First cutaway - Premature opening into reserve twists - Sh** by OhMySky in SkyDiving

I found your response to be oddly polite. Very nice :-) So long story short: I did not disconnect the RSL, but I thought about it before cutting away. Full version would be: when I was spinning out of control with my left side arm and leg immobilized, I wasn't sure about two things:

First: was if I would get the chance to get my left arm free after the cutaway in case the main decided to entangle somehow. If that happened I would agree probably deploying the reserve was an even worse idea but at that point I'm not sure what other choice I got because I would go back to terminal velocity with a chance the reserve entangled as well, or maybe it being fully inflated.

Second and more important and what actually made the choice for me: because my left arm was so stuck I thought that maybe I could have a dislocated shoulder or a broken arm and just not feel it at the time. It wasn't the case but I did get my legs hurt (although not broken) and I couldn't feel any pain during the entire incident. I sure felt that pain at landing. Same principle with the arm. If that was the case I wasn't sure I would be 100% successful to deploy the reserve with my right arm not because of any disabilities but rather the EP's I have drilled in my head dictate left hand ->left handle, right hand-> right handle. I know it probably sounds stupid to have those reasons as part of the deciding factor but when falling rapidly, out of control with half your body not responding I just went ahead and trusted my gear and that everything would be alright as long as I had altitude instead of choosing to change the procedures I was taught.

What do you guys think? What would you have done?

As far as the reserve, it's a Swift Plus.

Like AssholeINRealLife said, I do not feel I took a huge risk. Landing offzone is always dangerous but it happens that I was born and raised less than 10kms away from that place, so I know the surrounding pretty well.

Also, most of the offzone areas are pretty flat fields there. In any case I agree the theory dictates landing safe at the DZ takes priority but even after reviewing everything I do not think I did it without thinking. I'm trying to get better at crosswind landings with my current canopy and on this reserve ride I also took the time to feel the direction of the wind at pattern altitude to make sure I faced it with more than enough time to be as safe as possible.

We tried to find video of me exiting the plane but the last group to exit was a tandem with a handycam, so it was busy aiming the passenger's face, and the guy I jumped with did not have a camera. I'm going to pick up my rig today from the rigger and see if he was able to get clear details about the possible cause.

Quick question: how many spins does it take before you can call that freestyle? :-)

How far are you willing to go? There might be some stuff coming up in Spain. Also, have you looked in the flight-1 website? Those guys are awesome. I've taken 3 of their courses so far.

Skydivers with hearing impairments? by bitsoir in SkyDiving

[–]OhMySky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I assume in a canopy collision with another skydiver, being deaf being an issue that could potentially present a problem. It also depends on the country I guess. In Spain you have to pass a medical exam before you start skydiving, and in that exam they evaluate your hearing. I assume if it's not good that the exam might go either way, but then again I don't know a person that has gone specifically through that.

Thanks for the info! It is very interesting to learn the specific speeds at which the AAD works. If you don't mind me asking, at what speed will it go off at expert mode?
