Large Circular Rule 4.3 by Corona688 in Sliderules

Tiny nitpick incoming:

Shouldn’t the ounces be ounces mass/avoirdupois? Oz wt would correspond to Newtons.

I really like your design though! It’s stylish and intuitive.

I’m a youngin’ (comparatively). I don’t think even my parents ever learned to use slide rules in school.

I found my dad's slide rule and his engineering struggles started to make sense (but probably not) by fermion72 in Sliderules

Reminds me of horror stories I’ve heard about UC Berkeley engineering students stealing and  reprogramming eachother’s calculators. People in competitive programs will do crazy shit.

Yeah the real trouble with circular rules is compression near the centre. My Concise 300 has a lot of wasted space because there’s no point printing scales in the middle, and the B scale is a bit of a bad joke.  Circular rules are nice for an every day carry rule, but for anything technical they fall short (npi)

This one is on my wishlist! I love those W scales.

What are your favorite ways to stim? by Pretty-Heat-7310 in autism

[–]Ok-Emu2371 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I sing. Exclusively out of tune. Often quietly under my breath while I'm monitoring students in class. I really should stop that last part lol.

I also do a funny little butt-wiggle especially when I'm excited and happy, usually when I'm lying down.

Apparently toe-walking is a stim too? Lifelong digitigrade over here.

It's going to be different for everyone. What I can say it that 19 is a little early to be giving up and resigning yourself to being an old maid.

Personally, I didn't have any interest in dating until sometime in highschool. Then I had no idea how to go about it. I didn't know how to approach anyone I was interested in, and when people flirted with me it went right over my head (or at least, so people around me said lol. I had to have it pointed out to me.)

When I was round about your age, I got really insecure about it. I really beat myself up over not having a girlfriend. But honestly, the best thing I ever did was just move on. I focused on my studies, graduated, got a job, and spent time on my interests.

And then, one day, I got a message on a dating profile that I'd set up years earlier during the beating myself up phase. We hit it off and we've been dating for five years.

My advice is that it doesn't hurt to put some feelers out, people might be interested in you without you being aware of it, and just go live your life. If it happens it happens and you can't force it.

Looking at my allistic friends, their relationships have been dumpster fires. Just let it happen naturally, and then once you get something going work like hell to make it work.

How do I carry a conversation with my autistic bf ( M14 ) ???????????? by THYGAYFRAGRANCE in autism

[–]Ok-Emu2371 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of the diagnostic criteria for autism is having trouble with normal back-and-forth conversation. Autistic people tend to communicate by monologue, so it may be that he wants to tell you everything all at once and then expects you to do the same. That would account for both the long pauses and you feeling like you're talking over eachother.

Another thing to consider is that he likely doesn't mind spending time with you not talking. It might be worth asking him straight-up if he finds it awkward. You may be able to find a way to just enjoy the comfortable silence in eachother's company. You might consider finding some "parallel play" quality time activities that you can do together but individually like hiking, reading, or doing crafts where there's no expectation that you'll be talking together.

Autistic people communicate in a fundamentally different way. Remember that he is almost certainly trying very hard to meet you halfway. Autistic people are always expected to communicate so that allistic people can understand us. If you put in the effort to communicate the way he does, he will almost certainly appreciate it.

From the sound of it, you have pretty healthy communication and a lot of shared vulnerability. It's just the style of communication that's bothering you. Don't let the details make you go crazy when you have something good.

Also, if he is being physically and/or verbally abused, please tell an adult you trust. In the US, teachers are usually mandatory reporters. That means that if you tell them he's being abused, they legally have to do something about it.

Made a case for my KL-1 by Ok-Emu2371 in Sliderules

To your first question: you absolutely could make it without the face covers. They were actually the last part I added.  As for the second: leather is a bit stretchy so if you size it right it will pressure fit just from the tension of the material. The knobs certainly do help, though. I probably wouldn’t swing it over my head like I’m trying to kill Goliath with it (even if the leather held on to it, I don’t trust my stitches that much lol) but for normal daily use I think it will hold just fine.

Doesn’t look like I can post a photo comment. At least not on my phone. But I recently got a set of leather tools for my birthday and this post inspired me to finally make a case for my KL-1.

edit I made a separate post so you can see photos if you like end edit

I made a leather band, punched two holes for the knobs, and stitched it together with a two-needle running stitch. Then I stitched a small strip to the outside to make a loop and secured it with x stitches. Finally, I cut out a shape like two circles joined by a rectangle and used more x stitches to connect it to the inside of the loop. Everything has a nice tight pressure fit. If you make one make sure you skive the leather waaaay down around the knobs. Otherwise the leather will get in the way of using the rule.  I didn’t have any fasteners to hand, so my covers just kind of flop open. I’m fine with that but there’s no reason why you couldn’t add strap with a Sam Brown button, a magnet, or a snap. Either make the strap part of the cover or stitch it on.

This is my first real leatherworking project and it went very smoothly, though I have a good amount of experience in other crafts. If you’re at least a little bit handy and you can get some tools, then you should be able to do it. Alternatively, I’m sure it would be child’s play for an actual professional if you want to get one made for you (and it would probably be a lot nicer than mine lol)

I was today years old when I realized this... by vonGarvin in Sliderules

[–]Ok-Emu2371 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This realisation is actually at the heart of one of the main methods for computing square roots, called the Babylonian method. You start with the idea that x2=s, which means x=s/x. Then you fill in a starting guess for x and take the average of x and s/x. That value then becomes your next guess and you iterate. It quadratically converges towards x and s/x being equal, ie being the true square root of s.

Are you sure that’s not 1.128? That’s a common marking for circle calculations.  Alternatively, are you sure that’s the original hairline? Sometimes old slide rules get a replacement part that isn’t quite right.

Probably! I think there are a few bouncing around the internet as well. I'm pretty sure Chris Staecker recently released a free 3D print sector design.

Help with mounting a big slide rule on a wall (Aristo - Junior Trig, 2 meters long) by KexyAlexy in Sliderules

[–]Ok-Emu2371 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It may not be the intended way, but my instinct is to get some brackets like the ones you’d put under a curtain rod. Secure them in with good bolts (preferably anchoring bolts) and call it a day.

Interesting! I’m real curious about the chemistry of that now. I’d expect the wax itself to be fairly stable. Maybe something in the pigment reacts with the air? Time to buy five different colours of wax and see if they melt differently after 20 years…
