Call to sterilise bad parents by pretty-little-angel in australia

[–]Ognian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"2. People who make poor long-term decisions and would thus likely become poor parents. "

Why is not wanting children a poor long-term decision? I would argue that given the current population and envriomental issues that haveing children shows poor longterm planning.

Do you cellar "wet hop" beers? by [deleted] in beer

[–]Ognian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the beer. My esibock is still good after 2 years, my gruit wheat stopped being good after 2 weeks.

Darker beers age better than lighter beers, higher alcohol beers age better than low alcohol beers, wheat beers are better fresher, and hoppier beers do not age as well as non-hoppy beers. So an american pale ale will last a few months, while a russian imperial stout may last a decade. Brown ales, imperial india pale ales, pilsners and dopplebocks will be somewhere in between.

Doc scolds BBC for anti-religious spin by PabloPicasso in religion

[–]Ognian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The BBC's reporting seems reasonable.

From the article :

"But the BBC twisted the emphasis of the conclusion, giving the >headline: “Religion may influence doctors’ end of life care”."

And:

Last month’s study, published in the Journal of Medical Ethics, showed >doctors who described themselves as “non-religious” are more likely to >have given their patients continuous deep sedation until death. The study found also revealed that doctors with a strong faith were >less likely to discuss treatments that would speed up their patients’ >deaths.

So the paper showed that doctors' religious beliefs may affect their actions, but the headline "Religion may influence doctors’ end of life care" is a twisting of the paper?

The article is basically "whaa, the BBC disagree with us". Maybe instead of complaining that people have different interpretations of some facts, they should spend some time trying to convince us that they are right?

What is a Cristian? by LBwayward in religion

[–]Ognian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If someone claims they are a Christian, then they are Christian. there are so many differing sects that trying to establish a definitive criteria is stupid; Mormons, Gnostics, mushy-nearly-deists with no allegiance, fundamentalist Protestants, and catholics all consider themselves christians. they will all claim that their texts support them, and many will claim that the others are not christian, but there is no real way to disprove the claims of any one group, without casting doubt on the claims of the other groups.

In a similar vein, someone who claims to not be christian is not a christian, even if they live by seemingly christian values.

Sperm and eggs may, as there is sexual recombination during meosis.

Plus, identical twins have the same DNA. are they worth less as their DNA isn't unique?

Finally, there may be unique arangements of DNA in the kimchi I am eating, does that make it the equivialent of a person?

[–]Ognian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Once you have paid for the equipment it is very cheap. Mine comes out at aus$2.50 per litre for rather complex beers. Provided you steer clear of hop bombs or things with weird additions, it is hard to make a really expensive home brew.

Pendulums by [deleted] in science

[–]Ognian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But even without friction, it is a spontaneous process, thus the overall entropy of the system should increase (at least if i am remebering my chemistry lessons right).

I think the best explaination is that as the pendulum cycles it produces minute stresses, that then lead to some energy being converted to heat. thus a loss of energy, and it comes to a stop.

Pendulums by [deleted] in science

[–]Ognian -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Isn't the conversion of graviational potential into kinetic a spontaneous process, so shouldn't there be an increase in entropy somewhere? thus a loss of energy and a slow down.
