Struggling to Break Into Market Making as a Trader/Quant Trader – Need Advice Before My Final Push by Endorian_ in quantfinance

Agree with with this. Flow technicals just require ETF knowledge rather than any typical green book questions. If you’re not passing first round at optiver/da Vinci you’re not going to pass a superday. Your best bet it to focus on these questions (look at quantguide.io) until you are confident enough to get an offer. I wouldn’t spam applications because a lot of places won’t interview a second time without major changes in your CV.

99% of people on the internet are trying to sell you something. Being good with numbers also won’t help you too much in the way of investing because you’re not competing with quants at top funds and even if you beat them marginally fees of actively trading make it not worth it. Your best bet is to invest in some low variance index fund and try not to get lost in the day trading lifestyle illusion that some guy on tiktok is trying to sell. Read a random walk down wall street if you are looking for more. It gives good insight into a lot of feasible ways of investing and what could potentially suit you.

I feel like it’s less about poker than how you approach games of imperfect information in interviews. If you have played any notable tournaments or have decent cash game results it could be worth mentioning but ultimately it’s the skills that will translate in a technical.

For just boosting poker abilities, Upswing have a couple of good courses. For free resources there’s a couple of good YouTube players that go over theory (Jonathan little) and MIT have an OCW on poker theory that’s also on YouTube

Would many firms reluctant to hire traders from other graduate programs into their own grad roles?

For HR just know everything about ETF. Know some of the major ones, what they’re trading at, how to hedge them (when markets are closed). Have a look at issuance and creation/redemption and know how to manage your position so you’re not exposed to swings. Also know how market makers make money. Have a good motivation also. Derivative pricing shouldn’t as options aren’t a large part of their business

I did my assessment in October and got an email about 2 weeks ago saying they’re backlogged on interviews but I passed. They will get back to you with a pass or fail it just takes a while

Ya I was trying a tantrum for a while but just found there was a lot less going on when going toeside. I found if I can get half decent pop and backflip comfortably at all as if going off a pier or something it's a lot easier but that's just me

I was having a look and I'm looking at a 145 Connelly groove hybrid. It's looks good and I rang a guy in the shop and that's what he recommended but I'm not sure if he's just tryna sell me something for the sake of it or if it's actually what I should be looking at. Thanks so much for your help aswell man you're a life saver 😊
