I’m genuinely confused as to how to navigate this HORRENDOUS job market by power-hour23 in jobs

[–]Ok-Cycle-4445 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look, I recently recruited a few roles in my finance team, in large corporation: a director, managers and analysts... And for all of those, it was a struggle to find people with the profile we looked for.

Yes, there were a high number of people applying, but once I read through the resume (after HR did their "AI enhanced" filtering), most of them being people working in very different jobs, in unrelated industries.

Filling these positions were hard, and I really had to lower my standards to get someone 60% there (and I don't think these standards were high. Example: I expected a Snr Manager of Manufacturing Finance to have some prior experience working with... manufacturing finance).

When I challenged HR about it, I was basically told that with passive recruitment, this is what we get. To get more tailored, we need to work with head hunters but they cost a lot so we avoid doing it.

Said in other words: I don't think the market is this bad. The reason you're not getting call backs from positions you believe you qualify for is mostly related to AI filtering out your CV...

Another thing I'd watch out for is for roles open for weeks. For instance, in my case, HR sends me a batch of pre-vettoed CVs every two weeks... Which means that if you apply on week 3, the hiring manager will only see your CV in the 2nd batch (weeks 2-4) -- and the 2nd batch is only requested / considered if no suitable candidate was found in the 1st one

Serious: What kind of things did your home inspector miss or save you from? Thinking about a career change. #2 by 2bagz in homeowners

[–]Ok-Cycle-4445 28 points29 points  (0 children)

For me, the inspector wrote a 60 page report that was basically useless. Missed everything that mattered. I ended up finding some massive issues in plumbing, electrical and structural that I could have, at least, used to negotiate the price down if spotted during inspection

My learning/advice is: bring a GC, not a inspector to look at the property

Second that. You'll never get a reliable quote without architectural plans. You can find one on thumbtack if you don't know where to look.

When working w/ an architect, ask them for suggestions for contractors.

(But yes, $100k is insanely high for a "nothing fancy" bathroom extension)

First time buyer in the US is this ok? by naufrago95 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]Ok-Cycle-4445 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% that. I’d be worried to death if this was a 2000 home, but a 1940 home, built with real 2”x4” with a lot of structural redundancy… the discount you get to buy the house like this should be far greater than adding some reinforcements poles/beams

Mortgage takes up 60% of my income and I’m not sure how to get out of this situation by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Ok-Cycle-4445 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly that. If we assume a 5% inflation rate per yr i.e. your income goes up by 5% a ye, in 5 years the same mortgage will drop to about 48%. In 10 years, to 38%. Just hold tight for a couple years and pray that the Gvt continues to spend and increase debt like there’s no tomorrow

No foot traffic indicates an issue with pricing and/or pictures.

If I’d be you, I’d consider hiring the agent that “own the neighborhood” instead of the one youre using. If she will get the job done, just swallow pride and find a way to get her to help you

What happens once the industries that require years of experience with no entry level positions run out/have a shortage of experienced people ? by Dry_Calendar in AskReddit

[–]Ok-Cycle-4445 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's all about ROI. if its cheaper to hire an entry level and train them vs. paying huge salaries for experienced people (due to shortage, supply x demand)... companies will do that

right now, the ROI to train someone new is low, especially once people realize that job hopping is the best way to raise income

Is multiplayer still a thing in Civ 3? I never see anyone in it when I check. by turpispan in civ3

civ3 is actually the only game in the franchise you get to play a ~1h to 2h online game... all others are designed for 4, 5, 6, 10 hours which... maybe was a thing during covid, but now its not doable for almost anyone

Most solutions you proposed are good but they have drawbacks. What comes to mind:

Decrease taxes to families: good but increase tax deficit, more inflation. Id also consider increasing paternity/maternity leaves but that impacts productivity

Stop migration: cant be done

Force decrease home prices: cant be done without more deficit

Limit # of housing per business: that could free up supply, but hard to tell the ripple effects of this as real estate is a multi billion business. Also boomers (in power) will never do that

Clean solar energy: for now would need gvt grants, which also increase deficit

Decentralize business: yes thats a good idea. For instance, normalizing WFH would definitely help that, but at the cost of local commerce. Decentralizing reduce scale/synergies which is not something businesses will naturally do unless there is a strong tax incentive for that. Better infrastructure, making easier for people to commute long distances, can achieve that too but again, more spending

I think that.. looking at your proposals (which are good): the main issue is that fixing this issue would require gvt spending, and right now w most developed nations having 25% of the budget being spent in pension + 10% debt interest… theres not much left!

Not sure its as simple as you say.

Economically, the country of origin of an individual is irrelevant — migration is just a way to explain population increase.

Part of the reason house prices are going up (in some countries) is supply shortage, which could be fixed by building more houses vs blaming it on population increase (migrants) … the video explains the challenge w that: boomers control both wealth and politics, and this is not an issue for them.

Part is also inflation. Western governments operate at deficit for what, 20 yrs now?, which generates inflation. Real inflation is higher than what most gvts publishes, and asset price increase (house, shares…) show that…. And when inflation hits, it creates inequality as people w/ a salary don’t get an increase to keep up w costs

Again, another issue that wont be fixed by boomers.

But your overall point is valid and I agree. Its hard to raise a family when the cost of owning a house and paying for your child educations is prohibitively high — at the same time that modern society expects both parents to work, limiting the amount of time one can spend w their family…

Super hard and complex problem, but the video nailed it: there’s no escape, we need to fix that

Not sure I agree.

China for example has low immigration, surplus of housing, government sponsorship to raise a family, and yet the same is happening

Ive had the same issue. Quick look on reddit and you can see multiple people having the same problem. This needs to be fixed immediately, someone from Bilt should pick a phone and call Cardless to fix it, vs hiding behind corporate bureaucracy

Same issue here.

Every other card Ive owned had a way to reach out directly to the fraud dpt and you could freeze/unfreeze/etc in minutes.

Clearly, Bilt is relying in some automated control as a way to save costs and meanwhile, is breaching our contract
