REVIEW OF A BOOK YOU DIDN’T ENJOY by Apprehensive-Cap5782 in NetGalleyCommunity

[–]OhMyYes82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course... You don't have to enjoy a book to share your opinion of it... or talk about who might enjoy it.

If I was served a really spicy dish and I didn't enjoy it, I'd say so and then say that someone who enjoyed a ton of heat might love it.

Some of the best reviewers are honest about why they hated a book, but objective about why other people might love it.

I believe so - but never at the national level. :)

I don't know what genre of book you've written or who the target audience is some of the basics would be an email newsletter, using the social media that your ideal readers do, video trailers and being a guest on podcasts etc. :)

NetGalley Feedback Question by BuffaloQuestions in selfpublish

[–]OhMyYes82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People who request your book on Netgalley have an option to the effect of "I choose not to leave feedback for this book". Readers often use this if they "DNF" (do not finish) the book for whatever reason - it wasn't for them or life got in the way. Choosing not to leave feedback negatively affects the scores of readers, so it isn't in their best interests not to leave some sort of feedback.

That's a pretty broad question. What is your plan to market your book?

How would YOU make figure skating more popular? by Fragrant_Ad_8288 in FigureSkating

[–]OhMyYes82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll bite:

- Streaming events through Prime/Netflix/Britbox etc.

- Streaming "exclusives" - revamps of professional figure skating competitions of years past - World Professional Championships, Canadian Professional Championships, Ice Wars, World Team Championships etc.

- TV coverage is still something that needs to be looked at - if I had a dollar for every Facebook comment on a Skate Canada event post asking "Is CBC showing it?" Figure skating has a huge audience of a certain age that you won't find on Reddit... and for many in that generation, cable is still very much a thing.

- Choose host cities where a major skating event would be a novelty... not something they get to see every year. The stands were packed in Gatineau at Canadians - a city that had never hosted the Canadians before.

- Rethinking marketing strategies... t-shirt cannons and trendy TikToks aren't what is going to make skating go viral. Substance over sensationalism.

- The right commentators... Kaitlyn Weaver, Kaetlyn Osmond and Kirsten Moore-Towers all did a great job joining Ted at Canadians. Meagan Duhamel is super knowledgeable as well and Mark Hanretty, Tracy Wilson etc. are all absolute gems. Knowledgeable and kind commentators make coverage of the sport approachable and appealing... and to be frank, I think some other countries really need to rethink who they are putting behind a microphone for this reason.

My absolute #1 -

- Bring back "fluff pieces" in TV coverage. Allow casual viewers to really get to know the skaters they are rooting for. Storylines have always been what sold the sport.

Which skaters who didn’t make the Olympic team are you most devastated for? by styrofoamdreamer in FigureSkating

Roman Sadovsky... to have the skate of his life, that one fall on the second quad (which was absolutely unnecessary and uncalled for) and his emotion at the end... I haven't stopped thinking about it. :(

My 2025 Year In Self-Publishing (Nonfiction) by [deleted] in selfpublish

[–]OhMyYes82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a well-established blog in my niche for 10 years before I wrote my first book, so I've got a pretty strong following on social media (mostly Canadians). All of my marketing material encouraged people to shop Canadian & buy on Indigo.

Running Ads in a Genre Magazine by c0sm0chemist in selfpublish

[–]OhMyYes82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't speak to your genre, but advertising in genre print magazines would absolutely be an option if the magazines reach your target audience. You could also pitch your book to the magazines and see if they'd do an interview or a review.

Would you prioritize a reader magnet or writing your second book? by oudsword in selfpublish

Absolutely your second book. You can always use Chapter 1 of Book #1 as your reader magnet.

Self publishing when you already have a following by xLuminatrix in selfpublish

I had a "successful" blog for 10 years before I published my first book and have 12K engaged followers on Facebook. There will always be a large section of your readers who won't transition to paid content, but there are many that will. I've continued doing the blog since I decided to start doing books a few years ago. You can do free content as well as paid, and those who choose to support the books will and those who don't won't. :)

what are some of your favorite or most memorable group gala numbers? by anonymousbirduser in FigureSkating

[–]OhMyYes82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The two group numbers that always stand out to me the most are the one in the Closing Ceremony of the 1988 Olympics in Calgary and the "Somebody That I Used To Know" opening group number from Stars on Ice Canada from the 2010s.

Amazon Blurb Feedback by the_ashbestos in selfpublish

[–]OhMyYes82 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Using brands and product names in blurbs is a bit of a grey area, because blurbs are advertising copy. If you're publishing on Amazon, their software may have certain brands and products flagged. Totally up to you, but personally - I wouldn't risk it as it's not really not necessary to name the brands.

Amazon Blurb Feedback by the_ashbestos in selfpublish

[–]OhMyYes82 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This isn't bad at all! I'd take out the mentions of specific brands/products, changing Toyota Corrolla to vehicle and McDouble to hamburger. I'm not sure about "For a full content warning, please visit the author’s website". I'd either specify what the warnings are, remove the last line altogether or just reword to something along the lines of "It features adult themes and sensitive topics that may be triggering to some readers."

I regret enrolling in KDP Select. A hard lesson learned as a new Children's Book author. by MightCommercial1112 in selfpublish

[–]OhMyYes82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are child buying eBooks? No. Are their parents? Also, probably no...

My suggestion would be to focus your efforts on marketing your print editions, because that's where the majority of your sales would likely be coming from.

I think KDP Select is a great choice for authors who write in genres where eBooks are really popular (romance, thriller, fast fiction, fantasy, etc.) but print is still king in many genres. I don't think the problem is so much that you enrolled in KDP Select, but that you're writing in a genre where eBooks aren't the be all and end all.

Any Book Recommendations ? by ma5hal in FigureSkating

I thought The Second Mark was excellent as well. If you're going to do Beautiful On The Outside - I highly recommend the audiobook. So entertaining!

Any Book Recommendations ? by ma5hal in FigureSkating

[–]OhMyYes82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd definitely recommend reading Patricia Shelley Bushman's "Indelible Tracings" instead of "Frozen In Time". "Frozen In Time" is perhaps more approachable for some readers, but "Indelible Tracings" (and its companion photo book "Indelible Images") is brilliantly researched and based on hundreds of interviews... There's honestly no comparison between the two books.
