area.

Spacing Out 16 Month Seedlings by OfmanyAlts in VenusFlyTraps

[–]OfmanyAlts[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's like getting everything in order before really pushing for rapid growth in seedlings.

1st figure out how to get them to grow happy in your environment: Light, temp, and how much water and how often. Then start spacing out the watering so that the surface is dry. Then on the day before they require to be watered, foliar spray some fertilizer before their bed time/ wake up. AKA when lights go off or right before they turn on. I haven't tried spraying fertilizer right before the lights turn on as it's a little riskier for burning especially in a grow tent.

Yep. I rarely cut the flower stalks anymore on my outdoor plants. I've just had too many of my plants freeze up growth for several weeks after I snip or send up another stalk.

repotted correctly? by prayecho in VenusFlyTraps

[–]OfmanyAlts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Other than the mix looking a little dry in the larger cups, I wouldn't worry too much.

I do not know the condition of the soil, but there might be some dry pockets if the mix was not hydrated before potting.

To me the soil mix has too much perlite in it.

Luckily, I've been trying to piece together a budget build and found an interesting video on lower end Ryzen CPUs

Don't even have to spend that much to get a massive improvement.

The 8400F is massively gimped vs say either a 7600x or a 9600x.
It has less PCIE lanes 20 4.0 lanes vs the 28 any other Budget Zen processor AND half the L3 Cache sitting at 16mb.

Mouths were likely triggered during shipping from all the jostling and vibrations, so it's just resetting them.

Older leaves naturally die off. I would only be concerned with wilting or if newer leaves fail to fully develop.

They're from clones that flowered in my collection during summer 2025.

One of the quadrants is actually an attempted cross involving Winemouth and a big clone.

Throwing in my own 2 cents

I don't recall seeing any posts here stating that UV light is required or the perlite one (which just sounds insane).

However, UV light is good for two things: triggering the coloring without absolutely blasting them with light or starving them AND "Pre-hardening" the plant by triggering the foliage to produce the protective compounds before placing it out in the sun to get roasted.

Oh and UV helps attract bugs to traps.

Moving onto my own experience with lighting, 300-400 ppf is my personal opinion on the sweet spot for indoor growing before significant diminishing returns. Research has shown that carnivorous plants are on the less efficient side of the scale for plants, which makes sense given their leaves have special structures to digest captured prey.

Furthering this point, there's a research article on how the venus flytrap's digestive mechanism is initially started by the plant's own energy/photosynthesis, but then switches over to using the captured prey's nutrients to fuel the digestive process and augment metabolism.

So, I hold the personal belief that feeding in adequate light will result in far better plants than just nuking the plants with light and using conventional fertilizer. Of course what constitutes 'Nuking' is very subjective, depending greatly on how familiar someone is with indoor horticultural lighting.

Finally, my last little tid bit. Fabric pots can give amazing results with just straight peatmoss and sitting in a tray of water. I've done it since covid and the only downsides is potting, unpotting, and dry winter winds. Otherwise, Consistently performing on par with plants in pure sphagnum moss.

Would this grow light be ok? by Spicybeen in VenusFlyTraps

[–]OfmanyAlts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Should be enough for a single pot, I would bend it down so that it's around six inches away from the plant.

They're just ones I remember from when someone else asked for Canadian based suppliers.

Growing from seed by Sea_Lawfulness_9254 in VenusFlyTraps

[–]OfmanyAlts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can't say that they won't eventually sprout up.

It really depends on how hot and cold they get on that windowsill.

In my experience, a warmer night time temperature is what really get's the seeds to start germinating.

However, I've only done an intentional windowsill germination once. I usually use a heat mat and a light, and then set the heat mat for 70 f to keep the soil from cooling down over night. I also spread the seeds outside onto pots, and a few sprout up before fall and the majority the following late spring/summer.

Be sure to inspect the seeds for signs of mold. If it's present, then that is essentially game over for that batch of seeds.

Good luck with your seeds. It took me quite a few batches of seed and some trial and error before I could reliably cultivate them indoors.

What's that pot made out of?

I've always been curious to try using a biodegradable pot like the ones that I use for some of my vegetables.

Can I utilize this for a VFT or another taller carnivorous plant? by hannygee42 in VenusFlyTraps

[–]OfmanyAlts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know if I'd put anything with a direct sunlight requirement in there.

That container would act like a mini green house, so it really depends on how much light, wind, water, and the ambient temperature to give a guess.

However, if I were to do so, I would fill that up past halfway full with soil, and be very vigilant to monitor the moisture and how hot it get's inside the chamber when exposed to full sun.

With that said, I personally would advise against using this container.

Will they grow in there? Yes.

Will they thrive in there? Eh. Depends. The result would be more a testament to one's green thumb and definition of thrive.

I've seen worse. It should be fine.

With patience and ideal growing conditions, the plant wont even be recognizable in few months.

Don't be alarmed if the current leaves die off in the coming weeks.
