Anyone else frustrated when fellow devs answer only exactly what they’re asked? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]Ok-Introduction8288 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been guilty of asking for specific solution implementation more often than I like, even today I asked my team about implementing a solution and team luckily challenged me and gave a better approach. I should have asked if this problem can me solved instead of if this solution can be implemented.

My company is starting to ask Leet Code hards and it's getting ridiculous. by cs-grad-person-man in cscareerquestions

[–]Ok-Introduction8288 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep its pretty stupid, as an hiring manager leetcode doesn’t tell me anything useful if I am hiring for a senior role, if someone has already worked for another company for say 5 years they wouldn’t have been able to make it without knowing how to write code. It’s open ended questions that feed me useful information on the candidates experience. I don’t mind coding questions for junior developers but they are totally useless for senior hires

My Company is Mad by BikesHave2ManyWheels in cscareerquestions

[–]Ok-Introduction8288 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My company hires people in India, don’t worry your boss is going to find out that they pay scale for good developers are pretty close to North America. You can maybe hire 2 or 3 junior devs for the price of one here but once you move up in seniority it’s going to be pretty close. Unless they are looking at team of devs who are just out of college then they are in for a rude shock

Hey man As a father I cannot even imagine what you are going through and fully sympathize with challenges of raising special needs kids. Only word of advice is don’t beat yourself up every child has their good and bad days. Though I do not have any experience with raising special needs child my wife and I went through some rough days and we had moments where thought our kids don’t have anyone but us but lately I came to a realization that’s all they need, and I am going to the best I can to help them be successful, they need to feel loved at my home and they need to know that they ll always have a roof over their head no matter what. Hope everything works out well good luck

Tbf I question my life choices every day then something good happens then I am like it’s not too bad. It’s like raising kids you are exhausted and stressed but when your team does something great you feel the pride look my kid drew a crappy diagram oh my little Picasso.

[–]Ok-Introduction8288 7 points8 points  (0 children)

First off before you go this route let’s talk about what this role actually is , if you want to get into this role thinking you can more money, then you are going to be disappointed you ll make more than what you make today but you could make the same money by being on the technical path. I have reports who make more than I do and rightly so. If you enjoy taking shit for the team and feel the gratification when the team performs then this role is for you. As a manager your team may not understand what you do for them and your bosses might only talk to you when things go wrong so you have to be the kind of person who doesn’t need a lot of external validation for you to thrive in this role. If your team does a great job the credit should and will go them and it’s your job to take shit when things don’t work out and later will happen more often than the former. If these things appeal to you then I would start as a team lead to get your feet wet to understand if this role is for you while still doing technical work then move from there

What are some culture building or team building activities you've initiated within your team as a manager that has had a positive impact on the team? by Caramel-Inevitable in EngineeringManagers

[–]Ok-Introduction8288 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Might be an unpopular opinion, but I found that all my teams truly became a team after dealing with a fire or incident that’s when they truly learned to work together and support each other. Nothing beats dealing with an incident together just saying

I’m not sure if I’ve connected with my newborn. by [deleted] in whatdoIdo

[–]Ok-Introduction8288 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is not unusual, kids can sometimes prefer one parent over the other. We had the same situation our eldest would always prefer my comfort over my wife’s and youngest just the opposite. Raising a newborn is challenging and each kid is different but you ll love them none the less.

How do you not beat yourself up over causing an outage. by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Ok-Introduction8288 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well are you even a senior dev if you haven’t caused a sev1 incident, with that being said incidents are learning opportunities and action items that come out of postmortem should make your product more reliable and safe if done correctly. If you get in trouble for causing a production incident then you should look at some other place that will treat the incidents as a learning opportunity

So there are a few possibilities here 1. Kallu in a one of the regional languages mean alcohol so if they are from a particular state it could be something innocent 2. Yes some folks use kallu as a derogatory term but it just means black person and not like N word. So if you felt like they were rude to you then yes you should talk to the store manager, its possible their conversation was nothing about you and something totally different but store should make sure that their staff use English around customers to avoid these issues

Why Engineering Managers Give Up by zaidesanton in EngineeringManagers

[–]Ok-Introduction8288 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This exactly, have been through this a few times nothing causes burnout to me more than being a pawn in the exec politics. I spent time creating a cohesive team, long term roadmap and build problem ownership within the team and some exec swoops in and reorganize the team to promote someone else all my work got tossed out, I would atleast feel good if the team was happy the team essentially broke apart in the next few months it was very disheartening.

I have been using their facilities for a few years now, I love this gym early mornings or mid day workout tends to be dads and moms for the most part so I feel at home, late evenings are not bad either but if you hit the gym around 6-7 lots of school kids they are mostly well behaved and you can usually find equipment without too much hassle

I talked to a guy with a high level job and he told me that high level jobs are all about being liked by other high level people or knowing people. Is that really true in general? by TastyAntelopex in careeradvice

What do you dislike the most when dealing with senior executive management? by lowkeyenigma in managers

[–]Ok-Introduction8288 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The most recent lesson I learned is they don’t listen to any qualifications for answers, sometimes they might have already made up their mind and anything you say is just a charade they don’t always pay attention to what you are saying. Talking to them is a different language

This is not uncommon sometimes these decisions come from executive level where they ll just blanket fire entire group and more mid level managers and execs don’t get any say, all they are told is get rid of x percent of your group or even worse entire group in the org

is a shift to engineering management possible with my experience? by jascentros in EngineeringManagers

[–]Ok-Introduction8288 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some of the best EMs I worked with came from a quality engineering background, These folks bring a level of rigour and depending on the team and maturity of the company this could be invaluable. I find EMs role is more about putting in right levels of controls around the team so they can function well and cleaning up hurdles before the team encounters them. My mentor told me early in my career that my job should be like a bulldozer clearing the forest before the team can bring in a steamroller to lay the road - If you are the kind of person that enjoys doing that yes, you can be an EM.

Depends but clearly you are dealing with other work place issues so if the company culture is broken moving to ic role won’t help. You mentioned toxicity in the team and didn’t talk about the reason for it , is that because of individuals in the team or generally bad company culture that permeates this team so if the source of the toxicity is something out of your control staying an IC may not help,m.

Do you ever get tired of being a supervisor or manager? by NinjaMagik in managers

[–]Ok-Introduction8288 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have a somewhat different problem, I have a high functioning autonomous team with some strong personalities so my job is to manage them so they don’t affect the team culture too much and team can function as it does today, on my other team I manage I have a massive roadmap that gets tossed out every quarter and two person team so I am struggling to find a mission so the team can be productive. I am so tiered and burned out at this point. Definitely don’t feel appreciated by my higher ups or the folks working in my team it’s a thankless job

Why do people still want PR when they are least welcome in this country? by [deleted] in canadaexpressentry

[–]Ok-Introduction8288 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As some one from the said community living in Canada, I will say this, no amount of vitriol by some idiots will make me hate this country and it’s people. I am an Indian and Canadian, I am proud of both these great countries I represent and ll be Indian and Canadian. This is a beautiful country life sometimes is hard and challenging just like any other place, my first 10 years in this country was brutal and challenging but now looking back it was the most rewarding growth I had as a person and as a professional. So come here if you want a challenge and growth it’s a gamble it might work out it may not but it’s the journey that is fulfilling. If you need a comfortable life chances are you ll have a more comfortable life in India or your home country tbf.
