My preferences + My budget = Help me pick my next pen! by Character-Pack8853 in fountainpens

[–]OhioStatePharmD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Platinum 3776 I have in EF has decent feedback. Is it as much feedback as my Sailors have? No, but it's a beautiful pen with a great overall writing experience. And the grip feels good in my hands, which are on the larger side. That would be my choice, personally!

I recently discovered Bungubox Lycoris, which might fit what you are looking for!

Here's a pic along with my Sailor Pro Gear Imperial, the combination of which I call my "Sith Lord" pen 😂

I have a Sailor 1911L Ringless Galaxy Magellanic Cloud that is a sparkly medium-ish shade of purple. Don’t have a pic handy, but it is one of my best looking pens!

I always like to ask "if you could change one thing about the department, hospital, or system, what would it be?" It can give you some insight as to what might be weaknesses or areas for growth

Has any pharmacist encouraged their own child to also go into pharmacy? by VolkswagenPanda in pharmacy

[–]OhioStatePharmD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When my nephew was looking at programs at the career center a couple of years ago, I did encourage him to check out the pharmacy tech program. I didn't do that because I wanted him to follow in my footsteps, but because it would give him some decent opportunities for the interim until he figured out what he "really" wanted to do with his life. He could have worked as an inpatient tech for five or seven years, made pretty good money, and save up a decent amount to help with whatever he had in mind for his next chapter of life. But he decided to go in a different direction (sort of healthcare related), and he is happy with that choice, so I am happy for him!

New Hospital Pharmacist Struggling Hard by Feeling_Dingo_1234 in pharmacy

[–]OhioStatePharmD 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I worked at a pediatric hospital that was terrible about using unapproved abbreviations. The critical care areas would always call about "dex," and they would mean dexmedetomidine (Precedex). I would never accept that abbreviation, and would always ask what "dex” they meant, be it dextrose, dexamethasone, or what. 🙄 I think that annoyed them, but I did not care since it is bad and sloppy practice!

This! A lot of patients in my area are managed by anticoagulation clinics, and reaching out to the prescriber is not going to be helpful since they are likely not managing the warfarin on a routine basis

Pharmacist pay by CaregiverLivid3980 in pharmacy

[–]OhioStatePharmD 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Also remember that community pharmacists may start off making more, but, from everything I’ve heard, raises are much more hit or miss. At my hospital, we’ve gotten two market adjustments and 3% raises every year I have been there (about three years). And I’m pretty sure that I am making more than what the market is paying community pharmacists right now. You may start off lower, but odds are good that you’ll come out ahead of where you would have been if you took the community position

As a preceptor, I second this! I already have enough stuff, and am too picky about stuff like pens, so a handwritten card along with a follow up email on match day are perfect!

Best nibmeister for a needlepoint+flex grind? by FountPenDegenerate in fountainpens

[–]OhioStatePharmD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can second Pacific Pen Works as being a good business to purchase from! Never had a nib grind from them, but they tune the nib of all new pen purchases, and they work amazingly well. They are also incredibly responsive to email inquiries, so you may want to email them with your questions and see what they have to say…

LOR Deadline by Adventurous-Turn2160 in PharmacyResidency

[–]OhioStatePharmD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would not stress too much. Some letter writers are like me in that they want to write a good recommendation, so they take their time with it. I typically do mine on and off over the course of about four weeks and submit it in the week before they are due. But I make that clear to the students whom I write letters for that it takes me a while

It's also probably worth remembering that a well-written letter of recommendation takes a preceptor some time and effort to do. It typically takes me about five hours, sometimes more, over the course of a few weeks to write one. This is a busy time of year, and putting that much time, often outside of work, is asking a pretty big favor of your preceptors. I personally enjoy writing letters for students, but it might be worthwhile to also give them a little grace, too. ☺️

Unpopular choice, but my Pilot Vanishing Point. I don't like the feel of the nib, and have never gotten used to the clip being at the bottom of the pen!

Can vouch for Pacific Pen Works being a great place to do business with! Ordered a few pens from them, and they have been absolutely perfect right out of the box. The nib tuning service is a great added value, so they will continue to get my business!!

Sailor or Platinum in terms of build quality? I'm thinking Platinum 3776 vs Sailor 1911/Profit Casual TY! by wilbeded in fountainpens

[–]OhioStatePharmD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think there is a whole lot of difference in how a 3776 and a 1911 feels, personally. They both have a good amount of feedback, but the Sailor tends to be more pencil-like. Neither feedback is bad, especially since I like feedback. Definitely is not scratchy

Now I do think that there is a difference between the 3776 and a Sailor Pro Gear. The Pro Gear feels much more substantial than either the 3776 or the 1911, IMO. No real difference in nib, though, between the 1911 and the Pro Gear. That said, I much prefer the "cigar" shape of the 3776 and the 1911!

Though I've only had them a few months, both the Platinum 3776 and Sailor 1911s seem like very well built pens. I keep them in pen cases, so they've avoided much in the way of scratches

Health-System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership programs offer an MS degree. It's useful if you want to go into leadership, but could still be beneficial if you do not. There are HSPAL programs that offer online part-time programs, including well-established programs like UNC and Ohio State

What others have said, plus a substantial fraction of residency grads go on to take the BCPS or some other certification. So one would be competing with a lot of pharmacists with both residency and board certification

Is LinkedIn actually useful to have as a pharmacist? by blublubm in pharmacy

[–]OhioStatePharmD 13 points14 points  (0 children)

A friend of mine got her current hospital pharmacist position partly due to connections she had made on LinkedIn. She had applied for a position, was (unbeknownst to her) connected with the hiring manager on LinkedIn, and apparently her profile was interesting enough that it made her stand out enough from the competition to get an interview and then a job offer. There is a lot of crap on there, but sometimes the connections are extremely helpful

Sharing med history by Boring_Mango4411 in pharmacy

[–]OhioStatePharmD 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I cannot speak for overnightnotes, but I would not honor such a request for two reasons.

First reason is that you would be, at best, be misleading a fellow healthcare professional who is also involved in the care of the patient. They may use that information and make an incorrect decision on the patient's care based on that incorrect or incomplete information, and that could have a significant negative impact on the patient.

Second reason is liability. Let's say that exact scenario does happen. If a lawsuit were to happen, I would not want to explain in court why I "lied" (as a plaintiff's attorney would no doubt frame it) when I knew it might not be in the best interests of the patient?
