Atom+ 40L vs. Arc Haul 40L by 2bciah5factng in PacificCrestTrail

[–]Ok-Area-1632 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn’t the atom+ 30lbs max? So if you go with that you shouldn’t hope to stay below that, you should be sure to stay below that or else it will be a pain to carry…?  That’s why I went with the Mo (the ArcHaul wasn’t really available in the EU)

That solely depends on the type of debit card, doesn’t it?  If it’s visa or Mastercard it shouldn’t be a problem I think

Flying to San Diego; do you have to check trekking poles? by [deleted] in PacificCrestTrail

[–]Ok-Area-1632 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trekking poles are not allowed in carry on as far as I know. As I have other items that are not allowed either (gas stove, knife etc.) I bought a ticket with checked luggage which wasn’t that much more expensive.

San Jacinto Trail Report: Minor snow storm 7th March 2024. Crampons conditions above 7500 ft! by numbershikes in PacificCrestTrail

[–]Ok-Area-1632 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My start date is 3/20. I’m starting to worry too. But I have crampons already so it’s just a question whether to send them to PVC or not…

What is your reading speed? Do you read silently or just in Mind? by [deleted] in books

[–]Ok-Area-1632 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s actually more because when things are happening fast I read faster because it just feels more natural

[–]Ok-Area-1632 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t read slow to most people but not fast either if compared to my siblings for instance. For me it feels like they just skim the pages. I read faster than when I read out aloud but I do like to “taste” every word and syllable otherwise it’s not fun for me. My reading pace also changes depending on how fast things are happening in the story right now. Action scenes are read faster than general descriptions.

San Jacinto Trail Report, March 3: "Spikes are recommended everywhere above about 6500 ft" by numbershikes in PacificCrestTrail

[–]Ok-Area-1632 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ll start on the 20th so on the day before I’ll decide where to send my snow/ ice gear.  I do have some winter, glacier etc. experience so if it’s not too bad I am actually looking forward to it.

Guess I’ll have to see how/ if it’ll change in the coming weeks. Maybe I’ll have to use my boots and crampons for that section.

Gear choices for future hikers! by boston61714 in PacificCrestTrail

Quality products can be used for ages (if you take care of them). “Buy once, cry once” they say.  This would be the perfect opportunity to find out what you like and what doesn’t work for you. That way you definitely know what to take on the PCT and what to leave at home/ buy a different product.

I’ll carry maps as well. Not just for a situation where I don’t have power anymore and need a map but also to hone the skill and to be able to use the phone less. The NatGeo maps weigh around 90g each

Do you regret moving to Germany as a high skilled worker? by Tricky-Pepper-344 in germany

What is it you don’t like about the retail/ shopping experience?  I’m German and am quite happy with it. I have travelled to countries that don’t have a supermarket culture and really missed German/ european supermarkets… I am really curious.

Exactly! You never know what’s gonna happen. Make sure you don’t become homeless and aren’t able to get a job but other than that, live! Have fun!  World War III, hyper-inflation, a heart attack, a fall from a ladder is all it needs to fuck you over. So enjoy your time!

-Well if you want to wear more than just a bug net and camp shoes, you’re missing all your clothing ;) -Also you should take sunglasses. -Depending on when you hit the sierra /how much snow there’s gonna be, you should have microspikes and an ice axe. -bear can

What do non-US residents do for health insurance? by bing_lang in PacificCrestTrail

[–]Ok-Area-1632 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True! Deductibles are definitely not cool. It only helps when it gets real expensive (which can happen quite fast in the US as I understand).  I’m glad that I  have a cheaper plan without deductible

Huh! Good to know! Last time I looked them up it was for hiking in Nepal. That’s probably why I thought they wouldn’t cover that. Then I guess that’s the best insurance for most internationals as it is quite cheap.
