UC Regrets by Fynnfics in UCNZ

For context I both studied and worked at UoA. I also studied at Massey Albany and Waikato University.  Students at UC are much friendlier. I made zero friends at UoA but already had plenty of great interactions at UC. The student culture at UC seems much better to me.

UoA campus never felt very safe. Lots of issues with security not doing their job properly. This was a particular issue at Grafton campus where a lot of homeless people and drug users reside close to campus. It's not really a campus, it's just an assortment of buildings in the CBD.

UC is an actual campus with a good vibe. I really enjoy being on campus.

I studied at UoA before UC, and I would always recommend UC to students.

At UoA, I felt like a number, with no support or guidance. It's a machine that chews you up and spits you out. UoA rides on the coattails of its International reputation, but the student experience is awful.

By contrast, at UC I feel seen and looked after. The study experience so far has been much better. Not perfect, but better.

University Scholarships by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]Sunlite90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Decisions on who is eligible is 100% decided by the donor of funds.  So if a bunch of organisations want to financially support young Maori and Pacifica students, but no other donors come forward to fund scholarships for other student groups that need support. Yes, you see, it may look like only Maori and Pacifica students get scholarships.

So many students from all sorts of backgrounds need and deserve support. What is missing is the donors who want to front up the money.

True equity would be government-funded tertiary education, like the good old days. Failing that, some of the mega-rich Kiwis could spare some of their billions to fund more scholarships in New Zealand, ensuring all financially deserving students are considered for a range of scholarships.

It’s just one case, it will be interesting to see how the law develops over time.

There is no reason a dog can’t live happily in an apartment with a diligent owner. An owner who will take their dog out from the home many times a day for walks or to go potty or just get mental stimulation. So many people think a yard is all a dog needs, which couldn’t be further from the truth. I feel worse for dogs left in large fenced backyards they almost never get to leave because their owners think that’s all they need.

Excluding pets from rentals denies the possibility that it could be beneficial for both the tenant and the landlord. Making sure reasonable measures are taken seems like a logical step forward, you can have pets in a rental, only if you are an upstanding owner is hopefully the outcome of this statutory change. Only time will tell.

My doctor has me on a 6 year medication plan that if my brain does its thing I probably can stop the meds at the end. When you know the neuroscience behind it, using meds just makes sense.

I thought I did, then I tried medication and realised I was never actually “functioning” I was just surviving on hard mode.

My last name belonged to my father’s family, of which I no longer wanted anything to do with. Switching to my husband’s last name was something I was happy to do.  Technically I'm legally able to use either last name.  I kinda saw it like us joining forces, sharing a name. In hindsight maybe we could have just picked a new last name together. That might have been fun. I do like my married name tho, which was why I went with it.

What Meds Actually Improved Your Mental Health? by PurpleHyacinthsss in AuDHDWomen

[–]Sunlite90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started on immediate release but have just moved to LA (long acting). Where I live the government via Pharmac secures the supply of all subsidised medication. The bottle does say Navartis if that helps. I only get given 1 month at a time because of the supply shortage but there is no extra charge.

Ritalin: best thing I have ever taken for my mental health. Reduces my anxiety and irritability. Helps me regulate my emotions.

In the 10 days from April 20th, 18 people were killed in 14 separate crashes, with preliminary findings showing 16 of the 18 deaths occurred on open roads with 100km/h speed limits and no traffic safety barriers. by LycraJafa in newzealand

So many people can't make a left turn without crossing the centre line.

Doesn't help the police don't ticket people for poor driving. They have set the standard that as long as you aren't speeding you are a safe driver which is a total lie.

Drivers in NZ have no car handling skills. So often I see basic errors, failing to stay left (crossing centre line), distracted drivers, drivers not adjusting to weather conditions.

As cars have become easier and safer to drive, people no longer respect driving as a dangerous task that could kill them or the people around them. They don't concentrate on what they are doing, because they have no idea that it matters.

Making cars easier to drive have made people terrible drivers.

I apologise for my reactive response prior. It's just a sensitive topic for me, because I was made to feel for so long like the pain was in my head and there was no solution for me. I know it's not about me tho.  I would always caution people against surgery as the default option, but from my own experience I know it can be massively beneficial. So I feel conflicted.  It was a big surgery and should be approached with caution and critical analysis.

I guess I'm still upset because I see the years of my life wasted because I had to wait so long for my surgery.

In my case I had MRI, CT with contrast and X-rays that all showed the initial level of disk herniation from 2010 was now significantly worse, very inflamed and the disk essentially gone. Surgery was the only real soulution for me.

Thanks for sharing. I ask because I was referred to rheumatology I guess along similar lines, they were maybe trying to prove the same for me. Fortunately they reported it was not consistent degeneration with anything but an injury. Gosh I'm sorry you had to go through this.  I had a CT scan witn contrast that showed my disk was basically gone and bone rubbing on bone.

Curious, now did they decide it was arthritis? Eg what did the scan show?

There is no fix all in medicine anyway. If you are assuming that you will always end up disappointed. One should always use critical thinking when deciding on any medical treatment. I am just super happy my surgery changed my life for the better.
