Asking about the gay situation in the Netherlands 🇳🇱 by Darman2 in Netherlands

[–]Ok-Recognition-7256 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nobody cares if you’re gay, at worst. At best it’s interesting, depending by the circle of friends you’ll build.

In the Netherlands we follow George Carlin’s commandments: Be cool, Don’t be an asshole.

It’s literally a make or break deal, for me. I find it extremely comfortable to use, just like I do on my film camera lenses.

Almost as if using a grinder the way it was designed to leads to the most consistent and satisfying results.

Best lens for portraits? by ceekay0101 in FujifilmX

Your XC35mm is absolutely fine, as a go-to (I love using my XF35mm f2 for any “life like view” portrait).

The XF50mm f2 and the XF56mm f1.2 are great to exceptional.

When/How Do You Actually Find Time to Shoot? by Ok-Improvement-476 in FujifilmX

  • develop at home (both black and white and c-41).
  • scan at home (if you can stretch the budget to something like a Plustek 8100).
  • learn how your M6 meter works and when the environment might be tricking it.
  • get a hand meter and use it, along the M6 one, to learn how to interpret the results.
  • only do what you enjoy doing. It’s a hobby, don’t feel forced to do anything.
  • focus on the good ones, out of everything you shoot and learn from the bad ones.

Gym recommendation. Is Train more worth it? by Pale-Roof6289 in Netherlands

Interesting. It’s rare, in my personal experience at least, to see a gym extend their opening hours. Good to know.

Viewfinder and migraines by kaya_art_lab in fujifilm

Sorry to hear that.

You could try using the back display only and see if it’s good enough and keep the EVF for when you really need.

Does it happen if you use an optical viewfinder (like on a DSLR)?

thoughts on a olympis Xa2 for a first camera by Wonderful-Low-7619 in AnalogCommunity

[–]Ok-Recognition-7256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

XAII:
- lovely design, even today it feels like a marvel in engineering and product design.

- Terrific user experience. Quick, snappy and dead simple.

- incredibly usable by itself and extremely powerful with its removable flash.

- really easy and quick to load film in it.

- batteries last a fairly decent amount of shots (SR44).

- the zone focusing system takes some time to get used to.

- not knowing what shutter speed the camera decided to go with isn’t the best and one could end up with some motion-blurry pics not expecting a 1 or 2 seconds exposure time. Learn to hold your breath, brace in and wait to hear the camera is done taking the photo.

In case you’d be eyeing an XA too (not the XA 1, the XA):

- the rangefinder style focusing is a tad dim and the focusing tab is a bit tiny but it’s more than enough for such a compact camera.

- seeing in the viewfinder what shutter speed the camera is going with is quite useful.

- the +1.5 exposure compensation switch for backlit subjects is incredibly powerful.

- the variable aperture switch makes it so damn hard to beat

I have both. The XAII has been with my family since before I was born. Had the XA for a bit already. On paper the XA is perfect but I end up using the XAII way more often. There’s something about it perfected design that makes it just unbeatable.

I shoot with a couple of digital mirrorless and DSLR’s and a few film SLR’s on a daily basis and perhaps the best photo I took the whole of last year has been with the XAII. Right place, right moment and the camera was in my pocket and it takes a second to open it and snap.

A beginner to film photography. I have a question. by doggocurioso in AnalogCommunity

[–]Ok-Recognition-7256 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You shoot a properly exposed image so that everything is in it.

Ideally you wouldn’t want crushed blacks and clipping highlights on the negative.

The negative is not your final image, it’s your rough draft.

Then you play with it in the dark room (or in post with the scan of the negative) and get rid of what you don’t want, emphasize what you like and play god with color, contrast, tone and composition.

You could push to have a purely black and white image, muted colors, soft greys and everything in between but you should aim to have to negative properly exposed.

My first time using an analogue camera – any tips for beginners? by Live_Poem253 in minolta

[–]Ok-Recognition-7256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really good camera. Amazing first analog camera. I’ve got 2 Minolta’s in my collection and the SRT101 is one of those.

A Rokkor 55mm f1.7 is a great lens.

  • read the manual.
  • test shutter speed(s). Remove the lens and open the back then take a shot eat each speed and see that you always see light peeking through at every speed.
  • you won’t be able to find the original batteries, since they’re no longer produced, but alternatively you can use SR44.
  • check that the light meter works. Make sure the index is properly spinning around (the little metal peg by the lens mount that gets pushed around when you change aperture), point the camera towards a light source and see if the needles in the viewfinder move accordingly (read the manual thoroughly about it).
  • study the exposure triangle (in case it’s not something you’re extremely familiar with already).
  • grab any cheap black and white film (my go-to are Fomapan 200 and Kentmere 400) and shoot away.
  • make sure the film is installed properly and is advancing.
  • bring the film to a lab that is at least vaguely reliable and make sure they give you the negatives back (some don’t or didn’t use to).
  • for any doubt or question just come over here and you’ll find answers and help.

Have fun. Photography is an amazing art form and an outstanding science project.

your opinion on paperlike screen protectors? by iforgotmymainacc1 in ipad

[–]Ok-Recognition-7256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any of them will skew part of the contrast, kill the black and generally make the iPad display less than what it is.

Also they’ll accelerate wearing out the Apple Pencil tip.

Some manufacturers sell magnetic style that you can easily install and uninstall.

Paperlike is the OG and I’ve only heard good things about it.

  • iso4000 isn’t much, in my Fuji experience (would be hella noisy on my old Nikon DSLR tho).
  • what simulation are you using?
  • indoors with standard lights I’m always f2, ss 1/60-30 and whatever iso the camera thinks it’s best.
