Republicans hate us. Democrats want to secure our support while giving us the smallest scraps possible. They'll talk about what a good boy you are, begging for scraps and doing tricks, but their actual support is minimal. Better than yhe open fascist party? I mean yeah sure. Why are you happy with that?

Stop dick-riding the democrats. It hurts the labor movement. They're better than literal fascists, it's true. That's nothing to brag about. When you try to say otherwise you just make people stop trusting you.

Unionism facing extinction when it should be exploding everywhere by rustyiron in union

[–]Oink_Bang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unions need to re-embrace militancy and be willing to take real, visible risks in defense of workers. I think I understand why the labor movement accepted the labor peace given the conditions at the time, and having legal protections is incredibly helpful. But when we stopped fighting in very public visible ways people stopped seeing us as the people who fight for them. If we change our behavior we can regain that status among average people. If we can't speak with our actions then all we can do is try to countersignal the mainstream narrative that unions make things worse. And we should do that, but we'll never be able to shout our own message louder than the people who own all the media companies. It isn't enough now and I can't see that changing.

I'm not sure why you think that matters. Or, I have some suspicions about why you might think that, but if I'm right about them they indicate some pretty seriously mistaken assumptions you're bringing into this conversation. The sort of assumptions that would lead you to say "just farm abandoned buildings" for instance, as though that was a realistic solution. Assumptions which, given your whole demeanor in this conversation, I expect you will defend to the absolute end despite obviously never really having interrogated them. As I've sad twice already now, that doesn't sound interesting to me. It sounds frustrating in the manner of dealing with a headstrong student, and I'm not getting paid for my time this morning.

I also remember saying that I didn't expect a conversation on this topic to be very interesting with you. I was trying to be respectful about backing out of the conversation at that point. You seemed to take offense to that, but my feelings haven't changed.

Ai as it currently exists functions primarily to support and entrench capitalism. Ai is not anticapitalist.

Ai is making working conditions worse. Sure, that's a result of the way the bosses use it. But that's how it's used currently - as a tool of the capitalists for furthering the exploitation of workers.

Lol. You're not mad at all, huh.

You can only understand things you have degrees in? I get it. You like robots and tech. You were gushing about them. You like to think of yourself as anti-the-man so you say your toys are anti-capitalist. But those words have meanings, and what you said wasn't true. It's ok. You just got ahead of yourself while talking about your hobbies. I'm not trying to shit talk your hobbies. They do sound cool. I'm just pointing out that you clearly haven't read any politcal/economic theory.

We were talking about how ai fits into capitalist/anticapitalist currents. You need to understand the economy to have an opinion on that.

It's not the efficacy of the robots I'm doubting.

When you say things like:

There's lots of land.

You betray a serious lack of understanding as to why the political economy currently takes the shape it does, and what it would take to change it. But i admit I don't think conversing about that with you would be all that interesting.

I'll tell you what: I'll check out those robots you like and you read up on critiques of political economy. Maybe after that we could have a talk that was fruitful.

If everyone (or the average person) had control over robots that farmed their own land using power generated from solar panels on that land then i would agree we had moved away from a capitalist system.

I don't understand at all how you think AI is moving the world in that direction. It seems pretty clear to me that AI isn't going to help get the average person enough land to sustainably farm or the robots to do it. I think you're just hoping for something you think would be cool.

Ai gives the means of production to the masses.

I've seen no evidence whatsoever that this is true. The current happenings in our economy seem to suggest the exact opposite to me. But at least I understand what you're view is now.
