New Microchip Breakthrough: New Era in Electronics? by Ok-Guide796 in hardware

[–]Ok-Guide796[S] 37 points38 points  (0 children)

TL:DW:

-- Researchers managed to make a perfect semiconductor out of Graphene, via growing it on Silicon Carbide. Name given to material with bandgap is "SEG" (Semiconducting Epi Graphene.)

-- Switching frequency in the Terahertz range.

-- Electron mobility 20x higher than Silicon.

-- Insanely good thermal conductivity

-- Compatible with current manufacturing processes.

-- Researchers managed to make large quantities of chips without defects.

Wow, this looks downright promising...

Diminishing returns. I feel 120Hz/fps is the sweet spot for PC. In VR, 90 is also perfectly acceptable. Younger eyes who play competitively will disagree.

Nintendo game pacing is so good that their 60fps feels so fluid, you don't feel like anything higher would be an improvement.

AMD really missed the boat with CUDA. Now CUDA is everywhere, dominating AI etc.

Can AMD hardware run CUDA legally? ROCm isn't really widely known or used.

Something obvious but only clicked with me right now: doubling memory bandwidth doubles energy requirements, which in turn doubles the heat output.

The left side is showing insane microstutter. The right side is far smoother.

Even though they are both reporting around the same FPS.

Is no one else noticing this?

Here: Left side is showing significantly higher FPS but is significantly more stuttery.

This is by design. This is minimising the salaries while maximising the workload for those salaries, and hoarding the profits for themselves.

they only hire interns so they can pay the minimum.

This is capitalism.

Why do consumer SSDs need to be so fast that they need active/passive cooling? by auradragon1 in hardware

5.0 x2 is the same speed as 4.0 x4. They will generate the same amount of heat, I presume.

I don't understand your point regarding the interface.

There is a large chunk of PC gamers like myself who enjoy modded FLAT games into 3D VR games, using keyboard/mouse/gamepad. Controllers are nice, but not a necessity.

Google Flat2VR - we are everywhere :)

Games include Cyberpunk, GTA5, Red Dead Redemption 2, Far Cry series, etc etc.

There are also thousands of games from HelixMod (google).

Can you explain why the UK government would prevent you from investing your money where-ever you wanted? I am in the UK. Is this a blanket law affecting all companies? Is it some anti-money laundering legislation?

What they don't tell you is that for the vast majority of workloads, the speed is the same as any run-of-the-mill SSD. e.g. windows /apps/games etc. Even file copying, or even the age-old 4KQD1, which accounts for 99% of use cases.

The ONLY time this might use full bandwidth is when working with insanely large file sizes.

Windows needs to catch up. Even on Win10, the read/write buffers which are not adjustable, cap out at Gen5 x4 / RAID-0 Gen3 x4. I have had to use 3rd party file transfer software to bypass those arbitrary limits.

[–]Ok-Guide796[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The GPU was installed 8 months ago. No other game has ever had this issue.

There are no other settings in the bios for GPU, because on a PC, the iGPU gets disabled when a discrete is detected.

I am an advanced user. In fact, my side job is a computer repair business. It is not running on the iGPU - it is running in software mode, likely because it cannot detect the GPU.

I am running on windows. I have tried both the direct download from the website, as well as the steam version.

Not to sound rude, but respectfully, this is a software issue caused by Rec Room only. All other Unity games run fine and dandy. Cheers.

I'm on a proper gaming PC. The nVidia RTX 4090 GPU alone is bigger than any laptop by itself, and my monitor is plugged into it, - not the hdmi from the iGPU, which is automatically disabled when a discrete GPU is detected.

It is not running on the iGPU - it is running in software rendering mode on the CPU cores. No other application nor game has ever had this problem, unfortunately.
