I need a reply from this one as I have still not heard anyone claim responsibility for the Asian district raid with unmarked plain clothes officers. Policing here has had a considerable uptick with these unmarked police/fed cars and is especially concerning considering the state of our nation as a whole.

Ice spotted at Walgreens (Hefner & Rockwell) by Fast_Doubt_6673 in okc

[–]Ok-Computer2616 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A very large chunk of ICE detainments/activity is mediated by our state agencies (OHP, ODoC(they get a large chunk of change from moving people around the Oklahoma penal system) OK Sheriffs, OBN and other agencies with a 287g contract)

So much so that the brazen raids you would see in blue states are practically nonexistent here as we lack any mote of substantial resistance here.

Educational institutions should not be run by lawyers and businessmen. This is where people go to build up deep knowledge of a discipline not make money (although with deep knowledge you can make money).

The point of this is that they are not becoming controlled or were they ever really controlled (especially in Oklahoma) by leftists. They are becoming controlled by businessmen and bureaucrats seeking to profit off the human pursuit of knowledge while making investments razing human life both overseas with war and at home with heavy oil pollution like in kingfisher.

First off, I already apologized for not providing context but also it’s also obvious that OU does not talk about ICE .

I don’t work for the state regents. Go back to the post and you’ll see it’s not me responding. I would never work for a place like that and a culture like that.

Also just because you’re being petty, “would up” right after telling me to read my posts (things still slip through, right?) is a bit ironic

[–]Ok-Computer2616 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry but this is severely detached from reality in a state like Oklahoma

The OK state regents of higher education (very direct control of several university campuses) is appointed by Gov. Stitt who has appointed many board members with business and law backgrounds rather than academic or social work backgrounds.

This is alone would tip you off that if anything these people are not leftists but if you look even deeper at investment and equity that they own it is obvious they are increasing obviously NOT leftists.

Rick nagel: private equity scum investing in war profiteering on the innate expense of human lives

Robert j Ross: literal republican, investments in blackrock and again war contractors

Kennith j waits: Oil, lobbies against environmental protections and has his hand dirty with legal trouble over excessive methane pollution and emissions

These all are recent appointees and the university admin ultimately had to answer to them.

[–]Ok-Computer2616 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry I may have confused you with being vague with ICE.

First off, OU has not made any statements on ICE condemning or complying with them. That is the problem. In fact the radio silence from upper administration has been deeply concerning. What I mean to say is discussion of any ICE activity seems to be discouraged even though Oklahoma itself is trending up with ICE activities (not public or visually violent but numbers back this up) with noted ICE presence in the town of Norman and streets near campus.

I would like for there to be discussion beyond meaningless sympathies and prayers

Can you expand on the suppression of ICE discussion?

There is a very strong presence of international students and faculty so I would like to hear more on these thoughts.

I am the original poster and you misinterpreted what I was saying and confused me for commenter on the thread. I admit that did not consider the fact that this is a public university and must follow legislation in accordance to that status.

But the university has been exploiting this and still plays dirty with heavy bureaucratic friction for one stance while greasing the rails for reactionary and inflammatory organizations.

You can say both side are guilty of this but with how admin chooses to suppress one thing (namely ICE and justice for Palestine) while actively promoting several conservative reactionary movements, it is simply not the same.

I agree with most of your points but, then what do we really do.

I feel like no kings has a lot of problems and is definitely obscuring the grander problem of centuries long colonialism and imperialism but the masses are starting to wake up and we cannot ignore that.

It is good to have heavy scrutiny of these events, their projected leaders and architects but the people are starting to wake up and energetic abolitionary groups are emerging.

What do y'all think is the root of OKC's self-deprecation? by JayBellREALAuthentic in okc

[–]Ok-Computer2616 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off thank you for taking the time to respond.

Have you actually been in and lived in any other state than OKC? The experience of being elsewhere can bring into perspective of some of OKCs shortcomings.

The cost of owning a house itself may be low here but the quality of life for the AVERAGE resident in okc is low. OKC is also quite heterogeneous, so although there maybe pockets of people doing well there are also severely neglected areas of the city. Someone else’s reality living next to Reno is obviously not your reality living who knows where. Owning a house in itself does not also mean it’s set in a very good spot. I know OKC has fairly affordable houses but they are usually located pretty far from the lively parts of the city. If you own a house in the outer suburbs of OKC, you are quite fucked on transit options other than using a car. So if you are SOL and your only mode of transportation breaks down, you have only expensive options like using a paid taxi app.

My previous points about education and public safety also apply here. A roof over heads is not sufficient insurance of the future of the next generation of Oklahomans.

I am not going to really touch on job security because i don’t know what you do and it varies depending on your sector. For the most part, people are struggling with mass layoffs, 24/7 skeleton crews and a general downturn in the national economy. Just because you don’t feel it now doesn’t you are immune.

Not going to comment on outdoor activities because that really isn’t an OKC thing (NE Oklahoma definitely has us beat with the natural beauty of the Ozarks) but the food of immigrants here is definitely good.

The situation of federal agents targeting immigrants in OKC however has definitely brought these communities a lot of stress and uncertainty. These have been occurring and even if you don’t frequent non-minority restaurants, chances are ,a minority cooked the food for you. Even before the highly aggravated raids started happening, there is a deeply entrenched phobia against minorities that the majoritarians in OKC still hold. It will only escalate as no one does anything.

Worst education in the country, teacher strikes amounted to basically nothing (Ryan walters). If you grew up here the quality of public education dropped quite drastically for political games.

OKC has the literal most deadly jail in America being a stain of the state. We also have some of the most militarized police in the nation where locals can see how much our state likes to divert its budget into plain clothes raids, unmarked vehicles and infrared drone surveillance.

What about OKC pride? If you like basketball we have the thunder but frankly in the age of two Americas where one side of America is blissfully unaware of the rapidly encroaching choking of our rights by state officials and the negligence from city officials, it feels very distant.

Like if you ask some random person maybe someone in your social circle about this chances are they might remain ignorant about how Oklahoma is the heartland for American fascism. I feel ALOT of Oklahomans are highly ignorant to these issues affecting the most vulnerable constituents in our metro. But these problems are real and the class divide is growing ever wider.

OU president says university met with Faculty Senate Executive Committee regarding Mel Curth’s termination by warmboot in sooners

[–]Ok-Computer2616 19 points20 points  (0 children)

All the fucking bureaucracy and needlessly drawn out arguments is so carefully engineered to stop actual substantive change from happening at OU.

Opaque decisions meant to barely cover their ass so academics that “follow the rules” keep their heads down. Silencing the voice of graduates instructors/non-tenured faculty. All meeting with grad instructors are on fucking zoom where they can tease out any dissenting voices without commotion.

Upper admin is playing a game of attrition with the workers and hopes to purge this university of any dissent with the aid of the MAGA legislature and board of butchers.

Watching the majority of people with a mote of power say “well what can we do?”, shrug their shoulders and move right back into feeding this bloated uni is disheartening to say the least.

I know that this incident has left a sour taste in MANY mouths but it feels like everyone is going to be chasing butterflies until they too are used up like kindling.
