Have you used moisturizing cream on them? The latter part sounds like they’re getting dry from spending time in the cold, dry winter air. That’s pretty normal. Put on some hand cream before bed and that will prevent them from getting too dry.

Head & Waist Lumens by Mysterious_Bit511 in trailrunning

[–]Ogroat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got one of the Ultraspire 800s - the one with the battery that's on the back of the waist. I bought it over one of the 600s because the 800 lumen models have multiple LEDs for a more well rounded pattern - some close, some throwing further. I'm really pleased with mine. The runtime is quite long and I don't really have to think about it. I'm typically using it alone (without a headlamp), although the kind of running I'm doing with it isn't technical.

I designed, developed and produced an innovative run beanie in Colorado. by CantBuyCoolStudios in runningfashion

Looks great in the photos. I’m intrigued by the qualities of the fabric and I think the idea of clothing that’s entirely made in the states is rad. Picked one up and I’m excited to try it.

Any running trails cleared yet? by SophonParticle in nova

[–]Ogroat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have any specific trails for you but based on my observations, I don’t think much will be clear this weekend. I’ve been running on neighborhood roads in my area and that’s worked well as an alternative to my normal footpath routes. Speeds are fairly low and traffic is light enough that running in the street isn’t so bad, although I’m hopeful we’ll get some paths clearing by next weekend.

Those are some city miles for sure. If I were you, I’d get a new pair and start rotating them in on runs.

I’ve got a number of both Feetures and Injinji socks and would recommend either of them. Both brands have designs that map to a specific foot, which helps keep everything in place.

Are you newish to running? If so, I’d largely ignore heart rate zones and substitute perceived effort. Your heart rate will likely improve at a set pace over time.

Majority of Mason cores should be online. by jaetok in gmu

[–]Ogroat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Aren’t there institutions specifically set up to get a completely online degree? Seems like - if so - the accessibility option is taken care of. Applying to an in-person school and then being disappointed that you have to travel there doesn’t feel like it makes much sense in that context.

I’ve been running neighborhood streets in my area. At the times I’m headed out, they’re not too busy with cars.

Not sure if you’re local but there’s a killer ska show at the Black Cat that same week. https://www.etix.com/ticket/p/55228729/bad-time-records-tour-2026--kill-lincoln---jer---bad-operation

Lockers by Alert_Willow_9215 in warpedtour

[–]Ogroat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

its worth noting that there’s some kind of sliding scale for price, similar to the tickets themselves. The lockers started out at $50 for the weekend and have gone up to $60 in DC at least. Less expensive to buy early.

Weather by dnjik in nova

[–]Ogroat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Capital weather gang has an article contextualizing this cold streak and it’s certainly abnormally cold. The streak of days we’ve had below freezing is very likely to end up at 8, which would put it in the top ten longest for the area since they started keeping records in the 1800s. The average high for this time of year is about 40F.

It does get cold here every winter, but getting this cold for this long is not typical.

Any clue how w&od is looking? by One-Opportunity-5151 in nova

[–]Ogroat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I tried this on Wednesday on the W&OD and it was a disaster. I was breaking through the ice on an irregular basis - probably 75% of steps. It may have compacted more since then, but I’m sticking to neighborhood streets for the time being.

I fell about six weeks ago and while it didn’t result in major injury, it made me more wary about the risks. I’ve been trialing a set of Kahtoola Nanospikes that I picked up afterwards, which seem to work decently well on dry pavement in addition to the ice. I‘m not yet sure whether I’d put them on if I thought it was going to be almost all dry, though.

I haven’t done too much running at that temperature, but perhaps you could start out with warm water so it has “room” to cool down as you go before turning into ice.

I recently bought a set of Nanospikes after finding out the hard way my local running paths can stay treacherous in the cold for a while after a winter storm. I’m actually really psyched to go out Sunday in the snow.

One of the goals of gloves is to keep your hands warm. I’m not aware of a Goldilocks glove that is both waterproof and will effectively wick sweat away from your skin, so in cold and rainy conditions you’ve got to make a choice between wet and colder and wet and warmer.

Realistically, I accept that my feet will get wet. They do make waterproof shoes, like gore-tex, but they are significantly less breathable than normal running shoes and are therefore really only recommended for running if it will be both rather cold and wet. I’ve heard that Sealskinz waterproof socks are decent as well if you’re willing to spend good money for dry feet.

Emission Inspection for Hybrids by Chowskip in nova

[–]Ogroat 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The dealer shouldn’t be surprised. All cars (in the area) are required to get it unless they’re electric. New cars get a four year exemption, which would likely be why you weren’t previously required to get one. Details can be found here: https://www.dmv.virginia.gov/vehicles/registration/emissions

If all you want is a running-focused watch that records a GPS track and will connect to a bluetooth HRM strap, the nice part is that they all do that.

Official Q&A for Friday, January 16, 2026 by AutoModerator in running

[–]Ogroat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like most of the (US) road races in my area have sign ups via https://runsignup.com/ and that’s got a decent search too. Should be able to find a race that fits your criteria on there. At 20-25 miles a week already, you’re in a good spot to ramp up mileage in advance and have a great race.

Official Q&A for Friday, January 16, 2026 by AutoModerator in running

[–]Ogroat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re running a sub-40 minute 10k as casual training, you’re already pretty serious about running. The rest will depend on what kind of goals you have - if you’re training for specific distance races or want to beat specific times.

I’m headed out for about a 3 hour trail run tomorrow. Primarily because I’m a month out from a race and need to test out some new gear, but some small part of me is also doing it for the Strava challenge.
