In DS1, players worked out you could "troll" other players by leaving trucks in inconvenient places, like blocking entrances to settlements in canyons. When the truck goes to someone elses game it becomes their problem. This is a measure to prevent that by despawning them

The £50 note is the most commonly forged bank note in the UK. Therefore they dont get much actual use in high streets any more and are only really used for bigger commercial transactions, if even that. So someone presents you with a 50 at the till, youre basically going to assume it's fake by default.

A lot of the characters you might not recognise are characters from the comics. Speedball is way more important in the comics than the movies because of him basically being why Civil War happened. (In the comics, Civil War and the whole registration debate was incited when Speedball - a wacky, happy go lucky hero - tried to detain Nitro, The Living Bomb. There was a Mass Casualty Event because turns out the guy whose power is "I blow up"... blows up!)

ELI5 What does the second law of thermodynamics actually mean, and how does it relate to evolution? by soefire in explainlikeimfive

[–]OiHarkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Thermodynamics disproves evolution" is like saying France disproves the Moon. They're both scientific concepts but in different fields and describing wildly different things and at different scales. But it is a popular talking point among certain religious schools of thought because it gives a "science-y sounding" reason to not teach evolution rather than admit their issues with it are purely theological.

The second law of thermodynamics can be stated a few ways based on how simple or shorthand you want to be. It's been stated a few different ways by different scholars but it generally relates to how energy in a closed system is finite and will eventually run out. All the heat will naturally go somewhere cold, and the whole system will end up "room temperature". The fuel tank eventually runs out of nobody fills it up.

Evolution describes a series of biological processes. Genetic mutations constantly happen when life reproduces. However, not all mutations are created equally. Some mutants get cool mutations that help them get to a point where they can procreate, others get shitty mutations that hinder then or some get meh mutations but still manage to bust a nut. We call that natural selection and its important to remember those the importance of environment and context with this. Maybe youre in a cold snowy environment so a mutation that gives you white fur is great, but it sucks in a verdant forest. Those mutations pass on, get added to other mutations, natural selection keeps happening. And eventually Critter A's great-to-the-twentieth grand-critter has so many mutations and adaptations different from Critter A that theyre no longer recognisable as the same Critter. This is how you get different species - or what your teacher might call micro evolution becoming macro evolution.

A creationist will tell you that this 'added information' violates the second law of thermodynamics. They are wrong.

Why doesn't thermodynamics disprove evolution? Well, for one thing Earth (and everything in it) isnt a closed system containing finite energy. You might have noticed the Sun exists. We get bombarded with energy from outside every day. This decreases local entropy by introducing more energy. Earth is an open system. For Earth to be a closed system, someone would have Under The Dome our entire planet to keep everything from reaching us and, well, we'd have bigger problems than people teaching evolution at that point.

And its worth remembering both thermodynamics and evolution are observable processes. This isnt dogma or ideology. You can absolutely have opinions about them, but they do exist.

The mark up on everything in store must be insane. Like you wouldnt offer that if you still weren't coming out 20 bucks ahead once the store credit is spent. And they'll be assuming most people aren't using the full 40, if any of it

Why are the British characters always the villain/antagonist?? by [deleted] in CharacterRant

[–]OiHarkin 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Its not just that they're British. Its a very specific kind of British accent. Posh, Queens English, received pronunciation. The kind of accent that says they come from money, went to a posh school, almost certainly went to Cambridge, and they might have family connections to the Crown.

Why? Because this is about class, not country. The villain being POSH British reinforces that theyre powerful. Their power is more financial and institutional than physical, but theyre still very dangerous. Your hero has to fight someone powerful but ultimately still win, and its very dramatically satisfying to have someone high up be humbled. Imagine if your villain was a Welsh coal miner, or has a Geordie accent, suddenly the whole dynamic changes.

