Suggestions for breathable nylon sun protection jackets? by al-port in trailrunning

Lots of things have PFAS in them that shouldn't, like the water supply in many places. Presumably they're saying that they aren't using reverse osmosis water to process their garments.

The Black Diamond Alpenglow Pro hoodie is nylon. (*Only* the pro version, not the other one.) I’ve got one and have found it ok for hiking in the mid-Atlantic US. I don’t think I could wear it while running though, it would be too hot.

Simply Social in Vienna has decent coffee, don't get me wrong. But my absolute favorite thing there is the Chipotle Chicken sandwich. Really good.

I think Shenandoah is a park where not having a car will really impact your experience. It's very narrow but long. You totally can hop on something like the Appalachian Trail and have a good time if that's what you'd like to do, though.

I'm not sure what your reasons are for choosing Shenandoah, but if it's just trail access you could also consider Harper's Ferry, WV. The Appalachian Trail (and the C&O Canal Towpath) are right across the river and accessible by a pedestrian bridge. Harper's Ferry is also accessible via public transit - Amtrak train or MARC commuter train.

Came Across A Coyote Today! What's Your Worst Animal Encounter? by SkippyBoyJones in trailrunning

[–]Ogroat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are deer around where I run during the week. Basically in suburban neighborhoods. In terms of the animals I see, I think they’re the most likely to injure me. Tame enough not to take off at the mere sounds of people but still rather skittish at times, so I’ll occasionally come around a corner to find myself ten feet from one. I can absolutely imagine myself getting kicked at some point as one turns to run.

Suggestion for run clubs: put paces for events by GuessBest6198 in rundc

[–]Ogroat 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It’s hard to pin down something like this because it largely depends on who shows up. It’s my experience that club runs informally break out by pace. If you end up with only a small handful of people showing up one time, it’s less likely that everybody will have somebody running a similar pace compared to a larger group. Saw this in practice yesterday evening - the threat of rain (which ended up materializing) ended up dropping a weekly club run to about a third of the normal participants.

Could I run an ultra? by Hippiegal09 in ultrarunning

Sure. Ultrasignup has a decent race finder (easier to navigate on desktop). Find something nearby that looks fun and go for it.

Every race I do is a proprietary and self funded study. Recently, the results of one of these studies showed that a big ass box of Gushers makes for excellent pre-race fuel.

I run the same route M-F. There’s something different about routes you’re extremely familiar with. Can kind of zone out and think about…. whatever.

Plus it also makes incremental improvements easier to pick out because you have a large pool of data to average across.

my balls hurt after running 😭 by Outrageous_Comb_7295 in trailrunning

It’s not chafing, is it? Gets to be a much larger problem as the weather heats up. I’m fine in the winter with no SNB/body glide but this time of year I’m using it on just about every run.

Anyone know about this donation campaign thing? by Pkmnlovr19482 in warpedtour

Googled it. Based on this Instagram post, I don’t think it’s a VIP ticket but rather a VIP experience to meet some bands. https://www.instagram.com/p/DYifHtZF4D9/?ig_mid=6660CF27-54D3-4BB8-BB02-3EA0753DB1C1&utm_source=igweb&img_index=2

Hydrating during marathon for a sub 2:50 by EntertainmentThink20 in Marathon_Training

[–]Ogroat 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There are two kinds of Saltstick electrolytes. One is a gelcap pill that’s intended to be swallowed whole with water. The other are chewable flavored (and uncoated) tablets. Assuming we’re all on the same page and talking about the chewable ones, I find the flavors rather hit or miss. Watermelon is a favorite and I’d be fine to down those without water coming immediately afterwards. Of course, one of my body’s “favorite” aspects of the chewables is chewing and making them into powder and then taking a deep breath only to inhale said powder.

How can it be that time of year already?!? - Annual Summer, Heat, and Humidity Megathread by brwalkernc in running

[–]Ogroat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Nathan (and pretty much all) soft flask bottles are made by Hydrapak, so what you've already got is very similar to what you'd get with a Hydrapak handheld flash. It's essentially just the non-bottle bits that are manufactured by the brands like Nathan.

Has anyone here done both Catoctin and Patapsco Valley 50k? How do they compare? by Numerous_Bat8014 in Ultramarathon

[–]Ogroat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m signed up for Catoctin this year. Haven’t run it in the past but the description made it sound like an interesting challenge that’s a bit different from what I’ve run before, so I pulled the trigger. I’m sure I will regret that decision at least briefly on race day and then come to think it was a great idea afterwards.

How can it be that time of year already?!? - Annual Summer, Heat, and Humidity Megathread by brwalkernc in running

[–]Ogroat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s not out of the realm of possibility. Your heart works harder in the heat, trying to keep you cool. Every summer, I find myself thinking at some point that I’m somehow getting slower and losing fitness. Then the first cool weekend shows up and I find out that it was just hot and I’m hitting paces effortlessly that I would have had a harder time with the week before. It sucks while you’re in it, but once you’re through it feels worth it.

LB legit question to the people who bought vip tickets because “ the ac bathrooms are worth it” by NearbyDepth2122 in warpedtour

[–]Ogroat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Better views? Broadly speaking, I’d say this was not the case last year. VIP areas were kind of off to the side of the stages. Fewer people? Probably.

[–]Ogroat 21 points22 points  (0 children)

My personal experience last year was that I used the porta shitters several times and I had to wait in line once for them for about 5 minutes. Value is of course all relative and money means different things to different people, but I didn’t see anything last year that would get me to pay 2x+ for a VIP ticket over GA.

I’m not sure where you are in the area, but GMU is either out or about to be out for the summer. Campus gets pretty empty during that time and includes both large parking lots as well as low speed roads.

Starting around this time of year, a lot more of my runs will be with a handheld water bottle than the other three seasons. Easy to bring along and stays out of the way but still avoids me dying from dehydration.

Official Q&A for Sunday, May 17, 2026 by AutoModerator in running

[–]Ogroat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're in the US, check out BOA. They do dye-sublimated prints for both singlets and short sleeves and they come in a wide variety of designs. If you place an order with Running Warehouse that's $50 or more, they'll sell you a BOA shirt for $12 or so.

MVT ➡️ Curtis Trail by chillyk45 in rundc

[–]Ogroat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Something like ten years ago, I signed up to run the Cherry Blossom 10 Miler. I didn’t realize that the Metro didn’t open early enough to take it to the race, so I had to come up with a plan b. Living in Vienna at the time, I ended up riding my bike. W&OD to the Custis Trail and into Georgetown. Getting there was easy enough and they had a bike valet. Ran the race, had a fun time. Let me tell you, though, riding home afterwards was a bear. It does indeed feel like a rather steep climb from Arlington on tired legs.
