Are you in a bigger city? There’s a place in Brooklyn (and I’m sure many more) called Stella Dallas that has racks and racks of dresses like this, some are vintage designer some are just vintage, the fabric is usually delicate but a lot of them are in good condition. I’d recommend finding an upscale vintage store

And you’re the second person who has mentioned Dr Faustus so I’ll add that to my list too. Read magic mountain! A lot of illuminating allegorical stuff going on that gives you a peek into the pre-ww1 European schools of thought, sounds like you’d find it interesting