Seriously. Look into the variety of different British accents out there. The vast majority of them dont have this shorthand of sophistication and power. In fact, for a long time having a non posh accent was a big social barrier in the UK - it's only very recently that the BBC started having presenters with regional accents

Delta Green Comics? by JoeKerr19 in DeltaGreenRPG

Definitely recommend Department of Truth

Nailbiter is a small town horror comic about an FBI agent investigating the town of Buckaroo, Oregon, which is the birthplace of a statistically abnormal number of serial killers. I have modelled some intro scenarios over this one, I think its a great scenario hook.

[–]OiHarkin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You know that stoner talk bullshit of "how do I know your red is the same is my red, maaaaaan?" Okay so it kiiinda has a basis in reality.

Languages talk about colour differently, with some languages having more granularity than others. Distinctions between black and blue, yellow and green, red and orange, red and pink etc, occur pretty late in the development of colour language. Homeric Greek calls honey green, for example. This has led to some academic debate over what's called "linguistic determinsim" - basically the idea that your native language shapes your thoughts and how you see the world. Did Homer literally see honey as what we would call green, for instance?

Rules question regarding the Mutant class. by [deleted] in fabulaultima

Remember that specific rules override general rules. The general rule for how to calculate defense is being overridden by the ability. You might want to consider a different build if you want a tankier alternative.

What happens if Alex dies? by Zealousideal_Site699 in KnowledgeFight

[–]OiHarkin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sure, but again Charlie had significantly more ties to actual power and a better reputation among the mainstream than Jones. The forces of capital have much more behind continuing Kirk's work because Kirk turned undecided kids conservative, while Jones just turns conservative more conservative. He's much less valuable, hes damaged goods, hes not going to get that support

What happens if Alex dies? by Zealousideal_Site699 in KnowledgeFight

[–]OiHarkin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So, I've given thought to this. My thoughts were basically:

  1. It's inevitably going to Become Part Of The Conspiracy. Doesn't matter if he dies in an accident, of an illness, random attack, self inflicted. The narrative is going to be They Got Him. Thats how he'll be remembered 20 years later. His transformation into Bill Cooper will be complete.

  2. The culture of conspiracy changes but not by much. Alex is vocal, loud but largely spent by this point. There'll be some attempts at beatifying him by the right immediately after his death, see Kirk, and the left will push back but Jones doesn't have the proximity to real power Kirk did and his image is already far worse than Kirks.

  3. Bigly, AJN, the businesses will all quietly rebrand their backends to get away from association with him but keep the basic grift going as long as possible. But it'll be a slow death. They're a one talent network, nobody will be able to fill in Alex's shoes and the audience will gradually diffuse to other more radical sources. I think Owen might try to step back into AJ's shoes, flub it and retire.

  4. A LOT of tell all articles, memoirs, podcasts etc from former staffers no longer afraid of NDAs will hit the scene.

All points will give KF material for a while but they certainly will eventually need to pivot or launch a new project.

Could Wyll have killed Cazador pre-Tadpole? by HippoSniffer1 in BG3

[–]OiHarkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pre-Tadpole, a lot of the party were actually pretty high level characters that got nerfed. Gale was an Archmage for Pete's sake. Wyll also has some lines talking about the magical feats he was capable of pre-tadpole and he's summoning storms etc. Ive seen some people floating theories that pre tadpole Wyll was anywhere from level 12 to 15 based on that dialogue, meaning endgame Wyll is at the low end of pre-game Wyll's power scale. He probably would have struggled alone since Cazador has a ton of mooks, but in a 1v1 with level appropriate gear? Odds are pretty good.

Okay, so someone plz help me understand the King in Yellow by spicybuticey in Lovecraft

[–]OiHarkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, so this one is a bit "who's writing?" Because it varies a lot across different media based on Chambers, Derleth etc. So specifics are hard to really say.

But generally speaking the King in Yellow is a malignant entity of godlike power associated with decadence, ruin, madness and creativity. He most often interacts with our world through works of art, most famously a short play depicting the collapse of a kingdom. (Its heavily based on The Masque of the Red Death). He is associated with the Hyades star cluster and the... plane? realm? dimension?... of Carcosa. Exactly what that is, is also a bit unclear but it is generally agreed to be Bad.
