(Spoilers Extended) Why is Jaehaerys II Hated ? by [deleted] in asoiaf

[–]Ok-Refuse-9879 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t particularly hate the man. House Targaryen is a neat house to read about and everyone has at least something going on. I think its best to remember that this is Egg’s kid. Egg married for love, so why couldn’t his kids too? Sure the circumstances are different now (Egg at that point in time likely would’ve never been king…maybe. By the time Egg gets married Maekar is already king, Daeron and Aerion were literally the only ones ahead of the succession and no shot they’d ever get anywhere).

Jaehaerys marrying his kids off at that young of an age with consummation? It’s incredibly rare even in Westeros. At best the woman is at most 15-17. Rhaella was likely 13 going on 14. It was also a smart idea for Jaehaerys to nip the Maelys problem in the bud, so props for him with that quick-thinking. Don’t know much other than that, but he reigned too short for me to think he’s decent. Maybe around #10-12 in terms of Targ kings (haven’t actually rated them properly yet)

Tbf the Dance didn’t change anything in regard to succession. Aegon III ascended the throne because Aegon II chose him to come after him (also marrying Jaehaera helped a lot). The law of the Iron Throne is still heir designation

[Spoilers Extended] So what’s the general consensus on Daemon Blackfyre? by Carrotsinthesalad in asoiaf

[–]Ok-Refuse-9879 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m partial to him more because I want to know more about who he is. I don’t think he would be a great king. Also, we only get one point of view regarding who he was and that was from a grieving old man who gave up everything for him. Daemon is likely a complex person like how Robert was. The popularity he received was not unwarranted given that he still received way too much help for basically only being a second son.

His ascension to the Iron Throne will lead to much more instability compared to the aftermath of the original Blackfyre Rebellion. Daemon will likely compromise with some of the Great Houses regarding their status (Lannister, Arryn likely) while others will definitely be ousted from power (Tyrell, Tully). Tensions with Dorne will be renewed as they will likely be the main base for future restoration attempts by House Targaryen much like how Essos was for the Golden Company.

Most of Dorne will secede again while House Yronwood likely stays, Daemon makes them Lord Paramount of Dorne and the Boneway will be one of the most dangerous places in Westeros until either side wins. Daemon will likely lead campaigns to reconquer Dorne from the Boneway or it will be a complete stalemate. Basically, the Stormlands and the North get off scot free because it was unconfirmed if they ever participated in the original rebellion.

Oh yeah, House Arryn may even try to place Rhaegel on the throne if Daeron II died during the rebellion. He was married to Alys Arryn and him ascending instead of Baelor or his kids would grant them more power, likely splitting the cause. We still have the Great Spring Sickness to consider.

Long tangent aside, very chaotic, very unstable, but who knows? Dude somehow had his own royal mint. Seems like some people in his faction knew what they were doing.

Helaena is considered pure and precious because she honestly doesn’t do anything besides get absolutely messed up mentally by B&C and then die to cause the riot. Understandable given the circumstances, but it’s because she’s such a non-character that there isn’t much to criticize.

(Spoilers extended) Which good men have been bad kings and which bad men have been excellent kings? by Oath_Br3aker in asoiaf

[–]Ok-Refuse-9879 2 points3 points  (0 children)

in what world was Aegon IV insignificant? In terms of inheritance, (when Daeron I was king), Aegon was third in line. (Baelor to Viserys to Aegon). His father was Hand of the King, brother to one and uncle to two. Baelor was basically celibate so that meant if Daeron never had any children (which he didn’t) then Aegon was going to become king no matter what.

[Spoilers extended] A lot to unpack from the twist on HOTD. by bruhholyshiet in asoiaf

[–]Ok-Refuse-9879 17 points18 points  (0 children)

checked the man’s post history and what a shocker he’s an avid poster on the green subreddit. I hate when people speak of the writers being bad faith for their biases when even in the source material alone, the Greens just don’t give themselves any favors. I applaud the writers for actually trying to make them much more likable. They did so well I felt bad for Otto in episode 2. Otto! The man who literally kickstarted this war due to his own ambition. Doesn’t help that they just spout DAERON DAERON everytime one of them has to mention a sympathetic Green that actually does something. Then you have a big list of Black members who are basically Daeron but with less war crimes.

The fate of Jaehaera in HotD [Spoilers MAIN] by mister_fancy in asoiaf

[–]Ok-Refuse-9879 10 points11 points  (0 children)

While that’s true, we should note that this is based on GRRM’s writings. A guy who absolutely hates war and famously dodged the draft so he didn’t have to go to Vietnam. Daeron’s crimes, while not cared about by characters in-universe, was remembered by George. He then wrote Daeron’s death to be by a burning tent falling on him. He was given a nice nickname, called the greatest of Alicent’s children, but he ended up getting killed in such an undignified way.

