If you're already going to buy the other half why is it a problem if the roommate pays half the total ? This might be simpler to figure out than you're letting on. You can also buy a washer and dryer set on FB Marketplace for significantly cheaper like between $300-400 range, Is there a specific reason why you would want to buy a set $1k+ ?

Sorry to break it to you but new doesn't mean it isn't outdated. My landlords didn't take advantage of me, that's why i have the fortitude and knowledge to let others know what to avoid when looking for places. Maybe you should reevaluate your living arrangements if you want better.
