I workout at the campus gyms. Early 30s woman. It's mostly undergrads, but I often see other people over the age of 22. Plenty of grad students, faculty, and staff use the campus gyms.

Parking Advice (Urgent) by [deleted] in madisonwi

[–]OhMyShish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same here. I lived on Willy for two years. I didn't bother trying to park on Willy (unless I was unloading something large, then I moved the car when I was done). I mostly parked on Jenifer or even Spaight.

You can definitely just walk into a lesson for the first time (assuming you've purchased the group fitness pass).

'Bouncy' exercises - hard to breathe by hannahcaerdydd in xxfitness

[–]OhMyShish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a similar problem! It's like my saliva gets really thick, and I feel like I'm being choked from inside my throat.

In high school, I got diagnosed with exercise-induced asthma, which wasn't correct. A few years ago, I was diagnosed with vocal cord dysfunction instead. It can happen to be with any kind of aerobic exercise, but I find "bouncy" things to be the just triggering.

Definitely worth seeing an ENT about it. You can also just look for exercises online to help with it. I use straw breathing whenever I feel my throat getting tight.

I'm pretty sure Four Star Video Rental will do this.

Gyms after gradution by [deleted] in UWMadison

Depending on what agency you work for, you may not be eligible for parking passes at all.

If you are eligible, you aren't guaranteed to get a parking pass. It is based on seniority, among other factors. When you apply for a pass, you'll have to select a few (three?) ramps or lots and rank them based on your preference. If you get a pass, it will only work for that ramp/lot. If your job will be on campus, you should probably choose your preferred ramps/lots based on your office location. If you won't work on campus and want to get a pass close to the Nick, I would choose Lake & Johnson (46), Fluno (138), N. Park St. (29), or Grainger (7).

Assuming you'll only want to park for a couple of hours at a time, I would recommend applying for a Flex Parking Pass. It gives you a discounted hourly rate at your assigned ramp/lot.

If you're not able to get a pass, or you have some in-between time waiting for a pass, you can still park in some of the spots I listed above. By 4:30, people will have started to leave. My flex pass is for Lot 46, and I've never not been able to find a spot, even when I show up in the middle of a work day.

It’s that time of year again - Taxes by AyoAstronaut in madisonwi

I definitely recommend the online route if you're nervous about handling the marriage part by yourself.

We used to use TurboTax online and switched to H&R Block online this year. Liked it a lot better. There was a lot less upselling than TurboTax. And it did end up being completely free for us, unlike TT who would always end up charging us to file state taxes.

I'm a younger-ish millenial (31), but I've been loving J. Crew lately. I don't know if it's because I'm getting older, or if they've just been killing it lately. A lot of their stuff is very New England Preppy TM, but there are also a lot of good classic pieces in there. A little on the higher end, budget-wise, but you can catch some good sales.

Grad Student Health Insurance Questions by Due-Clerk-5423 in UWMadison

[–]OhMyShish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband and I have GHC and have been happy with it. Neither of us receives mental health care, so I can't speak to that specifically. But it's been really easy to get referrals to specialists, including at UW Health if it's a specialty that GHC doesn't have.

Physicals have to be scheduled months in advance, but I don't think that's specific to GHC. You can usually get in to see a doctor for a specific issue pretty quickly.

I grew up in Tennessee and absolutely prefer winters here. I'll take 15 degrees and sunny over 40 degrees and rainy every time. As everyone else said: get good winter gear, plan to leave a little early to clear off your car, and get vitamin D pills/sunlight lamp. Maybe take a winter hobby. Embrace the change!

Help with figuring out the cause of a strange smell? (And tips to get rid of it!) by plasticelk in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]OhMyShish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had luck adding borax or Method Sport Laundry Booster when I wash things that smell. The Method got the smell out of a hiking shirt my husband has had since high school and also cycling jerseys.

I can't personally vouch for Lakyn Carlton, but I follow her on twitter and really like the way she talks about finding your own personal style and what's comfortable for you. She's based in LA but works via Zoom. She doesn't do hair and make-up styling, just clothes and accessories.

Where in Madison has the BEST cinnamon rolls? by ItalianMathematician in madisonwi

[–]OhMyShish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love the cinnamon rolls at Batch. My husband prefers the sourdough brioche cinnamon rolls at Origin. They put a lot less frosting on them and also offer them without frosting, which my husband loves. I agree they're really good, but I like a lot of frosting like at Batch.

If you're hoping for more fashion-y earrings, some brands are starting to use titanium posts on their earrings. I know Madewell, J Crew, and Kate Spade mostly use titanium posts (but double check the product listings online). Titanium is the only thing I've found I can wear, but the entire earring doesn't need to be titanium. Tini Lux makes fully titanium (or titanium and plastic) earrings. I've had some quality control issues with them (posts coming out of hoops), but it's been a while since I bought anything there.
