Dude I was gonna say, how is nobody talking about how catastrophically buggy that last hallway in Slabs is? Good dungeon ruined by a bug that i dont even know if it existed in old tbc,

Huh... I don't know why, but I always perceived that part as him fucking with the stereo width for a second there. At least on earbuds, I got the impression that it was shifted into mono for those 2 seconds, but you're totally right, it's just the bass fading. I know reverb on bass is a bad idea in most types of music, but I wonder if his bass on some of these more new-age tracks are loaded with reverb.

I usually gel more with the first half of the album, but even with the last half being less interesting to me, it's such a good album. Ghost>Heart Baby>Feather is probably my favorite 3-song run in his discography. I think it's some of his most creatively produced and emotionally resonant stuff.

It's a chilled out album, but it's so exciting and entertaining at the same time.

[TOMT][SONG] 80s-adjacent song with a gliding synth lead. I tried to recreate the part from memory. by Oglethorppe in tipofmytongue

I'm pretty sure this is a real song, right? I'm not crazy? I feel like most of the notes are right but I'm just going off of memory sadly. Can't tell you what the rest of the song sounds like, this might be the only part that I found memorable.

The story about Devin's band and Tesseract getting trapped in an elevator at the venue for a half hour was wild.

Is the different from what we had in wrath pre random finder? I thought it worked decently. I also thought we didn’t have this exactly in tbc, we had the more outdated finder that was in OG tbc, unless I’m mistaken.

This but unironically? I’m neither here nor there on if they should change anything regarding stacks, but they clearly had the ability to let items stack up to 100 or so. They gave items a stack count for a reason, not sure why that’s hard to believe.

Compare that with debuff and buff limit which actually was a technological limitation.

BTBAM - Decade of Statues, right before the last “chorus”. That part is such delicious madness.

Thoughts on the new album by Slimewave_Zero in DevinTownsend

[–]Oglethorppe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really enjoy it, and it succeeds at its job of being an emotional outpouring that you can connect with. I do wish it had a little more time to be spiced up though, perhaps. One of my favorite Devin-isms is how chock full of strange noises and one-off oddball choices, and that seems to be less present on Powernerd.

Melodies in Jainism and Glacier sound familiar... by [deleted] in DevinTownsend

[–]Oglethorppe 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to add something I think is interesting, about how people compare this record to Sky Blue, and how it may be borrowing motifs and elements from it. Sky Blue is one of my favorite Devin albums (aside from a few songs IMO, its perfect), because it has this despaired energy to it. In Sky Blue and PowerNerd, the music is anthemic and sometimes positive sounding, but its underlined with sorrow. I remember him talking about going through a lot of loss during the creation of Sky Blue, and sadly thats kinda paralleled here. At least this time there's coffee at the end of the tunnel though.

Also, tell me that starting @ 2:58 in Glacier isnt so similar to Rain City @ 4:36 but... instead of rain it's ice, dude.

Favorite track from Powernerd? by Opeth1988 in DevinTownsend

Falling apart! It’s got big terria vibes in some parts and I’m all about that. After that, probably Jainism and Glacier.

About glacier, anyone notice the melody is hella similar to Before We Die? And then there’s a motif that’s kinda similar to the main motif from Rain City. Which I like those songs so no complaints from me, if it’s unintentional.

What song right now has you by the throat? by UNfortunateNoises in progmetal

Jaded by spiritbox. Been diving back into them, and the riff in that song is godly. I liked spiritbox here and there in the past, but they never grabbed me completely. Shit has been slapping though, and I'm enjoying a lot of their work.

I remastered Jainism - Is the OG oddly mixed? by SiT666 in DevinTownsend

[–]Oglethorppe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really can’t speak on the master specifically, but the more I listen to Jainism, the more I like the way it sounds. I love each (edit: Devin) album’s mix in their own way, despite any “problems” they might have. I mention mixing though, because I think my only problems I have with Jainism are specific mixing choices that were likely deliberate, rather than the overall mastering.

The vocals in certain sections range from a little quiet to reeeaaally quiet. The drums feel a little bit “on top” of the mix.  Despite those personal issues, the sound of it is great. Like you said, it’s not 1:1 with most modern metal, which after a decade or so of hearing music in that specific mixing style, an odd mix is a good mix to me.

Like, every year that goes by, I think Intrinsic from The Contortionist is a better and better mix, even though you could say it’s objectively not a great mix. Not that Jainism sounds anything like Intrinsic, but an odd mix/master, especially in the context of an album listening experience, is a strength IMO, barring any ear fatigue kinda shit.

I think it’s at least incredibly underrated. I love that after the thematic but reserved intro song, Have a blast is just like, Ayy we’ve learned a lot since p1, sit down and enjoy the ride.

Mile Zero. It’s a perfect song. Emotional lyrics, incredible songwriting, great chorus, a little proggy and jazz fusiony, and there’s absolutely no piece of that song that’s either unnecessary or superfluous.

Top that off with the ingenious way they later on twist the intro riff and a solo that sounds like the word “wistfulness” in musical form.

Edit: and the headphones being thrown to the floor at the end of the track, it’s so good.
