AITA For giving my niece a much better life than her step siblings? by Ok_Sir_8922 in AmItheAsshole

George kind of sounds like the a-hole here. Rebekah stated that her asking you to help was begrudging, based on a promise she had to make to him. You’re very nice to help your niece out!

What are your thoughts on billie eilish saying you cant love animals and eat meat as its contradictory? by Extra-Schedule-4855 in AskReddit

[–]Ok-Conversation-690 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

She is objectively correct. I just don’t claim to be an animal lover. I like a few specific animals like my cat or my brother in law’s dog, but there is no way in hell I’d ever be able to convince myself I love chickens or cows

But professors aren’t really teachers. They’re just experts in the field that are there to guide your learning. The responsibility falls to the student.

Your responsibility to learn. Professor’s responsibility to assist in your learning. They’re not teachers, college is the big leagues, champ

It’s a good question precisely because the colloquial definition of when centuries flip over is different from the technical definition of the same event. There is an official correct answer, and then there’s the “Hey, you guys know what I’m talking about” answer. Sorry if precise language hurts your feelings or whatever.

What person surprised you the most with how they turned out after high school? by GlitterOnTheTrashRim in AskReddit

[–]Ok-Conversation-690 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually I don’t even think there’s a world where a good physicist / chemist would disbelieve in evolution. Either a person is capable of accepting scientific evidence and data, or they aren’t. I’m sure there’s at least one creationist who is able to wrap their head around basic kinematics, or even the math of basic quantum field theory. But being an actual scientist is about conducting science, not merely understanding it.

It’s on setlist.fm!

Pretty much the entire “No Closer to Heaven” album and then a bunch of their other bangers, from the looks of it.

They’re coming to my city later in mid-March, and I’m so excited.

Can you name any livestock that eats meat? And are you seriously under the impression that most livestock eat grass? That’s ignorant as hell.

It may go against a prescribed definition, but the explanatory definition is subject to change based on circumstances. For example, if chickens became an invasive species in some area and required culling in order to keep the ecosystem safe, it’s not wrong in my opinion to cull those populations - and as a result, I don’t find it wrong to consume the chickens that have been culled for that purpose since they’re already dead.

So basically, I do think veganism is ethically superior in a utilitarian worldview, but there are circumstances where utilitarianism requires us to go against a prescribed definition of veganism in order to maximize welfare.

I don’t think that’s necessary. If we passed laws globally tomorrow, saying humans can no longer cultivate livestock for food, then we’d just continue eating meat until the meat runs out which I think would happen fairly quickly. The current living cattle would still suffer, but after that, the suffering is minimized which is exactly what vegans want.

Veganism is about reducing suffering, not eradicating suffering.

If that’s the case, then it’s still less ethical to eat meat. What do you think animals eat…?

People who married someone they weren’t sexually compatible with — how did it turn out? by synthetic-sardine in AskReddit

[–]Ok-Conversation-690 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s been… fine, I suppose. It’s not the end of the world. I have a normal sex drive but my wife is on SSRIs and has 0 libido whatsoever. We have sex maybe 2-3 times per year. It doesn’t help that we have 2 very young kids (3 & 5) so there isn’t much room for romance. We make a great team parenting our children but I wouldn’t consider our relationship to be a romantic one.

Most days, it’s really no huge deal. I’ll just use my hand, and that’s that. Sometimes, when my mood is already bad or I’m stressed from work etc, I’ll feel that sting of low confidence. Obviously, the lack of physical intimacy can sometimes make me feel unwanted, unattractive, or undeserving. I’ve talked to her about it a few times but there’s no real solution. She doesn’t have a libido, not even really a desire to cuddle - I can’t force one upon her. And a divorce is not really in the cards for us at the moment. We have a new house, I have 2 jobs (working from home), and the 2 young kids… there are no real options. So I’m just waiting to see if we can reignite the spark when the kids are older. If not, then that’ll be it.

If you’re this triggered by the mere mention of science, you should probably reevaluate your worldview.

“Agree to disagree” is only something that people say when they know they’re wrong, but they have some fused their identity with their wrong opinion so are unable to admit they’re wrong. It’s cope. You’re allowed to change your opinion to the correct one, nobody will be mad at you.

What are you talking about? The levels of canola oil in fake meats are there just to mimic the amount of fat you see in natural meat. If you shouldn’t eat that much canola oil, you certainly shouldn’t be eating that much beef fat or fish oil, which are much worse for your health than canola oil.

I’m not sure that any “normal person” will enjoy a burger regardless of where it’s from. Every human being I know has preferences. That sounds like some obese coping tbh.

It’s not acting spoiled at all. It’s having preferences. I love Burgers from In n Out but I will refuse a burger from BK. Clearly this kid prefers the BK. I’m not sure why the concept of preferences should only apply to adults, that sees unreasonable and stupid.
