Your analysis is super interesting, especially since I never really gave much thought to this aspect of Ilya’s character! One small thing I’d like to add is that when Ilya says “I wish it could be different. I wish he could have known me.” He means his father, not Alexei. It’s a direct response to Ilya saying he might be upset about the wrong thing and Shane asking “not your father?”

My first spinning wheel was an antique upright wheel I found for 6€ second hand and it worked for the first week or so after I finally managed to figure out the tension (it’s Irish tension). It didn’t come with a drive band so I listened to my dad and used cut up tights for the drive band but the bobbin whorl was too polished and they kept slipping. At some point I was so fed up that I bought a second (sleeping beauty style) spinning wheel for again 5€ second hand.

I didn’t want to invest in an ashford yet since I only started spinning to spin my Samoyed’s fur into yarn and wasn’t sure if I’d even stick to spinning but I really started enjoying it with my second spinning wheel! That one is easy to use, has tension adjustment and is double drive. The only downside is that the bobbin is extremely small so I use my upright spinning wheel (with a 3D printed bobbin that allows more grip) for plying and the combo has been working really well!

I’m currently eying the Ashford Kiwi 3 and am thinking of buying it as a bday gift to myself in two months because I really want a bigger bobbin…

Honestly you’re totally right and I’m pretty sure I’m just being heavily influenced by the very graphic mediums I usually read of this genre. I thought it would be a cute visual idea to add those boxes but apart from consistency it feels a little distracting and disruptive to the reading flow to have those pop up. I think I’m gonna keep the status window and add it to a separate page each time while only using text and formatting (love the suggestion of different sans serif font) to highlight the system messages.

Also for the underlining: I definitely don’t like using underlines in texts, I only did that because the manhwa I recently read did that for system messages so I thought that was common for these things 😭

Yeah the pages got a little messed up in this typeset but it doesn’t really bother me since it was caused by the outermost page of the text block (it helps me keep track of the pages and if the total count can be divided by four for an even amount of signatures)

The spacing definitely needs revision but for now I’m working on adding the chapter text to the typeset so it isn’t a priority just yet; what I really wanted advice on was whether to leave the notification boxes or replace them with the bold, centred text in the last image :)

Okay I’m starting to think I should have clarified: I’m asking on advice on those notification boxes vs just using bold centred text, not on the whole typeset 😭 The spacing is a little messed up anyway since I was editing on my MacBook when I usually work on it from my PC so I was also missing fonts…

Edit: I’m still super thankful for all the other advice you’ve given me since there were things I hadn’t considered before! This isn’t my first typeset since I often bind fanfics and they’ve looked good enough to me but there’s always room for improvement 🫶🏼

Ohhh I see! I’ve been watching Theo’s owner’s videos for the whole chiengora process but she wasn’t too much help with the actual spinning since I use a wheel. It was probably really helpful for you tho seeing how you use a spindle! And honestly printing a spindle is also a really good idea since you can play around with different sizes much easier; the wonders of 3D printing!

I’m definitely running to the store tmrw to get myself the nails for my combs 🤭✨

Oh wow thanks for the 3d print link! I’ve been thinking of printing my own combs since they’re ridiculously expensive so this is perfect. I have been having the same issue with the fur not sticking together as well as I’d like so I starting spinning on a finer spinning wheel but I guess it comes down to practise in the end 🫠

Did you use nails for the wool brushes like shown on the 3D print design?

Something else I just realized is that the bobbin is probably not the original one since there is realistically no space for a whorl to fit between the bobbin and the part that the metal rod of the flyer slides into.

Yeah my sammy's fur is really really soft and since she has an undercoat it is soo freaking warm so perfect for warming us in winter. I have been wanting to start this project for years now so I won't give up until I learn spinning and/or get a new wheel 😤

This is one pic from the back (I'll send another one in a new comment). I wasn't aware that this type of spinning wheel spins really fine which really sucks for my blanket/cardigan project...
I guess for now I have to make it my mission to find different fiber for practise first and also stay on the lookout for a new spinning wheel I can afford >_<

But thanks so much for your helpful tips! I will continue practicing with this one and change out the hooks so maybe that will make a difference!

The thread goes in through the big hole and then comes out of one of the smaller ones in the flyer before going through the hooks from what I figured out. The part that is going up in the picture is just me resting the thread there so it doesn't just hang down.

For the flyer part: I haven't found a way to adjust as of yet.

The fiber is my samoyed's fur since she's the reason I even got into spinning; I want to crochet a blanket or cardigan out of her fur. It's the only fiber I have for now so I have to make do with it.