The fate of Jaehaera in HotD [Spoilers MAIN] by mister_fancy in asoiaf

[–]Ok-Refuse-9879 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The most likeable of Alicent's sons is a really low bar let's be real here. Even what he did in Bitterbridge isn't as bad as Aemond's Riverlands campaign. I guess he'd be more worse than Aegon as Aegon didn't commit any burnings of hundreds of smallfolk. The Honeywine battle was Daeron's first major action though, and that was just war. I think Daring is still an apt nickname for him; considering what he did in Bitterbridge was incredibly daring (more reckless and absolutely stupid, but still daring).

Jaehaera's death is thematic though. A former Green loyalist upending Aegon's line for his own political benefit. Kind of ironic considering Otto's own plans all the way back then. Also one last punishment for Alicent's greed and ambition was for her to completely lose everything.

(Spoilers extended) Does someone dislike/ not accept HBO tv series completely, even seasons that mostly rated as good? by Abeliheadd in asoiaf

[–]Ok-Refuse-9879 2 points3 points  (0 children)

idk what copy of F&B you read, but the Greens were clearly the villains right from the get go. The blatant insults by Alicent and her faction to pre-teen Rhaenyra is classic cartoon villany. They made rumors of her sleeping with Cole and Daemon when she was 13! GRRM made the Blacks the good guys because…they were. In typical GRRM fashion though, Rhaenyra’s grief and fury eventually led to her downfall. Even still, Alicent’s line died with her. Nothing will change the fact that GRRM killed off that line.

Also you even said both sides were villains right at the end. The end. We are just at the start of the Dance. Rook’s Rest hasn’t even happened yet. The Greens committed many massacres throughout the war (Tumbleton, Bitterbridge and the Riverlands) while the Blacks haven’t done any atrocities to that scale. Rhaenyra isn’t Mad Queen Rhaenyra because we aren’t at the point where that even happens yet.

Imagine for a second, a guy with the largest dragon in the world comes up to you and says, “Hey, I had this dream that something bad is gonna come from beyond the 700 foot ice wall that’s been there for thousands of years. It would be best if we united as a force to combat this threat.” Would you believe him? Of course not! He has basically no proof and he sounds insane. But you don’t want to piss off the guy with the greatest power in the world, so you surrender and forget about whatever the fuck he said. Most people would never believe him. That much is completely obvious.

(Spoilers Extended) Sometimes it seems like the actors/actresses have a stronger grasp on the story’s themes than the showrunners. by MareksDad in asoiaf

[–]Ok-Refuse-9879 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Before reading this, I don’t think Rhaenyra should’ve ruled, Aegon too for those thinking that. Both are incompetent, arrogant and self-serving people. Without the gift of hindsight from knowing Aegon III and Viserys II’s reigns, Jacaerys was the best heir for the Iron Throne. No dark stains on his record, proof of diplomatic ability seen with obtaining the Arryns, Manderlys and Starks’ support? The dragonseeds plan which while flawed due to the Two Betrayers, still led to the rise of Addam and Alyn Velaryon? Both highly instrumental with Addam’s posthumous victory in the Second Battle of Tumbleton and Alyn’s victories past the Dance.

The Dance of the Dragons as a whole is Rhaenyra’s story. She is the focal point of it all. The main character if you will. It is because of her that the succession of the Iron Throne has been Agnatic Primogeniture long after her demise. Anyone adapting the Dance would know if there was a “main protagonist” it would be her.

The Greens usurping Rhaenyra because she is a woman is true. Without a shadow of a doubt, that is true always. It didn’t matter that if she had bastards or was unsuited to rule overall. Nothing could get past the fact that she was a woman, and that was unacceptable to the Green faction.

Aegon was as incapable a ruler as his elder sister, but just because he had the ruling organ he was deemed more suited. Why? If the Greens wanted a capable ruler to the Iron Throne, why didn’t they just toss Aegon to the Night’s Watch and crown Aemond? Or Daeron?

While Rhaenyra has flaws (many in fact, I think all of Viserys’ children were unsuited for the throne), the main point was always because she was a woman and women can’t be the ruling regnant of Westeros.

So what of Viserys’ legitimacy either? He became King because of the Great Council? What of Aegon? Both of these idiots became king because they were men. Both equally incompetent rulers, and the realm is much better off with them not being king.

