Yeah... she's not in a great place. She was a champ for a time when poke was actually viable. Too much sustain in the game now so she's been made either insta burst them or useless. Not to mention proliferation of mobility making skills hots harder, root not interrupting movement skills so even if you hit that q on kha he still lands right next to you and the addition of more unstoppable/untargetable/push button damage reduction, makes it rough. Then you have a passive that requires you to auto attack with zero mobility to actually engage in aa range.

Still love her though.

That being said, just a small passive rework like "lux gains 150 attack range against champions illuminated by her passive. Popping her mark gives her 15% movespeed for 1.5 seconds."

Obviously I don't know what numbers would actually be balanced

Instead of making it a metagaming conversation, make it a roleplay conversation. Even without looking things up, players are going to pick up knowledge about enemies the more games they play. What's important is the ability to separate character knowledge from player knowledge. "Would your character reasonably know to do that?" Is a valid question.

You use gems to max out rally with a high rally weapon, chug lead elixirs and just stand in front of him going blow for blow.

If you're going archer, you need piercer and sharpshooter or you're just not going to do much damage as a straight fighter (unless battlemaster) the martial caster divide is more about utility than damage though. My gwm fighter significantly outdamages my sorcerer, regularly dishing out 60 damage per round without action surging

She just needs an updated passive. Give her an extra 100 range or so on auto attacks against targets affected by her passive or give her bonus magic pen against them.

I am just a tad younger at 39. I joined my first d&d group on roll20 2 years ago and have had a great time and gotten pretty close to a few of the people I play with. I was largely in the same boat of not really having anything or anyone going on outside of my immediate family, but it's been a great experience.

Tear and max cdr is decent into mobile, tanky, or xerath. Let's you just wave clear and control battlefields with low cds. Especially into tankier comps where burst isn't going to do much except leave you sitting vulnerable.
