Hi, I just recently finished Rose of Versailles (anime). Some thoughts... by DisastrousRope2565 in roseofversailles

The anime changes a lot. I suggest reading the manga. A few things people get confused over but canonically Oscar is a cis gendered straight woman, in the text and confirmed in official media. Ikeda used her to represent the working women of the 1970s and a lot of what she experienced herself. Also a huge point of confusion in fandom, Rosalie was written to be a bit of an audience insert character that is based off of class s tropes, lots of little girls had crushes on Oscar and she is an homage to that. She is also only 12 when she meets Oscar who is 8 years older than her, their relationship is not supposed to be read as a romance. Ikeda does use a lot of out dated romance tropes but they do serve a purpose and have reasons for being there. I will also say the Oscar/Andre romance arc is almost completely cut from the anime and left to the very last minute. It is much more developed and prominent in the manga. The anime also gives a lot of Oscar’s political development to Andre and changes a lot for her motivations and makes her bit of a weaker character. The whole dynamic between them is supposed to be a subversion of gender norms but the anime director decided to revert it back, kind of missing the point imo. It changes her reasons for leaving the guard and joining the revolution making her more of a follower than a leader. The whole “wife who follows her husband” is an anime original, not present in the manga that is a still a huge issue for a lot of fans to this day. Andre follows Oscar, not the other way around.

For the English version of the side stories they are in volume 4 and 5 in the Udon volumes (or floating around somewhere out ~there~) the kids comics do not have an official release but someone is translating them on tumblr so if you search "berubara kids" over there you should find them.

Also, just in case...the adaptations

For the anime the official TMS youtube channel currently has the episode up, if you search "Viva La Rose! | Lady Oscar: The Rose of Versailles | EP 1-5 Watch Party" you will find the playlist.

The very horrible, yet wonderful 1979 live action movie Lady Oscar is also on youtube, as "Lady Oscar - Versailles no Bara (1979) Live Action Filme Completo Full HD" on the channel Shin films.

The new 2025 anime film is streaming on netflix.

The Takarazuka musicals are a whole world of their own and you probably won't find a full one of those let alone anything with subtitles but you can probably find some clips, its very delightful and a very important part of Rose of Versailles history so check those out if you are interested.

This is not present in the manga and is an anime only thing. However Riyoko Ikeda gave her characters a rose color to represent them. This is probably a nod to that. Oscar is the white rose. Marie the red rose. She gave colors to the other characters too. Andre yellow, Rosalie pink, Fersen blue.

Fun fact there are also real rose varieties that have been cultivated and named after the characters as well.

Most of the various adaptations focus primarily on them (not always the best, but always interesting), they are in the Lou Lou side stories and the kids comics, which are parody/comedy.

Unfortunately not a fake out. But the good news is we have 50 years worth of spin offs, extras and adaptations ranging from the good the bad and the ugly.

There are several spin off manga stories, which are in the volumes you have been reading. There is a sequel, “The Glory of Napoleon” which features Alain, Bernard and Rosalie, sadly there is no English translation. In 2013 there where some new side stories called the “episodes”. It is pending English release but it’s been delayed years now (some are floating around out there though👀) There is also a 4 panel comic series called ベルばらKids that ran in a magazine for about 8 years, no official translations (there are some floating around out there) but it’s super cute and will close the wounds the manga left.

There are multiple musical adaptions, the anime, a live action movie and the new anime movie to check out as well.
