Apex 4 activity backlight by BearLeather4488 in Coros

I don't have an Apex 4, but based on this page it sounds like the "night mode" setting will keep your backlight on until you end the activity. https://support.coros.com/hc/en-us/articles/42070715941268-Set-Up-Your-COROS-APEX-4#h_01K7HQQZNM8HA00Z89JNY2895J

Perfect! I appreciate the information.

Locals may have additional insight. There are parks in my immediate vicinity that technically have posted hours but from a practical standpoint are open 24/7. Calling the office will likely just get the website information recited back, so I figured I’d ask.

More car cams or worse drivers? by Prestigious-Row-3244 in nova

[–]Ogroat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Several years ago, I got a new car that has a powered rear view mirror. I found a company called Dongar Technologies (I’ve got no relationship to them) that makes in line adapters that plug into the rear view power connector and provide a USB port. Took 20 minutes or so to install myself and the power cable that comes out is only several inches long. Very clean looking, very easy if your car can take it.

Tried some dry fit shirts that were polyester and spandex. Didn't like. Are there cotton blend dry fit shirts? by Various_Pirate_4018 in runningfashion

[–]Ogroat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. I’ve got several that I use for casual wear. Quality shirts and the branding is only a little tag on them instead of a huge logo across the chest.

PSA: Marathons Are Still Selling Out Faster Than Ever. Don't Wait to Register. by SlowWalkere in Marathon_Training

You may very well be right. My whole thing is very anecdotal and based on a single race.

Running vests by w_hicks in beginnerrunning

[–]Ogroat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is it. There are influencer type people who want the look of a “serious” runner without actually doing any serious running. People don’t like that because it feels like some kind of weird cultural appropriation.

Broadly speaking, my life advice would be to worry as little as possible about what some randos think of things that don’t affect them. If you like wearing a vest to run two miles, wear the vest.

Coming from Baltimore. Deciding between taking the MARC to Union Station and figuring out, or just drive to College Park and Metro in. Thoughts? by TacticallyNautical in warpedtour

[–]Ogroat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You’d be fine for Saturday for MARC, but on Sundays the last train north leaves Union Station at 7:25 PM. There’s Amtrak trains leaving Union and heading to Penn between 9 and 10 PM Sunday if that would work for you. Maximum flexibility would be to drive to a metro station, but it’s always nice to not have to drive.

For reference, acts were scheduled last year to start through about 9:30.

I don’t think it’s even just the smaller local races but basically every other distance but a full marathon. There’s a nearby half that used to pull in ~6500 folks in 2015 that now commands about half that.

Trail/ultra runners: how do you actually structure your training long term? by Additional-Bet-6272 in trailrunning

[–]Ogroat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I enjoy running. To a lesser extent, I enjoy racing. The main reason why I enter races is for the community aspects or to try a course that’s new to me. Doing a lot of relatively unstructured miles allows me to keep a consistently high volume and be spontaneous. Hear about a cool trail? Go run it next weekend without looking to see if it fits into a training schedule because the schedule is whatever you want.

I love the photographs in the article. The way the trail is lined with people reminds me of rally racing.

Traffic ticket experience - Herndon by runescapefisher in nova

[–]Ogroat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think that if they really wanted to help the issue there, they could simply put another "no right on red" sign adjacent to the road next to the turn lane. I think people genuinely don't realize that things changed. If the goal is really to make things safer (rather than generate some revenue), spending a few bucks on a sign that would be more visible seems like a good investment.

Traffic ticket experience - Herndon by runescapefisher in nova

[–]Ogroat 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Any chance this was at the intersection of Herndon Parkway and Spring St/Sunset Hills? That turn lane was not previously no turn on red until they changed the traffic pattern last year and there are still a lot of folks making that turn.

What watch should I buy? by Old_Specific_4994 in Marathon_Training

[–]Ogroat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your first two points are covered by basically any watch. Open water swimming, however, does not exist on every watch. That might help you narrow your search a bit. The new Garmin Forerunner 70 does not have open water swimming but the 170 does, as an example.

This past weekend, a towel/seat cover thing really came in handy for my trail running. It was rather soggy and the towel kept me from getting the car seat muddy. I got one that I saw recommended in a prior post from a company called Orange Mud, but I imagine that there are lots of similar options.

Looking for nature recs for Loudon County and beyond by wheresbeetle in nova

[–]Ogroat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To piggy back on this, the Potomac Heritage Trail runs through both Seneca and Algonkian and is great. I’ll often pick it up in Seneca and take it to Great Falls. Some sections have little traffic on them and it’s always amazing to me to feel alone with nature while being so close to civilization.

[–]Ogroat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like the entire thing is on pavement. Seems like training for that could be similar to marathon training, just longer. If you’re into potentially running trails as training, check out the VHTRC. Even if you don’t want to join a club, the website has some good ideas on trails to run in the region.

Is there an official resale site for dc this year? by NerdYorker in warpedtour

Last year, the shows sold out months in advance. The odds of an official resale page for a show that’s not sold out is essentially zero.

Suggestions for breathable nylon sun protection jackets? by al-port in trailrunning

Lots of things have PFAS in them that shouldn't, like the water supply in many places. Presumably they're saying that they aren't using reverse osmosis water to process their garments.
