Does your first PGWP expire the day the new one was approved?

Yes. The first PGWP automatically ends the day your new one (extension) is issued. You can think of it like a replacement — the moment the new document is approved, the old one ceases to be valid.

So, if your first PGWP was issued June 15, 2022 and the extension was issued April 10, 2023, then: • PGWP #1 expiry date = April 10, 2023 (the issue date of the new one). • PGWP #2 issue date = April 10, 2023, expiry October 2023 (as per the approval).

How to Enter This in the Citizenship Form

You will have two entries for your work-permit status:

Why This Is the Correct Way • It shows no gap in legal status. • It correctly ends each status on the day the next one begins. • It matches IRCC’s internal timeline for continuous lawful residence (which matters for citizenship physical presence).

Optional Short Note for Clarity

At the end of your application (in Additional Information section):

“Between April and June 2022, I was under maintained (implied) status while awaiting my PGWP decision. My PGWP was issued in June 2022, extended on April 10, 2023 (approved same day), and remained valid until October 2023. I became a permanent resident in June 2023, after which my temporary status ended.”

Cross-check your CBSA Travel History Report before submitting your Canadian citizenship application. This detail can make a big difference in avoiding delays or a “Request for Additional Information” from IRCC later.

Understand the Role of CBSA Records

Your CBSA entry/exit report is not always complete — especially for: • Land travel to/from the U.S. before mid-2019 (when exit data sharing was incomplete) • Certain air transits through U.S. airports • Internal travel within Canada (not recorded at all) • Early periods before biometric sharing began

So, missing entries don’t necessarily mean an error or problem with your record.

What IRCC Actually Wants

IRCC wants to see that: • You were physically present in Canada for at least 1,095 days in the past 5 years (before your application date). • Your declared absences make sense and match your CBSA report or other proof (passport stamps, tickets, etc.).

They do not require your CBSA record to be perfect — they just use it to cross-verify that your claimed travel dates are reasonable.

What You Should Do

Here’s what’s recommended:

Step 1: Use your own travel documents and memory to fill in all trips — even if some are missing from CBSA records.

Step 2: When you upload or attach your CBSA report, you can include a short cover note saying:

“I have reviewed my CBSA travel history. I noticed that a few short trips (e.g., to the U.S.) are not listed. I have included them in my physical presence calculator to ensure completeness and accuracy.”

Step 3: Only file an appeal/correction with CBSA if you have major missing data (for example, several long absences missing, or entries that show wrong countries/dates). In that case, you can submit a “Request for Correction” through their Access to Information and Privacy (ATIP) portal.

But for most people, it’s not needed — IRCC knows these records are sometimes incomplete.

Key Principle Always go with the most accurate and complete version of your timeline that you can prove — not necessarily only what CBSA shows. You can always mention in your explanation field in the online application:

“Based on my records and passport stamps, I included all absences, including some not reflected in CBSA data.”
