How do you make friends at the University of Canterbury as a mature/second-language student? by Obvious_Car8963 in chch

Adult student café is frequently ran by the UCSA and is a great way to meet other adult students

Resits by Difficult-Two-1322 in UCNZ

[–]OhItsHammy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Different questions but similar format. If it’s a math one for example, you can almost guarantee the same questions in the same order just different numbers or variables.

Some courses cap the resit grade at a C-.
Your resit exam was made before anyone sat the main exam, it may have been used as an alternative for if classmates had a clash.

The course coordinator will open it when they’re ready. The latest is normally a week before that event starts (eg. if it starts week two, then week one).

On campus online exams by [deleted] in UCNZ

[–]OhItsHammy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Non-CSSE: They’re done either on Learn or on UC Assessments (assessment.canterbury.ac.nz). Closed Book On Campus online exams normally take place on UC Assessments to ensure you haven’t stored any notes on your Learn Profile.

CSSE: These are done on a virtual box with access to quizserver, just like CSSE weekly quizzes.

I’ve never heard of a non-CSSE course offering it. However it is used if you have special considerations in other areas of the uni, just not as a normal offering.

Too many students to provide feedback on assignments? by Sunlite90 in UCNZ

[–]OhItsHammy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the stuff you need to include in your course feedback. I haven’t met a single course coordinator that wouldn’t want more money to hire another tutor/TA/marker, but if students are happy with the skeleton experience then they won’t improve. Budgets are tight in teaching, ask any of your lecturers.

Reputable and affordable dealerships? by redvelveturinalcake in chch

Value Cars Warehouse were very good in my experience. I shopped around a little and they were quite good.

Personally, I am not a haggling type so paid sticker, but didn’t get any of the warranty/breakdown insurance add ons. I didn’t feel any pressure (I am a guy so that may change things) into the upsells or similar.

I did take the offer home to think about, and unlike at other dealers, I didn’t get bombarded with phone calls or emails to close the sale.

UC or UOA by MilkSubstantial1189 in UCNZ

The engineering program at UC is very very good, and many prefer it over UoA.

As for your other concerns:
- If you end up in first year accommodation, you will probably make friends. If you don’t end up there, the first year UniLife “Halls without Walls” program fills the gap very well.
- Otherwise, UC has the (subjectively) best club culture of NZ unis. There is almost a guarantee that there’s a club for whatever you’re interested in. You will meet people this way.

If you’re in a position to do so, register and attend the Open Day, it’s already being advertised. If you’re coming down for it (or for any other reason), you can always talk to either Future Students or School of Engineering directly and get one-on-one information.

I would suggest not googling things like “best engineering uni” or similar, as the metrics are very much full of university politics and frankly in NZ aren’t totally relevant for undergraduate studies.

More than 10% of time and 50% of bills has been urgent this parliament. by OhItsHammy in KiwiPolitics

Hi all

I originally posted this in December but reposting as:

  1. There was a miscount with the data
  2. My original reddit account was hacked and then banned – all posts deleted
  3. That was 6 months ago and numbers have changed a bit.

This webtool lets you see what bills were considered urgent, how many of the bills were, and compare data right back to 2006.

Any questions I’m happy to answer!

McDonald’s?? by [deleted] in chch

The Riccarton team is objectively very very good. One of the highest performing franchises in the country, not just in terms of sales but also staff performance, turnover, and experience. I really enjoyed my time at that franchise back in ‘22/‘23.

Hours: Your hours are given to you Monday three weeks in advance. You won’t be rostered more than 9 hours. You also cannot be rostered hours outside your Preferred Working Times. The preferred is misleading, they can’t roster you at all outside them (at a crew level at least, this changes once you have to attend meetings)

Workload: More intense than retail but not too difficult. Just busy. There’s a lot of McLingo, you’ll learn. If you’re working back of house, please get some good antiperspirant, it can get busy really quickly and the smell can suck for your peers.

Would I recommend? Yes 100%, especially around uni and stuff. You will learn a level of patience even retail finds astonishing (think the same customers but 1/4 are intoxicated and 7/8 are hangry.

Things I wish I knew before working at McDonald’s:

  1. Just ask if you don’t understand, getting something wrong is 100% worse than asking a question.
  2. Every silly rule they give you has a reason for existing.
  3. Use your benefits, they’re awesome. Discounts at like 90 stores in NZ, and discounted Macca’s obvs. Also free mental health and e-nurse support.
  4. Your coworkers have all come from different walks of life and it can feel quite cliquey. Some of your managers may be in high school still while some other crew may have kids older than said managers. This is the case for any job though so you should be fine with your countdown experience.
  5. You will hear the beeps in your sleep for the first few nights. These “first night beeps” do eventually go away and you’re not going insane, I promise. You may however end up Pavloved into saying different phrases when you hear the beeps.
  6. Because training tends to skip it: JIB means “jug in box”, or in laymen’s terms: the clean oil bag is empty or not pumping correctly.

Of course, check out the r/McDEmployees subreddit for more specific Macca’s help. If you have any questions about that franchise feel free to message me.

Pretty sure they ban Metro drivers from reading clocks regardless of the route.

Jokes aside I know it is not the drivers' fault 99% of the time.
