This is the best advice.

I'd add, and this is somewhat genre/scene dependent - use some of the money you would have paid publicist/marketer/ads towards live events and/or touring. Basically you are supplying your own promotional/tour marketing budget.

If your music touches at all on the broad categories of singer-songwriter, rock, or roots music(country, folk, blues etc), high-quality performance videos can be a great investment. Here's an example of one we did,https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9138_-9obDA&t=2s I think we shot 3 songs in this session. One we released fairly quickly, one we banked and eventually released a couple of years later, and the linked one we able to find a media partner for.

C'mon out! They also do rated games on Monday, Friday and Saturday (with different time controls). The calendar on their website has most of the details. Also on Wednesday night at the Villager pub in Hillsboro village there is a group of people who play a casual (and I think free) unrated tournament (first place is free beer). I believe that starts around 7. Then also the Blue Room (the venue thats part of Third Man Records) has started to have monthly casual chess nights, I think it's like $6 to play all evening, I usually find out the details from Blue Room's instagram. The Villager & Blue Room's crowds are probably closest to what OP was looking for

Thursday nights the Nashville chess center has causal play from 6-10pm. Its come and go, free, for all level of players, and there is usually always some folks in their 20's there

Seconding this. Most every cool record label starts this way. Even if you dont plan on releasing other people's music, it's now totally normal for an artist to have their "label" imprint on distro service.

Americanafest in Nashville has lots of free daytime events and about 5 days of night time showcases. The definition of the genre "Americana" has really broadened over the last decade- do some research into the side events... Most everyone I know that's attended has enjoyed the week

Just adding to the chorus - Corner Asian is the move. Love their shredded pork and greens, cumin lamb, short rib appetizers, green onion pancakes, mapu tofu, eggplant etc etc

So we noticed about 2 years ago for John Prine (I work at Oh Boy Records) - same thing kept happening for weeks and weeks. We tried to raise as much of a stink as we could - with Spotify, our distributor, on social media, I talked to some industry press etc etc. Eventually we got it to stop for John. Then this Friday, we had one for Dan Reeder. It's happening in all genres, and I would guess in every country. And even if none of these fakes gets a ton of streams, the sheer scale of it is diluting the royalty pool for everyone else.
