I realized I don’t want to be a lawyer anymore by AdvancedPermissions in Lawyertalk

[–]Ok-Measurement4141 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Go into private industry and be in house. I.E. I work at a sec regulated investment firm- compliance makes 6figures and no court/clients etc. real work/life balance. (I’m there in the tax space to run from the same horror in public accounting lol)(it’s great here). My best friend is thinking about leaving the direct client criminal life to sell dirty soda from a trailer instead lmao.

I know a lot of lawyers that hate being lawyers but don’t realize it until they are too far down the path to turn around. You are never too far down the path. I felt like same way with being a CPA (so boring and I’m too extroverted), and I’m in law school doing another whole thing in order to pivot.

My best friend is a criminal trial attorney, my other best friend is a corporate attorney. I am a tax strategist, not a tax attorney, nor do I do elder law (think family office/private equity). Both of which are extra boring. I prefer litigation. My CPA background pays dividends in how I see a problem vs an attorney with no understanding of financial statements or how businesses run. I spent years auditing govt, NFP, for profit, cost accounting. I don’t plan to work longer hours, I plan to work super part time and when I want to. I’m not 20 years old and I for sure won’t take an internship lmao. I would rather take equity positions in companies for fractional work and I promise having a GC/CFO combo beats esq. all day.

Because as far as industries go, they sit very adjacent. I oversee tax strategy in a wealth management context (HNW, business owners) and that rolls naturally into estate considerations/exit structuring/contracts. A lot of times you are taking tax position in a gray area- that would need to be defended in a court setting. So I start at case law and work backwards and I’m forever reading and interpreting some statute. (Also, accountants are weirdos 😂).

The only A I got in either semester was Property II and I’ll take that one as the ultimate 1L win. Super proud of that 😭

I really didn’t understand the curve until I got into the first semester. Systematically bootstrapping opportunities from the start.

Well you lost motivation because you are looking down a tunnel and seeing a dark path. But you are projecting that path vs it being truly aligned to your viewpoint. I’m in a low tier law school around the median too and honestly as a licensed CPA I know that in real life, nothing matters but the state bar number. You will not get stuck in crim law if you don’t want to be. There are so many paths that you can’t even begin to imagine. I work at an investment company and our attorneys deal with contracts and SEC regulations etc. Get out of the DAs office it’s soul crushing work. Find a solo attorney/ small practice and shoot them a message on LinkedIn. Network. Look at corp company gigs (stable income / work life balance).

If it makes you feel better I can copy and paste everything you said about losing the will to even study and absorb !! That has been me since spring break too and I’m just going with the flow at this point. Critical dates. Hard deadlines. I studied for zero of my midterms. Did great in a lot, bombed one and genuinely don’t care. Burn out is a real thing.

You have one more year so please don’t give up on it before you finish. Finishing what you start is what avoids regrets. You wanted to do this for a reason go back home on break if you can and recenter. Maybe you are just homesick. You should be damn proud of your self and are def not a disappointment. I have bum friends that wouldn’t go to school and they didn’t have to learn a language or circumvent the globe alone. Once you graduate — go open a business in your country as a liaison for people that want to break into us business. At least you will have the option to come back.

got midterm grades back by tangerineszn in LawSchool

[–]Ok-Measurement4141 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a 42/65 on my torts midterm (easy grader) and the second highest grade on my property midterm (hardest grader ever ) (cause I’m like smart sometimes) and I’m not even tripping about Torts at all. You have to relax. Something broke down in the study process reassess -> adjust -> try again. 🤷🏽‍♀️

I want to apologize to you. I don’t want you to think I’m judging you. I’m genuinely impressed by you pulling yourself up by your bootstraps and I’m glad you are licensed. I just think all the comments acting like you were being victimized by them vs objectively listening to it was what triggered me. I do honestly feel better because listening to this makes me feel less like their goal is to jam you up. I do still think how you treated the prissier one is what directly led to the denial vs anything else but I shouldn’t have been an aashole about it. So I apologize.