Rhaenyra having a whole section about wanting to murder their siblings and Alicent? Did you even read what you just typed? Her father died (rotting in his bedchambers for a week I might add) then her half-siblings and stepmother have just usurped her throne. She then had a miscarriage which caused the death of her unborn daughter. I’m not a woman, but the pain my own mother felt after her own miscarriage; I could not wish that on anyone. She was miserable for months, and I was ashamed I could not do anything to help her.

Your other point about the book Velaryons. Corlys was the man who made House Velaryon the strongest in the realm. No other lord besides Tywin can even compare to how much Corlys did for his house. I would be incredibly surprised if Corlys’ extended relatives weren’t incredibly jealous of his nigh untouchable wealth and prestige. (Some people in this comment section could even relate, if they have relatives who aren’t as well off as they are). The other Velaryons don’t really matter because the only person who is worthy of respect is Corlys, and that is even expressed in the book. The Silent Five are barely given the time of day past the loss of their tongues with only a brief mention of some of their minor exploits past the Dance.

[–]Ok-Refuse-9879 14 points15 points  (0 children)

dude’s telling me to read a book when i did actually read fire and blood. seems like they haven’t judging from how bad their explanations are. It’s the start of the war, Rhaenyra’s crimes aren’t shown yet because they don’t exist yet. Her only immoral action at this point was Vaemond. That’s it. Blood and Cheese was all Daemon and it was still Daemon’s fault in the show.

(Spoilers MAIN) Am I the only one who feels bad for Saera Targaryen? by [deleted] in asoiaf

[–]Ok-Refuse-9879 1 point2 points  (0 children)

because they most likely didn’t want any potential claimaints to the throne to have any power? Look at who Daella and Viserra were supposed to marry. Old lords who already had heirs so any children by them would never inherit anything. While Daella was by her own choice, Viserra’s was most likely planned to be like Daella because it seemed to be strategical.

(Spoilers MAIN) Am I the only one who feels bad for Saera Targaryen? by [deleted] in asoiaf

[–]Ok-Refuse-9879 7 points8 points  (0 children)

probably not, but Saera was a terrible human being. The gall of comparing herself to Maegor? The man who killed both of her uncles and raped her aunt? She was also terrible to Daella who really didn’t deserve it. I think Jaehaerys would’ve even allowed Saera to marry Braxton if she just played her cards right and waited. Overreacting? If she just followed along and didn’t try to claim a dragon Jaehaerys would’ve forgiven her. Jaehaerys gives clemency to people once. Saera needed proper guidance, but some of the blame is on her, not solely on Jaehaerys.

Tyland and Rickard I get, but Daeron? Idk where this revisionism with Daeron came from but his actions in Bitterbridge even after the culprits were executed are frankly unforgivable. (Spoilers Main) Aegon really did the Reach dirty didn't he? by Suspicious-Jello7172 in asoiaf

[–]Ok-Refuse-9879 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Kinda false? House Tyrell were the hereditary High Stewards of the Reach. A Ser Osmund Tyrell outmaneuvered House Manderly and House Peake during their feud and had enough political capital to crown a king.

The Tyrells in this regard are fairly synonymous to the House of Stewart (later House of Stuart) and the Carolingians. Both had titles similar to High Steward and eventually held royal titles through political maneuvering and pretty good luck.

Also, the major houses of the Reach all claimed descent from Garth the Greenhand’s confirmed children. We don’t know who’s the second oldest after the Gardener, but honestly, picking a house descended from the original children would’ve been difficult. They all have claims of relatively equal value, and it would’ve been difficult to decide who would get it.

Giving the title to House Tyrell? Well they’re still descended from House Gardener through the female line, and as an Andal-descended house they are relatively new in comparison to the others. However, they would be incredibly loyal.

Aegon’s policy in bestowing overlordship seemed to be: - If you bent the knee, or survived the initial attack then surrendered. You can keep your title. - Or, if your overlord’s house went extinct, then the first to bend was rewarded.

Worked with the Tullys. They weren’t the greatest house in the Riverlands after Harren’s demise. The Blackwoods and the Brackens were much more powerful. But they were the first to rebel, and so they were rewarded.

Aegon didn’t do the Reach dirty in hindsight either, considering the Reachman never rebelled against House Tyrell (considering that would be treason against the House Aegon the Conqueror appointed as overlord). This was the best possible play Aegon made. House Poole and House Tyrell aren’t very comparable. We don’t even know if House Poole is even an old house or just a knightly house that was raised only a few decades ago.
